Are You A Rationalist, Empiricist Or Sceptic?

Wed Aug 30, 2006 1:16 am

Which are you then???

Just to let you know;

  • Rationalists believe that true knowledge is found not through listening to our senses, as they can sometimes deceive us, but knowledge comes thru the realm of the mind. This is like, say you are coming home from a night out and you see a shadow and you think that someone is chasing you. You panic for a while and then realise it is just a tree branch waving in the wind, that would be an example of our senses deceiving us.

  • Empiricists are the complete opposite. They believe that all of our true knowledge come from the senses. Like if we taste something or touch something that is very hot, we know that it is hot and won't touch or taste it again because our senses told us not to.

  • Sceptics believe that we cannot ever know something with certainty, like if we drop a ball from a window, we cannot prove in advance that it will, for sure, hit the ground. If it does, then at that moment we know. You never know what will happen, like if it just floated up in the air, or someone decided to catch it before it hit the ground.

I am a Sceptic. I beleive in the theory of you can never know something with pure certainty. I am interested in what other a.netters think as I am doing Philosophy in Religious Education, not that the post has anything to do with religion or religious beleifs.  cheerful

I am an oversimplifyer. I believe that all of humanity falls into one of those three categories with zero overlap.

I also believe that there are 10 kinds of people in the world.
Those who understand binary and those who do not.

Scepticism in that sense is nice, but impractical for navigating through daily life. In order to function in a physical world and interact with others, we have to base our decisions on thousands of what sceptics would term "assumptions." So, on the unconscious level, we're all empiricists, and we move through rationalism and scepticism only when we have enough time to apply abstract thought.

I'm a combination of the three but I'd put more in Rationalist than the other two.

A sceptic when it comes to in believing something

An empiricist when I can witness something

A rationalist when I can determine something
Something perfect can only get worse
