AMS For The Weekend...where To Stay?

Wed Aug 30, 2006 3:49 am

I'm hopefully going to AMS for the weekend and I had a couple questions:
1) Do we need a car if we are just going to explore AMS?
2) Where is the best and most economical place to stay, keeping in mind that cheap is good, but location is important too?
3) Anything special going on in AMS this weekend (9/1-4) that we shouldn't miss? None of us are interested in drugs so don't even bother  Silly.

You want to visit the city of Amsterdam, or just the airport for spotting?

No car needed as you get around very well by tram, metro or bus. Walking is also not bad if the weather allows it.

There are a lot of cheap hotels, bed and breakfast sort, just about all over the place. Some better then the others I guess.

If you are to explore the airport a bike is what you should have as minimum transportation option. Polderbaan is not really close to the airport but allows for good spotting. Can be done by bike, but if the weather goes bad you are kind of lost with a bike out there.

Dont know about hotels as I am not from Amsterdam.

Renting a car will not be necessary. The city is rather compact so everything is withing walking distance. And the city has a very dense network of busses, trams and underground.

You definatly need an umbrella. I was there today for the morning and afternoon and got absoloutly p*ssed on!!
You wont need a car to get around the city, just a pair of healthy legs as with every street you turn, you find another lovely area to explore  Smile
Have a lovely time there as I do everytime I go.. Im even planning to move there..
Remember.. Iamsterdam!  Smile
Never give up..

No, it will just get in the way.

If you feel like winging it, take the train to the Centraal Station and visit the VVV (tourist board). They'll make a hotel booking for you based on where in town you want to stay, and whether you want a private bath or not. The first time I did this I got a great room overlooking the Vondelpark that was near everything.

Second reason to not take a car is the parking fees!

I always go without the car to Amsterdam as parking is really expensive!

This summer I went to AMS for the third time and I must say that the best way how to explore AMS is on the bike. You see a lot more then when you're on foot, move quickly and dont need the public transport at all. One week rental fee plus insurance was about 70 E per bike.
there is no coincidence
