College Fans

Mon Sep 04, 2006 12:41 am

I don't remember this happening when I lived in Seattle or Pendleton. I currently live in Portland and it seems like every Saturday during football season everyone's cars are bathed in either orange and black (for Oregon State) or green and yellow (for University of Oregon). The annoying thing is some of these people are such hard-core fans who have never attended either school or know anyone who attened the school they are so rabid about.

I have thought about just making up a college and going all out to support them. Something like Southeastern Delaware State. Go Parrots!!! Bathe my car in eggshell, mauve, jet, sienna, and auburn.

Anywhere else in the world have this experience of seeing convoys of cars every Saturday supporting some college team?

Before you get on me about the Canucks thing, I just got a new car, so I have not had the chance to get any Canucks gear for it. If I had my way, I would get one bumper sticker and save one window flag for when they get to the play-offs.

Do you know these people didn't attend either of these schools or are you stereotyping? What if these people work for the school (as I understand, UO has a campus in Portland) or their kid goes there?

I never understood why people get their knickers in a wad about people who never went to a university supporting that school's athletics. These blue-collar average joes are using their hard-earned money to buy apparel and merchandise and the revenue from those sales are generally turned over to the athletic department. A boatload of people I know here in Texas support UT and have never gone to school there, or any school in the UT system for that matter, but they'd give their life savings to go to the OSU - UT game next week. That's more dedication to a team than a lot of bored housewives of alumni you see on TV every week.
Oh no, she's getting impatient! Take a stab at it!

People come out and support pro teams that they have no connection to, other than being fans. I really don't see a difference.

I have talked to some of the hard-core fans of OSU and U of O that have no connection to the schools. On one level, I can understand being a absloute die-hard never-say-die fan of a school or a team. But, the way the people of the Northern Willamette Valley just go all-out for either school is crazy! Friday nights and Saturday mornings before a home game, there will be long lines of vehicles going from Portland to Corvallis or Eugene for the game and the media gets whipped up into a frenzy. Every day there are pre-game reports on both the Ducks and Beavers.

Neither OSU or OU have campuses in Portland. There are team stores for both schools downtown and both have offices and some graduate classes in the area. It just gets annoying after a while.

Exactly where is Nauru located in Texas. (Just kidding). Then again how many students at George Mason were fans of the basketball team before the NCAA tournment last year.

but you just named the largest city in Oregon, where Oregon State and University of Oregon happen to be located. Live with it, they are supporting their home state.
