So When Did Cleanliness Go Out Of Fashion?

Mon Sep 04, 2006 3:56 am

It's a good thing I'm alone at the moment, so my frustration won't get on anyone's nerves.

The thing is, I get to my flat at uni after about one and a half months away from Heidelberg and what do I have to do? Wash dishes and cooking gear, scrub the bathtub and empty the trash. Great. I have three flatmates, one guy and two girls. The guy's at home for semester break, one girl is in New Zealand and has sublet her room to a friend and the third girl was here one day before I arrived; the latter I noticed while reading the WLAN connection protocol of the internet router.*

I am by no means a neat-freak; I couldn't care less about the occasional corner full of dust, muddy footprints on the kitchen floor or a spiderweb in the window. But I do clean, and obviously unlike one of my flatmates I wouldn't wonder about moths in the rice if I was freakin' incapable of emptying the trash before going home for the weekend.

There also must be two different kinds of "clean" cooking pots, one kind that I wouldn't hesitate to put my food in and another kind that basically has seen something remotely similar to washing water for an estimated time of less than 10 seconds.

Then we have the bathtub; I actually think I could live without cleaning it of the remains of someone else's leg hair. No shit. Oh, and the grime from someone else's bathing (as opposed to showering) covering the upper regions of the tub was a treat as well; good thing I didn't really notice it yesterday evening because I was too tired to care much about anything.

Oh well... can someone please just tell me the date cleaning up after yourself went out of fashion? I'd like to refer to the day as little-d-day, for dirt-day. It's terrible feeling to miss out on a trend!

* which I read because I was trying to find out how many times my WLAN adaptor had gone south over the course of an hour or so

Aloges, if ever I need a flatmate in Germany, you're my man! I hate that kind of shit. Just put things back where they belong, and be considerate of common areas. I can relate now, because my dad is staying with me for the week, and apparently shares the sentiments of your flatmates.

NZ flatmate is twenty- err... -eight, good-looking and has a boyfriend of some six years, NZ flatmate's friend I haven't seen yet and the other flatmate is "hot" in that fake-bake, extra make-up, double-bling kind of way if you're partial to that and has apparently been going through various boyfriends in the past months.

Gee, that's young.  wink

Ha ha, welcome to studentdom. If I had a dollar for every argument I've had with housemates about cleaning our accomodation at Uni I'd be considerably richer than I am now. One thing that we used to do was put the dirty plates on the bed of the person who didn't wash them, that usually got a response!

No arguments here yet, thank God. "NZ roommate" - should've thought of a better nickname - is rather neat as well, so that keeps the workload spread somewhat better.

Having visited the house my daughter lived in when she was in college, shared with three other girls, and the house my son lived in when he was in college, shared with two other guys, there is no question which house was the messiest.

The girls, hands down.

Around 1992, I suppose. That was when I was still studying, lived in a students' hostel and shared a floor with two girls and one guy. The guy was ok, one of the girls was great, but the other one was somewhat allergic to dish-washing. I have no idea how often we had to ask her to wash her dishes.

One day I printed out some signs. The first read: "Today's Dirty Dishes" (followed by an arrow pointing to one tablespoon), followed by "Last Week's Dirty Dishes", "New Year's Eve 1978", "Allied Forces Land in Normandy", "Bronze Age", "Jurassic Period" and "Precambrium". Each sign came with an arrow pointing to a different pile of dirty dishes. I think I called the line "Archeology of the Kitchen Sink".

Well, I certainly wouldn't put up with that crap. . . .

Either clean up or move out.

Simple as that. While you may not be uptight over the occasional dustball or spider web - that would drive me insane - and I'd break out the 409 or the Steam Cleaner.

My Father has a tendency to spill in the kitchen - all manner of whatever - on the floor. I have become accustomed to to returning from work, and immediately cleaning the kitchen floor. I'm going to steam clean the carpets next time I'm home . . .

I like it clean . . . your flatmates would drive me crazy.

I'm with Pep, I just spent the last two hours cleaning, including vacuuming the edges of all the rooms w/ a Shark to get the stuff the regular vacuum can't reach. Our rental place is really small, so even a just a day's worth of not picking things up makes the place look like a cyclone hit it.

Keeping a place clean is the one area my normally even keel nature goes out the window and I get very passive aggressive, especially back in the days of roommates. After asking nicely a couple times that spills be wiped up, underwear be picked up, etc., I would take to putting the dirty rags I use to clean the offender's messes, and the dirty clothes of theirs I picked up (especially the wet skanky towel off the bathroom floor) on the respective person's pillow. Didn't make me very popular for a few days, but it sure did fix the behaviour! Big grin

I'm telling you man, I could NOT deal with that kind of shit. I have 5 roomates, 1 guy and 4 other girls, and it has got to be the cleanest house on our street. We vaccumn the floors at least 3 times a week, wash the kitchen floor twice a week at least, the bathrooms are in a perpetual state of cleanliness because we all clean after pretty much every use, not total clean, but wipe down the sink or tub if we use it. My advice would be to move out, or kick them out if you have that option avaliable to you, because, dirt and food all over the place lead to mice before you know it.

And if you get the mice, you need ANC to come over with a big 'ol gun, or I'll come with a 9 iron and start taking them out.

The mice or the roommates? Big grin

I guess it all amounts to the kind of education people bring from home. My uncle's wife is one of the messiest women I've ever met. You come into their apartment and find dirty dishes in the bedroom, piles of clothing everywhere, food leftovers in the kitchen... a total chaos. Obviously, my cousins are taking the same path.

On the other hand, Mom has always stressed the importance of cleanliness, and has us help her with the house chores. I'm used to keeping my house clean, and I'm sure my brother could also hold his own. Heck, even my 5-year-old sister gets to wash the dishes every now and then!
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

Well, my roommates are good mates - it's just that I needed to do some after-work whining. No one here gets on my nerves, is rude, or disturbs me when I'm working. I could have it a lot worse; in fact the three of them are what kept me in this hardly prestigious part of town for so long.

I'll be moving out anyway in a few months, but that's because my specific programme of study involves a switch to another city.

Oh my friend, have you ever lived in an apartment with spoiling food in it? My first year of University, 3 years back now, I was on the 10th floor of the residence, and trust me, somehow, they make it up there. It wasn't my room that was messy, but they will just infest the whole area, we had to be given mouse traps every couple of days to keep them in check.

Apparently not - however, the fact that my building is solid concrete from top to bottom might be helping; the kind of concrete that you won't be drilling voluntarily after your first two attempts.

The concrete should help a lot! My building was not entirely concrete, and we had tons of mice, but make sure you keep on that situation, there was nothing more disgusting than waking up because a mouse had just ran across your face!

If you are thinking that flight attendants are any better, just dream on.
After I started with my current job last year, I first shared a flat with two flight attendants (one male, one female, both from Poland). While the male one was ok, the female one never washed dishes and only gave her sector (sitting room) a superficial hoovering when she expected visitors (we divided the flat up for cleaning purposes, I had the bathrooms and the kitchen floor, the guy the kitchen and the girl the sitting room to be cleaned about once a week, I think I was the only one who stuck to the rules).
When the girl moved out, she left all her junk in her room, plus lots of rotten food in the fridge and her kitchen cabinet.

I moved out in May and rented a nice big old farm house, where I'm living now.

The only way to make sure your flat is clean is to live on your own. Stuff this living with mates or what have you. They NEVER clean, they NEVER make any mess and they NEVER are there when you find the shit!

If, heaven forfend, anything happened to my wife I would never rent the spare rooms out or have lodgers. They are the like the Night of the Living Dead! Horrendous, no matter who they are!!

Knock over a bank, buy your own place and employ a decent (good looking) maid, thats my advice - but DON'T whatever you do, marry her Big grin

In my experience, by default women are generally cleaner and tidier than men. But when they tend to be messy, they're worst than Pigpen (the character from Peanuts who always had a dust cloud following him.)

Just be calm and deal with it - it's obviously irritating you. Some people need boundaries, and will simply slacken if they feel they can get away with it.

well, just wondered about the negative sound of the first post, but the second one justified the first one. Bush-lovers reveal bad taste, to put it mildly. I used to share a house with 4 other people. We all had our own pans, plates, cutlery etc. but people still would not wash their own.

Eventually I got fed up of washing everyone elses stuff, so on a weekend whatever was left in the sink dirty got put outside until the person claimed them and washed them.

People eventually realized and kept the stuff in their room or washed it the same night!

People are just lazy. My junior year while I was in college, my roommates would use pots/pants/dishes etc. They would never clean them. I rarely cooked at my house, as I would eat at the student union. Eventually the dishes etc stayed in the sink for close to a month-mold and fungus began to grow on them, and the whole downstairs stunk. Well I was the only person in the house who cleaned them. Even though I honestly never used them. So after a while I began to throw away my roommates dishes if they left them in the sink for a long while. Serves them right.
