College Football Week 1: How Did Your Team Do?

Mon Sep 04, 2006 5:30 am

Well, week one is nearly over. There are a few games to be played tonight, and I think one tomarrow. But, the majority of the games are over. My take on week one:

USC looks good again. They will eventually wear down just about everyone they play. Will they contend for a national title? That I don't know about. They should be strong, though. And, they should end up in a BCS bowl.

Texas looks pretty good again. They should do well, but they need to play a few good teams yet before we can judge how good they really are. Just like USC, for that matter. Everyone plays a cup cake in week one for the most part.

I didn't get to see Ohio State, but from what I've heard, many are picking them to beat Texas next week.

Cal layed an egg out at Tennessee. Man that was ugly. A new QB controversy is brewing in Berkeley.

Oregon looked strong against Stanford, but like Texas and USC, they played a weak team. They'll lose a few games this year I think.

As for my team? Oregon State thumped a cup cake in Division 1AA Eastern Washington. They rolled 56-17, and it was never close. At the end of the first quarter, it was 21-0. They looked pretty strong all around, but the real test is next week at Boise State.

The Pac 10 looks to have four or five teams that are strong this year, and will show well in bowl games again this year.

Let's wait until they play a real team to start talking about how good USC is.

All this talk about how they are better than USC this year, and then they not only lose, they get annihilated. Pathetic.

My team the University of Southern Miss got their ass whipped by Florida 34-7, but it was to be expected. We played them close until 4th quarter, and we turned the ball over too many times.

On a side note, Texas' QB is named Colt McCoy...what a fitting name for a Texas QB. I thought that was hillarious.

Illini broke a nine game losing streak! Woohoo! Given... it was against Division II Eastern Illinois, but hey! A win is still a win, I'll take it.

Sloppy win over ISU for the Boilermakers. This could be a tough season...such a strong start to the game...and yet many crucial mistakes that made it closer than it should have been....two dropped punts!?

Curtis Painter on the other hand seemed to do well. He's young, but I think he'd got great talent...he just needs experience to hone his skills.

Hawks wallopped I-AA Montana, but unfortunately it was not as lopsided as it should have been, it seems. As late as the middle of the 3rd quarter the score was 17-7 Iowa, which was way too close for comfort when playing a I-AA team. But right after Montana got their only TD, Drew Tate and company went on a nice drive and scored to make it 24-7, and then the next time they got the ball made it 31-7, and the final score was 41-7, so they were able to pull away pretty at the end.

Syracuse should be a non-issue next week, and then two weeks from today is the biggest weekend in the state of iowa (outside of the beginning of the state fair of course - ha), Iowa v. Iowa State. It's in Iowa City this year, so we shouldn't have too much of a problem.

It's gonna be a crazy weekend.

Florida and Georgia both won. Yes, I cheered for UGA. We have a family friend on the team as a freshman. I'll cheer for them every game except the one with Florida.

I know no one cares and the game had zero interest nationwide, but my alma mater, Northern Michigan finally won one, coming back from a 20-7 defict in the last five minutes to beat that other power house University of Indianapolis 27-20 in OT. A quick history lesson NMU went 0-11 in 1974 and the next year was national champions at 13-1 (so there is hope for some teams), and until 1988 was a national powerhouse in DII football, beating some MAC teams along the way.

My alma mater - Coast Guard - doesn't get to lose its first game of the season until next week, when it opens against Kings Point.

The team I root for, being born and raised southern California, is USC. They did just fine, feasting on some fine Arkansas hog.

My Fresno State Bulldogs had a pretty good opener.

Fresno State: 28
Nevada: 19

The soph QB for Fresno State did a pretty good job for his first game. Williams and Fernandez at WR make him look good though. We will see. Next week is against Oregon.

My beloved BG Falcons fell to Wisconsin at Browns' Stadium 35-14. Just like last year, they made some key mistakes at bad times, and just weren't a match for Wisconsin's offensive line and punishing running game. They used a redshirt freshman who played his first ever college game, named Freddie Barnes, and he did a pretty damn good job.

They get the honor of playing Ohio Sate the week after they play Texas, I believe. Oh, joy..

And speaking of OSU, they warmed up with for the 'Horns with an easy win over another MAC school, Northern Illinois.

Might be lousy at football, but didn't USNews or some other rating service report that the Coast Guard Academy was the hardest school to get accepted into. Brains not Brawn.

Football remains a painful event. At our homecoming several years ago, we got slaughtered by Salve Regina - which had been an all-girls college when I was a CGA Cadet.

Well, my team is Cal, and as mentioned earlier, they had a miserable performance.

I am confident they will rebound, though, look for better QB play, better running, and stronger tackling in their next effort.

The UND Fighting Sioux beat Central Washington 28-14. Unlike Division I football, the conference play begins immediately for a lot of teams instead of beating up on teams like Northwestern Arizona Technical College and Bob's Bartending College for the first couple of games.

I fail to see the point of not having pre-season games. Isn't the point of non-league games in college football, to play at least one team that isn't as good as you to pick up not only a win, but work out kinks?

I love non-league football. It's a chance to see teams you don't normally get to see. If you have the time and money, it's a chance to travel. This year Oregon State is going out to Honolulu to play Hawaii. It is the perfect time of year for Oregonians to get out of the cold and wet, and head to tropical paradise. Should they get a bowl game, that's an added bonus. But either way, OSU is goin somewhere tropical this year!!

For instance, most DII teams have to start the conference season right away in order to complete the schedule prior to the playoffs to determine a REAL national champion. Take the Great Lakes Conference, it has 13 schools playing football, they play a 10 game conference schedule, some schools only play a 10 game schedule which doesn't allow for a non-conference game. The schools that play a 11 game schedule fit a non-conference game in somewhere in the season.

You can schedule quality teams for your non league games - like USC and Cal did, or you can schedule teams that guarantee you an easy victory. The latter might make you feel good, but won't help your rankings at the end of the year.

I spent the whole day out over 12 hours, getting ready for the FSU UM game. spent half the day outside in the rain, for what deal with a bunch of drunk 40 year old men and college students (which I dont mind the college girls) and get home at 02:30 For nothing. To see UM not able to run a normal offense, they really have something coming to them this year, they were horrible last night. No offense at all!  Sad Oh well maybe next year we can beat FSU? Thats two years in a row. Anyway It does not look like UM going to be in the top ten this year.
