British Tourists Attacked In Jordan

Mon Sep 04, 2006 9:06 pm

An Iraqi has attacked a group of tourists in downtown Amman, killing a British citizen and injuring 5 others (2 British, 1 Dutch, 1 Australian & 1 New Zealander).

A British tourist has been killed and five others wounded when a man opened fire on them in Amman, a Jordanian government spokesman said.

The other tourists injured in the attack were two British women, an Australian woman, a New Zealand woman and a Dutchman.

A security source said a man, identified as an Iraqi national, was arrested by police who cordoned off the site of the attack near the Roman amphitheatre in the central area of the capital.

This is the second time Iraqis attack foreigners in Jordan... if these attacks happen again the (now huge) Iraqi population in Jordan will probably see a huge backlash. Now Iraqi violence is spreading to other countries...

Horrible. I take it there is no motive, unless the war is one...? I hope it doesn't happen again. I didn't hear about the first one, can you tell me about it?

Turns out the man was Jordanian, and it appears he acted on his own... very sad news.

Ajd, the last one was a triple suicide bombing (the first terrorist attack occur on Jordanian soil since the 1970s) which hit three hotels, the Hyatt Plaza, the Radisson SAS and the Days Inn. Almost all the victims were Jordanian or Palestinian, and one of the suicide bombings targeted a (Palestinian) wedding. Al Qaeda tried to justify it by saying "Westerners frequented these hotels", which is BS.

Very sad indeed. The country cant handle these acts. Another one or two of these could prove disastrous. I hope things stay quiet though.. i doubt they will.  Sad

Actually, Jordan is very, very stable, the most stable country in the levant region. It has one of the world's top intelligence services (one which uncovered the Y2K plot), and I am sure it can handle this problem well... apparantley, the guy was acting alone out of frustration, but who knows?

Im jordanian, lived there all my life except the last 3.. so trust me.. i know its stable. But the people arnt. Im sure hes acting out in frustraion, but thats the problem. More and more people acting out in frustration could be a problem. The majority of the people are living in poverty, and everything is getting too expensive.. thats one.. two, the people are getting fed up with the governments policies towards the west and what not. I just hope that my opinions are wrong.. because its a shame if things blow up.

most sad indeed. But the fact that the man is / was Jordanian is rather better than him having been a NON-Jordanian and will make things easier

let's not exaggerate. There was that attack against the hotels, by terrorists, and now this act of murder by an individual. Jordan after the terror-attack worked on that aspect and they will now improve structures around touristic places of visit accordingly. So that I am fairly optimistic. Nothing is impossible, true, but there is no reason for pessimism.

True... I just hope we don't see any more such attacks. But, the Jordanian attitude towards Westerners isn't "kill 'em all", so I doubt we'll see such things occur again.

She was set to blow herself up as well but her belt didn't go off IIRC.

Because I commented in context of what was reported? Iraqi violence did hit Jordan on 9/11 (9th of November) 2005, when the suicide bombings occured as the attack was carried out by an Iraqi and his wife. And, Iraqis would probably face a backlash if this had been carried out by an Iraqi (even though that is very wrong), as tourism will probably be greatly effected in Jordan.

I am NOT a clairvoyant but I am fairly optimistic that the impact on tourism will be minimal. A glance into Swiss newspapers revealed that the incident was hardly, if at all noticed.

I visited that amphitheatre in Amman (old Philadelphia of Roman times) and considered how I would have acted in the position of that British tourist who died. Wrongly ! I would have stared at that weird person and wondered. Anyway, how do you hide in such a place ? No, just to imagine the last thoughts of that poor man there is horrible and depressing. The only "positive" thing is that "hardened" media-men nowadays take care if there are more than 100 people dead !
