College Football Week 2: Predictions?

Tue Sep 05, 2006 1:35 pm

Well, with week one done, we're on to week 2! Let's take a look at some of the more interesting matchups:

Obviously at the top of the list has to be Ohio State making a visit to Austin to face Texas. This one could determine who is #1 in the nation early in the season. I think Ohio State edges it out, 20-17.

The early game this week is Oregon State going to Boise State for the final game of the four game series between the two. Oregon State looked very impressive week one against Eastern Washington. Boise State also thumped Sacramento State. I think OSU has more depth, and wins going away 28-17.

Auburn Travels to Mississippi State. This one should get ugly fast. I don't even want to predict how ugly it'll get.

Penn State travels to South Bend to face Notre Dame. This could be a great game. I think Penn State hangs close, but loses in the 4th quarter. Notre Dame 24, Penn State 14.

Iowa travels to Syracuse. Iowa is no doubt going to be favored, and will no doubt wint his one. I know nothing about either team.

Clemson travels to BC. On paper they should win, but how good is BC this year?

Arizona travels to LSU. This will be ugly. LSU thumps 'Zona.

Minnisota travels to Cal. This is a very important game for Cal. I think they aren't as good as everyone thinks. The Gophers win this one, and Cal has no chance at not only a BCS game, but the national title like Lee Corso predicted.

A good early season test for Georgia as they travel to South Carolina. Can SC shock Georgia?? I think so. That'll be my pretty big upset call of the week.

And, finally...Oregon travels to Fresno State. I pick Fresno, only because I hate the Ducks, and they are a hard place to play, and win at. They edge it out, though in a tight game.

Bah, I don't. Georgia's gonna thump USC.

And Auburn's gonna murder us. We'll be lucky to cover Vegas' 20.5 point line.

Colt Mcoy doesn't stand a chance against Troy Smith, Gonzo, and Ted Ginn Jr. I keep listening to these ESPN idiots think he invented the forward pass with his "masterful" performance against North Texas. IT'S NORTH FRIGGIN TEXAS FOR CRYIN OUTLOUD! A one legged grandma playing for the Hellen Keller all stars could have beaten North Texas. I say OSU rolls Texas this season.

The only game I think I'm qualified to give an opinion on:

OSU @ UT
Although I'm somewhat biased, I think Texas' defense will keep them in the game but they will end up losing by a TD. Colt McCoy tore through North Texas, a team that finished with an abysmal record last season. He looked pretty comfortable out there but this match up might be too much for such a n00b. As long as it's not a Chris Simms style chokefest, I'll swallow a hard fought loss.

Just for kicks...
Georgia @ S. Carolina
Without research, I'm picking S. Carolina. This just smells like upset to me, much like a 3-14 seed game in the NCAA Tournament.

There's no Vince Young this year, who was a one-man game-changer. OSU is loaded on offense, and has a young, but very tough defense.

I think tOSU* pulls it out against Texass. In last year's game, Texas was lucky enough to have Vince Young, this year, not so much. The Bucks win by 7.
Fresno will knock off Oregon at Bulldog Stadium. It will be a nailbiter, but Fresno pulls it out.

Oregon State beats Boise. Boise is overrated, OSU knocks them off on the SmurfTurf.

Penn St. knocks off the vastly overrated Irish 35-20. PSU has too much speed.

Miami kills FAMU, although after last night's debacle, maybe it will be another DI-AA over DI-A upset?? ScapeCoker has to go.

LSU beats Arizona, but it is closer than many think. Tuitama is the goods for UA.

Cal destroys Minnesota.
Clemson beats down BC.

We'll talk after PSU.

As for the Ohio St. - Texas game...

Texas wins.

Bottom line: OSU strength (offense) vs. Texas strength (defense) is a wash. If anybody has the edge, its the Texas defense, because OSU was not nearly as impressive against a weak NIU defense as I expected them to be, where Texas held a UNT team (with a good running back, actually as I recall the league leader in rushing yards in 2004, Jamario Thomas) to 95 yards total, and only 8 on the ground.

The OSU defense had more holes in it than swiss cheese. I don't understand how people can really believe that VY was the only player on Texas last year. We return all of our receivers (who had to catch all his passes) and all our running backs (sans one idiot...Ramonce Taylor) who didn't allow teams to totally stack up against Young, as well as a top 5 offensive line. Bottom line, we can still score plenty of points on offense, we just lost most of our explosiveness.

In reality we scored 4 fewer points against a comparable opponent from the first game of last season. Offense is not a problem for us.

Defense is, however, a problem for OSU. To put it simply, if they play like they did against NIU in the Shoe, they won't fare well in Austin against Texas.

From past experiences, Ted Ginn usually goes pretty quiet when he faces a good, fast defense...using Texas and Penn St. last year.

Texas wins 31-24.

Hook'em!

GT is a great team. USC almost lost to Fresno St last year.

SC is not a bad team, and they are playing at home

UT will win against OSU. I am not convinced that OSU has an offense capable of challenging UT's D.

I call the Penn State upset of ND.

How can anyone say that the 'Horns are going to whip OSU's ass??? It doesn't make any sense. If there was going to be an asswhipping, it would have been last year, with Vince Young. This year, the tOSU* defense is tough, and they have Ted Ginn and Troy Smith, as well as some good RB's in Pittman and Wells. OSU rolls, even if the game is in Austin. The Frosh QB for Texas (whose name escapes me right now) hasn't faced a test like this one. UNT is one thing, the Bucks are something completely different.

I think Brady Quinn's Heisman hopes got flushed down the toilet last weekend.

Well if he continues to play like that the rest of the season, but he's definitely not out of the race. The performances in the late season games and overall season stats have the biggest impact on the Heisman voting. Based on Brady's performance last year, the GT game was definitely an off-day for him. And if an off-day involves passing for 246 yards, completing over 60% of his passes, and not throwing any interceptions, that doesn't throw him out of the race. We just have to see if Quinn can perform more like we know he can and then improve some.

Overall the GT game was a wake-up call for the Irish. Hopefully that game deflates any kind of overconfidence that was built on pre-season hype. Penn State will be a huge test for them. I say it will stay fairly close, but the Irish will looked much more polished than last weekend and will prevail, 31-24. I'm taking a very quick weekend trip back to South Bend for this game and can't wait to go.

The highlight game of the week is #1 tOSU vs. #2 Texas. I say that Ohio State wins this one. They have a solid team coming back plus they'll be motivated for getting revenge for being beaten in a close one by Texas at home last year. Time to return the favor.

#12 Georgia at South Carolina should be interesting. We'll see what Spurrier has done with the Gamecocks. I think it could be a possible upset here.

Other than that, not too many major match ups. Most of the top 25 is still in early season warm-up mode by beating up on patsies. But the #1/#2 match up is going to be huge!

In terms of skill level, yes. But I was referring more to the fact that, for me anyway, whenever I see the tourney brackets, a 3-14 matchup always screams at me as an upset. This one is football's version of the matchup that has upset written all over it.

Whoever said that is delusional. There will be no asswhippings this Saturday in Austin.

Quote:
If there was going to be an asswhipping, it would have been last year, with Vince Young.

Do the names A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter mean anything to you? With those two on defense, it was hard to deliver a asswhipping (read: a win by a large margin) to OSU last year. IIRC Hawk (or Carpenter) managed to sack VY on one occasion. Might wanna ask Brady Quinn about that too. A.J. Hawk even sacked his sister.  Wink

Quote:
This year, the tOSU* defense is tough, and they have Ted Ginn and Troy Smith, as well as some good RB's in Pittman and Wells.

Well, Texas' defense is tough too, even if they have two CBs sitting out. Texas has some good receivers and if their running backs can grind it out, they have a shot. It's a good offense going against a good defense, something's gotta give here and it ain't gonna be a asswhipping.

Bah, I don't. Georgia's gonna thump USC.

Go ring your cowbell. There's no "thumping" in store, just as there hasn't been a "thumping" in the series since Georgia beat us in 2003. Four of the last six USC-UGA games have been decided by 6 points or less and a USC wracked with personnel problems came within a few plays of snuffing out UGA last year, ultimately losing 17-15. Let's see what history teaches about how the 'Cocks have done against the Dawgs since we began rebuilding in earnest in 2000:

2000: (At Columbia) W 21-10
2001: (At Athens) W 14-9
2002: (At Columbia) L 21-34
2003: (At Athens) L 7-31
2004: (At Columbia) L 16-20
2005: (At Athens) L 15-17

Now beyond that, consider that the weakest part of USC's game was supposed to be its defense. I think the game against MSU showed our D isn't as weak as some would believe it. Also, consider UGA's QB is making his first road start. We almost always play closely against UGA and we're due. I'm calling the upset. Of course if I didn't, what sort of USC fan would I be?

The Dogs haven't played too well @ Williams-Brice, having won 8 of the 13 played there since 1977. An interesting story is the the possibility of Joe Tereshinski being upstaged by freshman backup Matthew Stafford, who pretty much put himself in the #2 QB spot with his performance last week (Passing: 3-5, 40 yds. 1 TD; Rushing: 1-1, 19 yds.) Richt has said that he will use 2 QBs this week against the Gamecocks, but hasn't said who the #2 QB for the game will be (currently Stafford and Joe Cox are penciled in as co-#2 QB on the depth chart), but the thought is that Stafford will be the #2 this week.

See last years Fiesta Bowl, Notre Dame vs. Ohio State.

Like I said. Against good defenses, he goes quiet. ND was not a good defense.

I wish you were right about Penn State.  Sad I don't think it'll happen.

That was last year. They looked pretty good against G.T. Defense kept ND in the game.

Games I care about, mostly upsets:

Penn State over ND 23-17
Fresno State over Oregon 31-20
South Carolina over Georgia 27-24
Texas over Ohio State 26-19

Texan

I think it will be an easy win for the Cornhuskers. I never heard of the other team. Too bad they aren't the powerhouse they used to be.

Anyone see that Akron - NCSU game? So did the Wolfpack just give up on the last drive? Their defense looked completely lackluster in that final drive.

Penn State travels to South Bend to face Notre Dame. This could be a great game. I think Penn State hangs close, but loses in the 4th quarter. Notre Dame 24, Penn State 14.

Close, but no cigar.

Quoting Boston92 (Reply 13):
This is the year of the Irish!!

Yeah! (quoting myself!)

Quoting JetJock22 (Reply 14):
They are gonna have to do ALOT better than winning 14-10 over an unranked team if it is gonna be the year of the Irish. I think Brady Quinn's Heisman hopes got flushed down the toilet last weekend.

Brady allways starts off a little shaky, he'll get back like right now vs PSU.

Quoting Longhornmaniac (Reply 15):
We'll talk after PSU.

All Right

Quoting Boston92 (Reply 16):
You say unranked, I see a team that is really good that everyone looks past.
GT is a great team. USC almost lost to Fresno St last year.

Quoting JetJock22 (Reply 17):
And Boston92, GT is a great team. I just thought ND would have come out alot tougher than they did.

Hey, a win is a win.

Quoting NDSchu777 (Reply 21):
Well if he continues to play like that the rest of the season, but he's definitely not out of the race. The performances in the late season games and overall season stats have the biggest impact on the Heisman voting. Based on Brady's performance last year, the GT game was definitely an off-day for him. And if an off-day involves passing for 246 yards, completing over 60% of his passes, and not throwing any interceptions, that doesn't throw him out of the race. We just have to see if Quinn can perform more like we know he can and then improve some.

Play like what, winning every game?

It didn't.

Are you kidding me. You guys don't know how good ND is.

Sorry about all of that, I just had too!

Bah, I don't. Georgia's gonna thump USC.

So far so good... 15-0 Dawgs at the half.....

Quoting Srbmod (Reply 31):
An interesting story is the the possibility of Joe Tereshinski being upstaged by freshman backup Matthew Stafford,

Damn I'm good. Joe T. is out for the rest of the game, and thankfully the Stafford interception resulted in the Dawgs scoring a safety.

AHHHHHHH my Bulldogs lost to Oregon! But by a touchdown again. Past 6 meetings before tonight were won by an average of 3 points. You can always count on a good game if you play Fresno State. You must admit that.

Boston92, I gladly accept your criticism! I think things will look very good for Brady if he has more performances like he did against Penn State!

What a game yesterday. I was just in South Bend to see the Irish play in person. I went in thinking Penn State would keep it a lot closer. Joe Paterno must be rolling in his grave!
