From Central London To Gatwick

Thu Sep 07, 2006 2:44 pm

Hey all,

Two good friends of mine will be in London for a couple days and are staying in Central London. They have a flight to catch out of Gatwick on Saturday morning. I was wondering what's the best way to get to Gatwick from Central London? The Gatwick Express looks good, but it's bloody expensive for a 30 minute journey. How about Thameslink? Can't find any price info on Thameslink.

They are flying Ryanair (for shame) out of Gatwick. Ryanair flies out of the South Terminal correct?

Thanks!

Kris

Hi Kris

I use Southern trains. It's a frequent, fairly fast service and is a lot cheaper than the express. Minor downside is it is a commuter train, so it tends to be a lot busier than the express service.

Hope that helps

Sean

edit: just noticed your friends fly on a Saturday, so commuters less of a problem.

And yes, Ryanair use the South terminal.

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man... Landing is the first!

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the info! I'll definitely convey it to them. I'm sure they'd rather pay £9 vs £14  Smile

Thanks again,
Kris

Only 5 minutes slower if the select correctly.

Thameslink and Southern will cost pretty much the same and Southern makes multiple trips per hour that stop at only Clapham Junction and/or East Croydon, which means they are only 5 minutes slower than the Gatwick Express. Weekends are a bit more hit and miss as there are fewer trains and usually they make more stops, but you should still be able to find one fast train per hour.

It also goes to London Bridge, but as I stated before, it takes longer.
