Little Signs That Tell You You're Getting Older

Fri Sep 08, 2006 6:05 pm

Yesterday, my new shaving brush arrived.
It's hand-made (in Germany, not in a sweatshop in the Far East) of fine silver tip badger hair and olive wood.

Back in my younger years, I didn't care much about how my shaving brush looked like, and I would've never spent a single thought on spending a small fortune on a shaving brush. But this may just be one of those things that change when you are getting older: A little luxury here, a little more comfort there, and some habits are getting more important - such as the wet shave in the morning.

But then I thought it's not the routine that's gaining value, it's the knowledge that there are some people not far from Dresden who mounted your watch and only a little more south, there's a woman who made your shaving brush. This seems so simple and easily comprehensible in a world in which the strawberrys for your strawberry yogurt come from Poland, the milk from Denmark, the sugar from Hungary, the plastic cups from Morocco and the metal caps from China before it's all put together in southern Germany. Or are those thoughts again typical for oldtimers?

Let's hope I will never start to like the Eurovision Song Contest or some shit like that.

Oh, I will be 39 next month and here's my new gentle-to-the-skin shaving brush.

Haven't yet seen too many signs that I'm getting older, but then again, I'm only 22 to begin with  Wink . That said, one small sign is that I have stopped to listen to Rap and HipHop on a daily basis and am now into rock/hard&heavy music, including certain stuff from the 70's and 80's.

A shaving brush ? That's more a sign that you're living in the the 19th century. Do they not have Gillette where you come from ? Helloooooo - they call it "progress" for a reason ! I take it you use a cut-throat razor sharpened with a leather strap, and splash on Bay Rum when you're done, put on your frock coat and top hat, and go to work on your horse ?

My dad, when he was a lecturer at university, knew he was getting older when the mothers of the students were more attractive than the students themselves.

Can't say I've seen any old git indicators, apart from the aching bones when trying to get moving in the morning. My left ankle is always stiff for some reason.

When new adult (over 21) co-employees are young enough to be your children.
When your children are adults.
When you don't listen to the music as loudly as you used to, except so you can still hear it.
When you don't run for a bus anymore.
You need reading glasses.

Tough call this one.

I certainly think things are changing for me. I will be 29 shortly, and although it may not be that old, I now have a proper job (after 8 years as a student) and associated responsibilities.

I have certainly had to change my lifestyle. Before, I would be out on the lash every night, nowadays, after work on a 'school night' I look forward to getting home, eating, and reading a book with a glass of wine.

I now will plan my heating at home, I too buy expensive wet razor blades and have changed many habits. Hell, I even go to bed early(ush) so I can be up at 7am!

I now refuse to watch ITV and watch the news much more. I notice the state of houses as I walk past, and shock horror, even wrote a letter of complaint to Virgin Trains (something i would never have done before!)

My real sell-out though has been almost unspeakable. I would never have done it in the past, as I was an inverted snob oik. It's still hard to even admit, but I now shop for food at Marks & Spencers.

At least I don't buy my slacks from there though, I'll leave that for Skidmarks!

It's rare that I'll agree with JGPH1A, but a shaving brush? Which century do YOU live in? Sheesh, I knew they were a bit set in their ways in Germany but that takes the biscuit! Big grin

Gillette shaving Gel and a decent 4 blade razor, can't go wrong! Big grin

I once read that you have finally become an adult, when you are no longer craving to stay up as long as possible in the evening, but instead prefer to get in bed early just in time to get a good dose of sleep.

Which would put the start of adulthood for me at the end of my years of study about half a decade ago.

It's perfectly possible to feel old at age 22.  cry

The exchange students I helped select for the AFS programme after my own year abroad, whose weekend orientation camps I organised and whose family interviews I did, are now university students themselves. Even their younger siblings now have driving licences, for heaven's sake! Nowadays, I am one of the old farts at AFS activities - and it's only been five years and a few months since I returned!  hissyfit

Then, there is my school... my parents are both teachers, so naturally every teacher at school knew me; some of them since I was born. But today... half of the teachers' faces there are those of strangers, and don't even get me started on the students.

So yes, I actually feel old at age 22. Crazy world, that.  Silly

Please, it's a fine silver tip badger hair brush.

Quoting JGPH1A (Reply 3):
Do they not have Gillette where you come from ?

I use a Gilette Sensor (or was it a Sensor Excel?), but I still need a brush that helps to build up a thick lather. No, I don't use canned foam, and I don't believe it's a "progress" to make shaving a brainless routine to rush through. The old fashioned method of shaving is the best shave you can get.

I found Bay Rum at Manufactum.de, a mail-order house "for the good old things" http://www.manufactum.de. I wish I had the idea to found Manufactum. They are doing great. But no, curently I'm using "Old Insbrucker" which is as old as it sounds.  Wink

No, but I usually wear real shoes that come close to boots:

(in black)

The usual shoe you see nowadays is called "Halbschuh" in Germany which translates into "half a shoe" and even in the 60s, a real man would never have dared to expose himself to the public wearing a "Halbschuh".

Not always a luxury some of us can afford. However, when I was in Turkey a few years ago now, the barber in the Turkish Air Force accomodation gave me an excellent haircut. He then gave me a shave, using brush, lather and cut-throat razor. And I have to say it was the most amazing, rrelaxing experience I have had. I don't think I've ever had a smoother, cleaner shave before or since.

So get Cornish sorted JG, he has a lot to learn ! Big grin Of course, you get train the boot boy (Pe@rson) to shave! Big grin

Well im 46 this November, and i have noticed,a few things happening within my body, like, its taking me longer to pee,(sorry guys).I can go all day with out going to the loo, I drink coke or lemonade to help take away the bloating stomach after a meal,my skin is drying up,and flakeing, and my bowel system is up the swannie, and im fed up with shaving, and im getting the middle age spread, and i cant eat as much as i used to,and i weigh 10 stone,a stone too much for my hight, which is 5 foot 4 inches tall. But the most inportant thing is, my wife Linda still loves me,so as long as you have a good woman by your side, who gives a shit. Oh i dont care about my gray hair,as its cool.

so skidmarks, getting old is not inportant, its what you can fisicly do when your old that matters.

Well, I can spell for a start Dave Big grin Physically, hehehe!

I dont have much grey hair out of the full head of hair I do have. I still have the skin tone of a younger man, my middle age spread is doing what it says on the tin - spreading, my waterworks and digestive system are all in full working order, my joints ache a bit (arthritis setting up for a good stab later I think) and I get horrible acid reflux now and then but thats all part of the ageing process.

I'm quite chuffed with how I am and fully expect a long and disease free life. Just like my Grandad who was 92 when he died - and that was out of boredom I think!!

All I need to do is persuade my wife that I am still capable and I'm home and dry! Big grin

Mine constantly reads 86 kg and actually needs batteries.

Quoting NoUFO (Reply 38):
but this one can calculate body fat, water and muscles

Apart from the fact that these cheap ones do miscalculate because they only use your legs for measuring...let's not get too deep into your latest results!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

While technically "offshore", cashing your giro at the Douglas branch of Bradford & Bingley is not QUITE the same as depositing bullion at the Commerzbank branch in Georgetown, Cayman Islands.

Oh, woken up after your afternoon nap have we?

We are sofistikated over here. We have lots of banks, some of them legal. Some of them aphiliated to the Commerzbank in downtown Dusseldorf. Big grin

When you can't make it through the night without getting up to take a leak.

When you catch yourself thinking, Those damned kids with their rock music and baggy pants...

When you'd rather stay in and watch TV than go out drinking.

When body parts ache that never used to.

When you realize you stopped keeping up with the latest fashion trends several years back and are now tragically non-hip.

When someone says, "Mr. Skidmarks? Oh. Sorry. I thought you were someone else."

Actually yes - it was lovely, nothing like a post-prandial pre-tea-ial nap in the afternoons.

can not build up a dense lather using your finger-tips.

well, I can. I for instance use the Gillette Gel or some good Italian products and achieve an excellent foaming, on the chin, around the moustache and in two or three "alternative" places
