News Traveling Around The World...

Sat Sep 09, 2006 12:26 am

There is a game played here, called "teléfono descompuesto" (broken telephone). One person will think of a long phrase and whisper it to another person; this other person will pass it on to another, and then to another... until the last person in the line will say the phrase aloud. It's almost granted the phrase will differ considerably from the original, which often leads to some funny confusions. Big grin

Anyway, this seems to be the case with news articles as well...

This morning I read on the news about the greatest robbery in the history of the country (we're talking millions here!). Since it occurred inside a restricted area in the airport building, I thought it would be relevant to post something in Civil-Av, and so I searched for more sources of information (namely, articles in English).

The local media reports three gunmen held up the vehicle that transported the money, tied the driver and the guard, and fled with USD 8 million. No people were injured.

Reuters Latin America adds that the vehicle was transporting USD 11 million in total, of which 8 million were stolen.

Forbes.com (via Associated Press) also states that the amount stolen was 8 million, but gives the original amount transported as 22 million (!).

The Daily Telegraph in Australia reports the amount stolen as the whole 22 million (!!); it's also reporting a shootout where one person died (!!!)

I was puzzled to find out such differences in the reports from the same incident  crazy  ... I'll be sticking with the local media version, which I have confirmed in the three main newspapers here. But still, makes you wonder what happens with the news as they jump from source to source...

Saludos,
Carmen

Hahaha, I can assure you weren't the only one!

Chatting with a friend from El Salvador: "Hey Carmen, that security company where you work wasn't the one in charge of the money in the airport, was it?"

Thank God it wasn't...  relieved

Still, the truck wasn't carrying 22 million (or so they say)...

Reminds me of that joke where the American sees a kangaroo and asks the Australian what kind of animal is that. "What, don't you have grasshoppers in America?" Big grin

It still worries me though if TSA or the FAA declare GUA as an airport not worthy of international flights, that would kill Guatemala for good.

Hehehe, hey if you wanted the airport outside the city, well now you got it => SAL

Naaah... Last year there was a $7.4 million robbery in MIA and it still gets international flights.

Then again, there was that $129 million robbery at Heathrow... but that was Monopoly money

Forgot to add:

As much as I love the place and have good friends there...

... no way in hell we're letting that happen!  box
