How Much Can You Bench?

Wed Sep 13, 2006 2:41 am

The title is pretty self-explanatory...i'm bored and curious to see if there's any other lifters on here and what you can do. My max right now is about 225x1, the best I've ever been is probably 225x4...not huge but decent for my meager 6', 170lb frame. Anyways, lets try to keep this reasonably truthful/on-topic.

I was pretty big into powerlifting, My max was 515 x 1 about two years ago. Now I've slacked off greatly, I'm around 350. At the time I was 240lbs. I've started to get back into it, I forgot what a long road it is!

Whats more impressive.. being able to lift 2 x 225lbs or 12 x 135lbs..

Which is better for that matter?

Best is 315 x 3. Added 40lbs to it just to see if I could do it and that bar pinned me like a little girl.

I would say that 2x225 is considerably better...I would be hard pressed to do 225 more than once or twice right now, but i could most likely do 135 at least 20 times.

I've done 225 x 10, which works out to a single rep of 300 pounds. The most I've done in an actual single rep is 275, though when doing it I could tell I wasn't near my limit. I've also done ten reps with a pair of 100-pound dumbbells.

Here is a chart showing typical bench press amounts by bodyweight. The bodyweight amounts correspond with the weight categories used in powerlifing competiton:

A couple of bench press factoids:

One of the tests given to prospective NFL players at the annual Combine is the number of reps they can manage at 225 pounds. Quarterbacks, wide receivers, kickers and punters are exempt from the test. Most men manage between 10 and 35 reps, with linemen at the top and cornerbacks at the bottom.

Outside of powerlifting, the athletes with the best bench presses as a function of bodyweight probably are Olympic gymnasts. I have read that essentially all of them can bench in excess of double bodyweight and some approach triple bodyweight.

The most I've ever benched is 170, at about 3 or 4 reps. I've never tried to max out and actually see how much I could bench for one rep.

I've also never lifted for more than bout 2 or 3 months at a stretch. Get bored of it too quickly.

I'm 5'10", and was around 150 lbs when I benched 170.

Interesting...I've heard of a similar practice in the NBA, only the weight is 175. Apparently Shaun Livingston (of the clippers?) couldn't even do one rep...pretty incredible for an NBA player.

Indeed there is such a practice, though the weight is 185. Here is a list of the most recent results:

I can bench 335 one time. Sometimes for fun I'll do 215 about 10-15 times, and 135 30+ times.

I am about 6'1 and weigh 210. It took me 4 years of hard work to get to this point. The first time I ever tried to bench, I failed at 135.

That's using the one-rep-max calcuator at Exrx.net:
http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/OneRepMax.html
It's not 100% precise, but I've found it to be reasonably accurate. Chances are, ten reps at 225 would work out to a single rep in the 290 - 310 range.

The most I've ever benched was 430 pounds, and that was only once. That was my freshman year of college, and I was 6'4'' at 339 pounds, and trained everyday for shotput and discus. I don't do any weight training now. I only run, and weigh in at 235 pounds. If I had to guess, I'd say I can still mash 300 pounds pretty easily, but I would do a full body warm up and stretch before attempting that.

Well...I've been taking a new product called "Anator" by Muscletech for about a week now. Like any other weightlifting supplement it has huge hype, but I was surprised to see that its already given me some impressive results. After just a week of taking it, my bench went up from 205x4 to 225x3, a set of negatives @225, then 205x6. Needless to say ill keep taking it...although at $90 for 16 servings the price is pretty outrageous.

In my younger days, I would do 3 or 4 sets of 10-12 reps with about 220lbs. My best ever was a set of about 5 reps with about 310lbs. Only did that once though. Nowadays, I can only do about 3 sets of 7-8 reps with 220lbs  crying .
