Greatest Sportsmen Or Sportswomen

Wed Sep 13, 2006 8:23 am

I was having a conversation the other day and for some reason, the topic turned to sports.

Okay, I'll admit, it was about Tiger Woods. I was saying how I thought that he'd really hit a bad streak recently and had just rebounded.

The question then became, who was or is the greatest sportsman or sportswoman (??) in history?

In addition to Tiger Woods, here are some candidates, in no particular order:

Pele, the soccer phenom;
Babe Ruth, the American baseball legend;
Willy Mays, ditto;
Muhammad Ali, world boxing champion;
Joe Montana, NFL superstar;
Steve Young, ditto;
David Beckham, the contemporary soccer (world football) star;
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, basketball superstar; and,
Bobby Hull, hockey legend.

The above is not a representative sampling and are basically just a number of people that have occurred to me.

I'm not a sports nut, so forgive me if I've forgotten someone obvious.

Thanks in advance for your cool answers.

Its a tough job to pick one of so many great athletes and the variances of thier talents due to the different demands on thier sports. Ill add a few comments just for debate purposes.

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
Bobby Hull, hockey legend.

For hockey, I would put Gordy Howe there instead of Hull, as much as I like Hull, Howe is Mr. Hockey, Gretzky put up bigger numbers, but Howe was better as an all around player. Gordy hatrick is a goal, assist and a fight.

Great response. And, I can't believe I forgot to put Gretzky up there.

Sometimes all you can do is look them in the eye and ask " how much did your mom drink when she was pregnant with you?"

This is a subject of great debate. It all depends on how you view it. Are they great because they achieved so much, be it in sometimes controversial fashion or is it because they were really fair people on the pitch so to speak?

One definition might be "larger than life". Muhammad Ali certainly was that, and more.

He grew to be a celebrity far exceeding even his prowess in the sport, actually.

If to name one:

Jahangir Khan (Squash)
Among other achievements like the 10 British Open titles, the guy was unbeaten for five and a half straight years accumulating 555 victories without being defeated.

And more to the point, the next highest average is about 60. Comparing people across different sports is impossible, but when you have someone who is statistically half as good again as the next best person, over the period of 140 years of playing the game internationally, it's a truly phenomenal record.

Cricket is an interesting sport, in that it attracts such a devoted following.

I must say that it must be to the British what baseball is to Americans; the parallels are obvious.

Ironically, I was just reading an article about how there is new suspicion about alleged involvement in doping pointing at Armstrong; I have no clue whether this suspicion is really justified. I'll try to find a link to the article and edit this message accordingly.

[EDIT:]

Here is a link to a BBC Sport article stating that Armstrong has vigorously denied the new alleged insinuation:

This is off track I know, but does anyone else wonder how many people there are out there like Moe Norman. With amazing God given talents but other weaknesses that hold them back. You haven't heard of him so here is a link.

Not exactly. Cricket is a much more international sport than baseball, in that 10 "nations" (The West Indies play as one unified team) play it at the very highest level, with many, many more at that level below that is comparable with baseball outside the US and Canada. As popular as cricket might be in England, it is nowhere near the feverish near-religion that it is in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, where virtually the entire populations are utter devotees. Barfbag once called cricket an Indian game accidentally invented by the English, and that's pretty near the mark.

Well, still and all, baseball is very popular in Japan and Cuba. Now, those are two countries where the histories and traditions are otherwise quite different from that of the United States. I'm given to understand that baseball is also played elsewhere in Asia and Latin America.

Baseball is also at least semi-popular in Canada, although one shouldn't look too closely at the Expos to prove it; the Blue Jays, at least at one time, were resounding proof nevertheless.

Didn't say it wasn't. But it doesn't even begin to compare to the fanaticism for cricket in the Asian countries mentioned above (not forgetting all the other countries where cricket is as big as, if not bigger, than in England). The chief power centre of cricket is India, not England. Don't make the mistake of thinking cricket is like baseball in that respect. Baseball is biggest in the US. Cricket is not biggest in England; not anywhere near.

Infinitely more. Same is true of Pakistan, Bangladesh (even though they're not very good at the moment) and Sri Lanka. It's probably also true of Australia, though by a much smaller margin. I used the term "near-religion" when talking about India advisedly. They are completely and utterly obsessed with the game. Think about that: 1 billion people far, far, far more into cricket than 350 million Americans with baseball, or 60 million Britons with cricket or football ever will be.

I rode my bike 8 miles last night soooo...

Lance Armstrong gets my vote all the way. The way I look at it is even if he was juiced out of his brain (He was not), what he did was incredible. Overcoming cancer and just working his ARRSSS off to compete with arguably the best conditioned athletes in the world. Not to mention all the work Lance does for charity.

2nd has got to be Tiger, total class, total dedication, just nails..period.

My source was Don Wittman who described it as such during a Jets game. The person who scored the hat trick was Tie Domi.

But a quick search of the Web reveals the fact that I was wrong, yet again. Bushpilot had it right.
