Do You Remember Maico Motorcycles

Thu Sep 14, 2006 9:22 am

I was talking to a new Co-worker today and the topic came up about older motocross dirt bikes. I mentioned that I still have in storage a 1977 AW250. I've owned this bike since spring/summer 1978 and has not run since late 1981. This a very original bike with some light dust and a very nice coffin tank, perfect for restoration. In resent years I've seen in motocross magazines there is a new thing with people racing "Classic Motocross". I've been out of racing for 25 years. Is there any A.Netters that have or had a Maico? I grew up in Plano Texas area and saw the 1977 race at Rabbit Run where Roger DeCoster won, but Team Maico was there! Please share your stories.

Yes. A part of my youth was spent in Alaska and dirt bikes were a very common means of transportation. I knew several people that had Maicos. I still have old Dirt Bike magazines packed away from the late 70's that praised the new "monoshock" design that Yamaha had just come out with and featured the duels between Bob "Hurricane" Hannah and Brad Lackey. It was an awesome time to be growing up.

Here's a good one for ya: My cousin (female) had a Bultaco! Anybody remember those?

I remember that time frame well. I was in JR High School and I remember the argument on the monoshock, seems my firends claimed it had no future. One of my friends rode Suzuki and another Honda. I still had a 1975 Yamaha DT125. I was a bit pro-Yamaha back then. I saved my lunch money to buy "Motocross Action" mag! Bultaco's were great! We had some neighbors that had a Husky and seems like one had a CZ. Lots of great memories.

If you want to be transported back to that time watch "On Any Sunday II". Great memories.
