Gonzalez And D-Backs Part Ways

Fri Sep 15, 2006 12:02 pm

For Arizona Diamondbacks fans, Luis Gonzalez, the face of the Diamondbacks for the past eight seasons, and a 2001 World Series game 7 hero when his bloop single off Yankee's Mariano Rivera drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, was told by team officials that they have no intention of bringing him back for a ninth season. He had a club option for $10M for 2007, but with his age 39, his decline in performance, led to the parting of the ways. Look for him to land with the Devil Rays next season. One strange fact, on Tuesday night against Washington he became the oldest player ever to hit 50 doubles in a season. Aside from baseball, Luis is a CLASS ACT.

Why?

He makes too much for what he can offer the team. Isn't he getting up there in age?

He was a good player for the Cubs for 1 year. I wish they had kept him.

Yes he just turned 39, whats to stick around to get 3,000 hits but he is nearly 650 hits away at his age, and his overall performance has been in declined so I doubt he will get there. Thanks for the great memories as a D-Back.

I said the same thing when the Mariners traded away Jamie Moyer.

A true class act, and they trade him. One of the few bright spots on the team in recent years. I hope he comes back in a trade, though.

We loved him when he was here in Houston, it's nice to see him go on and get a ring (with the series winning hit, no less), what a great guy.

Doesn't he and his wife have twins (or triplets)?

Triplets is the answer. When he first came to Arizona, he rented a home in our neighorhood in Gilbert, what a great guy then neighorhood kids loved him and hated it when he moved to the "big" house in Scottsdale. While he is a great guy, he should realize that his time as a everyday ball player is just about up. I read in the paper that since 2004 he has batted .235 with runner in scoring position. Not good.
