My View On College

Tue Sep 19, 2006 1:41 am

Ok, So I just started in on my third week of college. A few observations:

I will have emphasema by the end of the semester: Everyone effin smokes. It sucks... I reek by the time I cross the quad.

Professors actually respect and listen to their students: Amazing, I know. I have a political science professor that last week I had one of the most amazong conversations ive ever had with a teacher. I had a question on something discussed in class and he spent 20 mins discussing it with me and asked for my feedback/opinions on the matter.

Class doesnt really suck: Remember how in High school there was always theose 2-3 kids who just really diddnt give a shit? Well in college there isnt any of that. All of my classes it's 1 to 3 hours of questions, listening and notes. No bullshit. Its awesome.

Parking sucks: Nuff said here, that and it sucks if you miss the shuttle.

Well thats it for now. Just thought id share this with you.

Yup, definitely a lot of smokers in college. Kinda depends on the crowd you hang around, I guess. I smoked quite a bit socially when I was at school.

You'll find this is quite variable, depending on the professor and the student. But it is amazing how far some of the professors will go to be helpful.

Have to disagree here. Class sucks on principle. Even good classes ultimately suck.  Smile

They charged some hundreds of dollars per semester for parking at USC. Luckily, I didn't have a car. My recommendation is to get a bike.

Where do you go to school? Somewhere near Chicopee?

We have that too at my school, and they say that University kids are supposed to be smart.

This is very true, I take classes that acutally interest me, which is a big bonus once you get out of high school.

I think that's a standard across all University's/Colleges. My University just bought a whole street of houses, knocked them down over the summer and are paving it as we speak.

Get to know your professors throughout your college career, on a personal level. I don't know how big your school/classes are, but I went to a school with 7K undergrads, classes ranging from 6-30 people. I ended up having great relationships with two professors. I would go over to their house for dinner, help them with PC problems, sit in their office talk about sports etc. It was great, they can help you down the road (letter of recommendations etc) and in many other ways.

Justin, I think it's great that you are happy with what you've found at college. This is your first taste of the real world. You've learned already that if you show a genuine interest in something, another will take the time provide a thoughtful explanation. Your positive disposition has been rewarded. It only gets better from here.

Keep it up, and we want to hear more stories about your progress and experience as time goes by.

It's actually not that bad here (Lehigh). I only smoke cigars on occasion, but there are definitely a fair share of smokers, although I don't get bothered by it.

I remember freshman year, I met this kid who was literally already high on the first day after move in. He told me he was high during the SAT, and I asked him what he got. His response? 1530.  eyebrow

Kind of humbling when the potheads are even smart as hell.

I walk everywhere if I can, so it's not that big an issue, although parking is really tight here.

Amazing what having to pay a few grand to take the class can do to someone's work ethic.

And let me say what others have already said. Getting to know instructors on a more personal, anywhere from friends to marrying their first born  Smile, can help you in the long run.

Very true up north as well. They make sure you know you're not an idiot for asking the question and thank you for bringing it up. Of course, then they pepper you with questions about it, what you think, why the court decided it this way, how else could they have decided it, etc. Still a nice, respectful attitude, though!

No, they're getting money from me and I'm getting a degree from them. I just never talk to them, I go to all the classes, do all the readings, and if I don't understand, I figure it out on my own. I figure I must be a prof's dream student, they get to make their money, and I create no extra work for them.

I like to fly below the radar. Even in a class of 30 the prof will never know my name. I also never put my name on any assignments, papers or exams, just my student number.

As far as the SAT thing, I wouldn't trust too many people upfront about their sat scores, especially someone who qualifies it with "i was high/hungover/etc." when I took it. If i had a dime for everytime someone has told me that here, lol.

None of that here in Calgary Big grin . There is a no-smoking policy for indoors, so unless you intentionally stand next to a smoker outside and inhale their fumes, then you're safe...

I'm not that far into the school year yet to actually have the opportunity to directly discuss something with the professors, but throughout class, they're always asking if we have a question about something discussed, and they answer the question to the best of their ability.

I wouldn't know personally, as I resort to public transportation (AKA the bus), but from what I hear, you're lucky to find a parking spot CLOSE to the university, and if you do, you're going to pay for it through the nose...

Also, dorms suck!

My double-occupancy room is only 15ft x 10ft (4.57m x 3.58m), and is unconditioned. It gets to be 89ºF (31.6ºC) on hot days

One of my proffessors said "You pass college with common sense and becoming best friends with the teachers, you don't pass with good grades, you have to earn it, you dont pass by doing the work and getting a pat on the back, you pass by showing HOW you did the homework..."

I thought it was a nice thing to say, it may not ring true for everyone but it is something to think about.

I, like, Justin found how much they really do care about you as a student, if they see you are struggling they really are concerned and want to help you out.

The freedom I got in college compared to high school was amazing.

I really enjoy college, I have made a few friends through it and I keep in touch with my former teachers after I leave them through e-mails or visiting the office on their free hours.

Being a full time student in college is great experience! Perfect place for 18-24 year old folks to enjoy their moments away from home and real work world.

You never know what college is like until you graduate -- one night, I saw my professor at a night club -- he was bartending! I said to myself "Can't be him - my professor working as a bartender!" .. I went up to him and bought a beer and we said nothing about it.

O.K. I've been outdone, where do/did you go to school? Sounds like Cadet57 is lucky on this one; his parking fees were included.

I go to Georiga Tech...downtown Atlanta, hence the parking fees...though even considering location it's still ridiculous...

Yea, IDK if you are familiar with W.Mass, but I go to Holyoke Community and appied to Massart for next fall.

I'm at Northeastern right down the street, I am looking at the main Massart building right now from my dorm window.
A-10 Thunderbolt II, ugly as hell, efficient as hell, would you like to meet my boomstick?

I don't think it's nearly as bad as everybody makes it out to be. I took it the year it came out, and managed to get into the school of my choice.

I would have nothing against the added material, I would just be pissed off about having to sit there for another hour or two on a Saturday.

Mine was only $55 a year.  Smile
