Tax Banding - Do You Agree With It?

Tue Sep 19, 2006 2:35 am

In many countries, if you earn more, you pay more in income tax or other taxes - do you agree with this? Are the lower earners entitled to pay less for civic services etc? Do they use them less?

Is it fair?

Thoughts please.

If you lived in the US, you would think the rich paid a lower percent with all the whining that goes on.  Yeah sure

A little more is fine, but you can't go overboard and overtax the rich. That's the money that powers the economy, and it will do much less good with the government.

The problem comes down to 'how much is enough'. Yes it's true as a function of absolute dollars the rich pay tons more in taxes then anyone else. The problem is it is impossible for someone who makes $30,000/year and pays about $4,000 in taxes and has nothing to show for it at the end of the year to understand someone paying 4.5 million in taxes and pocketing 5.5. To someone making $30K, 5.5 million is exorbitently sick money for anyone to 'have' to have. Yeah, it's a bitch that someone making 10 only walks away with a little over 1/2, but damn  Wow!

But it doesn't matter what the lower income people think. They have no right to say what others do with their money. And the much higher percents start at a much lower income than $5 million. There are plenty of upper middle class people that are in the middle, get the higher percent, that are hardly the "rich" the Democrats talk about.
