Pete Rose "Sorry" Baseballs Auctioned Off

Wed Sep 20, 2006 9:40 am

I just found this strange story on the front page of the website:

"Rose's 'I'm Sorry' Baseballs"

Basically, the story says that a New Jersey auction house, Robert Edward Auctions, received from the estate of a deceased baseball memorabilia collector a box of 30 baseballs inscribed with Pete Rose's autograph along with an inscribed apology from the former Cincinnati Reds manager (and record hitter), who, in 1989, was banned for life from baseball after having been caught betting on baseball.

Each ball sported an inscription, in block letters, saying, "I'm sorry I betted on baseball", along with Rose's autograph. Even though Rose did not make any money from these signed balls, this did not stop them from being passed from one collector to the other, who died and (unwittingly) left them to be sold at auction by his estate.

What do you think of this story? What's your opinion on the selling of (and attendant profit-making from) these unusual baseballs?

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made... (Psalm 139:14)
