Matisyahu....Your Thoughts?

Thu Sep 21, 2006 3:41 am

I have met him a few times around the synagogues in the city. Nice enough guy, very friendly. Don't really care for his music too much though. Some songs are good others just don't do it for me.......Your thoughts?

I saw him perform live at MSG (opened for OAR), and it was interesting. Not exactly what I'm in to, but interesting.

I didn't exactly go for the music.

Maybe you'd like them a little more if they dressed up like clowns.  Wink

Touche..

I saw OAR two years ago with Howie Day...They played too much new stuff and not enough of the original music. The crowd was the worst crowd I'd ever seen period. The concert was 1/3 sold out, and no one cheered or sang with the band until the last song (Crazy Game of Poker). I thought the concert was so-so. But I think they sold out from their roots of college music/reggae that got them popular. Now they sound like a pop-run of the mill-Matchbox 20..

I agree, that reggae-ish stuff is their best, and I'm not too much a fan of their last album. It's too bad the show you went to wasn't that good, the MSG show was completely sold out and the crowd was really into it.

I really like his "King With out a Crown", both music and especially the lyrics. It is amazing how he is able to put words on something that is so hard to explain  Smile

Me likes...

Here's my problem with the guy. All he is doing is a rehash of "dancehall" music that so many Jamaican folks have sung for years. Those guys have toiled in obscurity with their music (perhaps for good reason) but here comes this gimmic of a rapping Orthodox (or is his Hasidic) Jewish guy and everyone thinks he is the greatest musical thing since sliced bread and is the voice of a generation.

His music is fine if Dancehall is your thing but I'm betting if he were John Smith from Des Moines he wouldn't have seen the light of day.

I like him but, it almost all sounds the same from him... I'm jealous he's doing something he loves without selling himself short. Granted it makes his music a bit more menial to the general populace, but I sure he sleeps VERY well at night  Wink
