University Internet Charges In UK

Fri Sep 22, 2006 1:55 am

Just been speaking to a friend who is at Uni and he told me that if you want to connect to the internet eg; from your room it costs £25 a month and it has to be paid a year in advance!  Wow! That's a lot of cash if you are a student to part with in one go.

So I was just wondering are all universities in the UK the same?

We get free internet here, and most of the campus is wireless. Of course, I'm not in the UK.  Wink

 duck  Here's another useless reply:
I live off-campus, share a flat with three others and we pay €30 a month for a 2K DSL flatrate.

All my university accomodation had internet included for free since it was the campus LAN anyway. I think in one of the cases I had to pay a onetime fee of £12 or something.

I'm not suprised TBH - I have a friend at Bath who was downloading all sorts, almost 24/7 - entire series' of TV programmes, music albums, films, as well as normal browsing. Which will cost the uni a lot of bandwidth. Apparantly they have since limited bandwidth, though.

At Warwick it was free for on-campus accommodationwhen I was there. Although it was partly covered by extortionate room rent prices which constantly went up well above inflation.

I am pretty sure you could be thrown out of uni for doing that.

I think that is what the rule was changed to - though by then they just had an internal file-share, which apparantly had most of the internet on it.

My university offers free internet, but boy oh boy is it sensored!

- Skype is not allowed because the Uni phone company who make sure we all have premium rate phones in our rooms to use instead complained.
- No download programs are allowed, because some sick ****ers used them to download child porn several years ago.
- MSN is allowed, but you can only have one conversation open at a time or it jams, and even then webcams are blocked and so is all audio for the same reason as Skype and all other web based voice messaging services.
- Speed is limited to that of basic dialup so downloading anything is painfully slow.
- 2 week net bans handed out for non compliance with the rules.

Do I need to mention that it sucks?
