This thread is about Kinky Friedman. Novelist/songwriter/politician/former columnist for Texas Monthly is running for Governor of Texas. He seems to be too racy for the establishment.
Rivals seize upon 26-year-old joke
By CHRISTY HOPPE / The Dallas Morning News
AUSTIN – A crass joke using the n-word that Kinky Friedman told 26 years ago has prompted his opponents to call for an apology – a move Mr. Friedman dismissed as gamesmanship.
Mr. Friedman said those who are dredging up old quotes and jokes are busy trying to show how politically correct they are so no one will ask them why they haven't achieved improvements in education or immigration reform.
Another racially charged Friedman remark emerges

Another racially charged remark by independent governor candidate Kinky Friedman emerged Thursday, this time in an audio clip of a 1980 Houston nightclub performance in which he used a racial slur.
Friedman, now 61, was making fun of bigots in a comedy routine, said his spokeswoman, Laura Stromberg. She said Friedman has tried to expose and lampoon racism.
"While Rick Perry was cheerleading in college and Chris Bell was being potty trained, Kinky Friedman was picketing segregated restaurants in Austin to integrate them," Friedman's campaign said in a prepared statement. His campaign said Friedman is a threat to the two-party system, so his opponents are digging through fictional books, comedy shows and song lyrics to try to paint him as a racist.
The Friedman campaign statement said those offended by his Houston nightclub statement are taking "completely out of context a controversial word that Kinky was using in a 1980 stand-up performance to lampoon racists. Kinky was on stage exposing bigotry through comedy and satire."

Kinky says comments are satire, not racism

University of Texas at Austin political science Professor Bruce Buchanan said the comments are "consistent with his general irreverence," noting that the Jewish Friedman had a band called the Texas Jewboys.
"I'm sure it's embarrassing to him, but what I'm suggesting is the people most likely to take umbrage at this are also the people most likely to never think of Kinky as a serious prospect anyway," Buchanan said.

Candidate says comment made at Houston club in 1980 was part of his satirical act

AUSTIN - Kinky Friedman's use of a racial slur in his outrage-humor stage show in 1980 caused a firestorm Thursday in the governor's race as critics said the satirist too frequently engages in racially charged comments.
Friedman stirred a critical examination of his past two weeks ago in Houston by saying the Hurricane Katrina evacuees left in the city were "crackheads and thugs." Later, in San Antonio, he said politicians who pander to minorities are racist.
"I don't eat tamales in the barrio; I don't eat fried chicken in the ghetto; I don't eat bagels with the Jews for breakfast," he said. "That, to me, is true racism."

Can you imagine how a typical politician would have handled it? He would have issued groveling apologies and immediately scheduled a photo op at a rehab clinic. The usual interest groups would have issued tut-tutty press releases, and we'd be off to the dismal races. Kinky Friedman reminds us that to err is human and to laugh at oneself can be a sign of grace.

From the polls -

I love Kinky and would vote for him if I resided in Texas. He claims Texas ought to be #1 in something other than exceutions, toll roads, and property taxes. On the death penalty, he says "When was the last time we executed a rich person"? On the illegal immigration issue, he'd hire 5 Mexican Generals, divide the TexMex border into 5 zones, give each General a $1 Million trust and subtract $5K for each illegal that gets across. Don't know the details on this and have read varying stories on him implementing such a plan.
