Politico: "Racist To Eat Fried Chicken In Ghetto"

Sun Sep 24, 2006 6:35 am

This thread is about Kinky Friedman. Novelist/songwriter/politician/former columnist for Texas Monthly is running for Governor of Texas. He seems to be too racy for the establishment.

Rivals seize upon 26-year-old joke

By CHRISTY HOPPE / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – A crass joke using the n-word that Kinky Friedman told 26 years ago has prompted his opponents to call for an apology – a move Mr. Friedman dismissed as gamesmanship.

Mr. Friedman said those who are dredging up old quotes and jokes are busy trying to show how politically correct they are so no one will ask them why they haven't achieved improvements in education or immigration reform.

Another racially charged Friedman remark emerges

Another racially charged remark by independent governor candidate Kinky Friedman emerged Thursday, this time in an audio clip of a 1980 Houston nightclub performance in which he used a racial slur.

Friedman, now 61, was making fun of bigots in a comedy routine, said his spokeswoman, Laura Stromberg. She said Friedman has tried to expose and lampoon racism.

"While Rick Perry was cheerleading in college and Chris Bell was being potty trained, Kinky Friedman was picketing segregated restaurants in Austin to integrate them," Friedman's campaign said in a prepared statement. His campaign said Friedman is a threat to the two-party system, so his opponents are digging through fictional books, comedy shows and song lyrics to try to paint him as a racist.

The Friedman campaign statement said those offended by his Houston nightclub statement are taking "completely out of context a controversial word that Kinky was using in a 1980 stand-up performance to lampoon racists. Kinky was on stage exposing bigotry through comedy and satire."

Kinky says comments are satire, not racism

University of Texas at Austin political science Professor Bruce Buchanan said the comments are "consistent with his general irreverence," noting that the Jewish Friedman had a band called the Texas Jewboys.

"I'm sure it's embarrassing to him, but what I'm suggesting is the people most likely to take umbrage at this are also the people most likely to never think of Kinky as a serious prospect anyway," Buchanan said.

AUSTIN - Kinky Friedman's use of a racial slur in his outrage-humor stage show in 1980 caused a firestorm Thursday in the governor's race as critics said the satirist too frequently engages in racially charged comments.

Friedman stirred a critical examination of his past two weeks ago in Houston by saying the Hurricane Katrina evacuees left in the city were "crackheads and thugs." Later, in San Antonio, he said politicians who pander to minorities are racist.

"I don't eat tamales in the barrio; I don't eat fried chicken in the ghetto; I don't eat bagels with the Jews for breakfast," he said. "That, to me, is true racism."

Unrelated Editorial also from Dallas Morning sNews - re: Kinky Friedman's response to being photographed violating the state's open container law – a beer riding in a car as grand marshal of a St. Patrick's Day parade

Can you imagine how a typical politician would have handled it? He would have issued groveling apologies and immediately scheduled a photo op at a rehab clinic. The usual interest groups would have issued tut-tutty press releases, and we'd be off to the dismal races. Kinky Friedman reminds us that to err is human and to laugh at oneself can be a sign of grace.

=============

Note - the audio was posted on a Dem website.

From the polls -

Kinky (I) 23%
Chris Bell (D) 23%
Carol Keeton "Grandma" Strayhorn-Landrover (I) 15% (she's had like 5 last names)
Incumbent Rick Perry 35%
other/not sure/don't know/W 4%

I love Kinky and would vote for him if I resided in Texas. He claims Texas ought to be #1 in something other than exceutions, toll roads, and property taxes. On the death penalty, he says "When was the last time we executed a rich person"? On the illegal immigration issue, he'd hire 5 Mexican Generals, divide the TexMex border into 5 zones, give each General a $1 Million trust and subtract $5K for each illegal that gets across. Don't know the details on this and have read varying stories on him implementing such a plan.

Something from 26 years ago, get over it. Guy does seem to provide a spark to the campaign, from the usual two party name calling.

This last remark, whether or not he may be accurate, seems consistent with the other things he is reported to have said. That 2nd remark is strange - why would name his band that? And if you have used the n-word, issue a tactful apology and move along. Apologies, contrary to how some people think, do wonders for others. The cowboy in the White House at least hasn't shot from the hip like this (at least, not lately, from what I've heard).

I'm not surprised to read of that off-the-wall plan for immigration control, with off-the-wall songs like "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore" with his band. Is the governors seat the road to power for wrestlers, actors and now crazed musicians? I did enjoy reading this about him, though:

All that said, he looks to make a strong run. Personally, I'm totally fed up with the 2-party system. I'd almost vote for the guy based just on that. I love the idea of having a candidate in there with nothing to lose because that keeps the other ones on their toes and forces them to be (as best as can be, perhaps) honest.

I once farted in church back in the 1960s - does that mean I can't be elected Pope?

Oh wait . . . I'm not catholic . . . moot point afterall.

Apparently the guy isn't "toooo" bad if someone has to reach twenty plus years back to find an iota of questionable remarks to attempt their mud slinging.

Hell, Bill Clinton had a beard and shoulder length hair once (but he didn't inhale  wink  wink  wink  ). . . stop the frackin' presses. Holy smokes, George Bush drank too much and had an affinity for a little nose candy I'm told . . . hold the frackin' phone!!!

Geez . . .

 laughing  this guy's a character.

Well, he also was under fire for something he said six years ago. He said "Sexual predators should be thrown in prison and forced to listen to a Negro talking to himself."

Also he was under fire for referring to Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Texas as "crackheads and thugs." It was said that some black politicans from Houston took that remark as a slap at black victims of the storm.

I'm reading this from my phone, so I don't have a link to the article, sorrry.

Not that I'm saying this changes anything, just wanted to add a couple more recent remarks. I don't know the context he said these things in as well.

Besides the few things he shouldn't have said, he sounds like a fresh face to politics. Then again, I'm not from Texas so I'm not really the best judge of him.  Smile

You bet!

He's gaining traction with a lot of the middle ground Republicans and Democrats....eating Perry's base away. I hope he doesn't get too much on the fringes, as his message resonates with a lot of people. He's a breath of fresh air.

Kinky Update:

Perry: 33%
Bell: 22%
Grandma Strayhorn: 15%
Kinky: 19%

the other 11% is don't know/unsure/other/margin

More about names:

It's actually Rick "Adios, MoFo" Perry - what he said to a reporter last year, refusing to answer questions about legislation.

That's almost as silly

Landrover is Kinky's moniker for Carole Keeton Grandma.

She tried to get Grandma on the ballot. The courts said NO, it is a campaign slogan. They also said Richard Freidman can use Kinky because it's a given nickname he has used since his UT days in the 60's.

Kinky Friedman: A comic who seems to believe his own press. His candidacy should be taken as a joke, in my view, and nothing more.

Who is Grandma Strayhorn? She seems to be popular enough to be a player in the race.

BTW, go Perry!  Wink
