Sun Sep 24, 2006 10:59 am

Has the topic states as anyone seen this movie yet, as it was released on Friday? If so, is it worth my time and money? Comments please.

Got a thumbs down from Roeper today on Ebert&Roeper...
Said it was loaded with cliches...and story could have been so much better..
The two clips they showed had, IMHO, WAY too much CGI that looked SO fake!

I too was thinking about it. Was it the Red Barron they show being shot down in the trailer??

For some reason all the fokkers are red except the bad guy who flies a black one.

I saw it today. I thought it was pretty good. Special effects were petty good. You could tell it was computer generated, but you can with most CG stuff anyway. I think it's worth your while to go see. I never worry about what the "critics" think anyway.

No, I don't think so. Could be wrong though. They have a lot of red painted Fokkers. The well known German pilot in the film is known as the "Black Falcon", not 100% sure if he's supposed to kind of take the place of the "Red Baron". There was another well known German pilot shot down about midway through the movie; they say his name, but I don't remember it off the top of my head.

I see. Thanks for the info. I asked coz I might not watch it if I learn historic facts being wrongly depicted. The Red Barron's kill was probably not even claimed, its not really known what happened.

Thanks for the reviews. Not so worry about technical stuff, just looking for a good story.

I haven't seen it, but I agree that the CGI effects are a turn-off.

If you want to see how to film a WWI fighter pilot move, rent "The Blue Max", George Peppard,

Plus you get to see Ursula Andress's nipple.

Well, the characters in the movie are the real "Flyboys". At the end of the film, they tell you what happened to those that made it through the war.
I don't know enough about World War One to know how factually accurate or inaccurate the movie was. At beginning, the captions do say "Inspired by a true story", not "Based on a true story", so that implies there is some difference there. If you want to go see the movie and then come back and discuss what was accurate and what wasn't, I'm all for that. But don't refuse to go see the movie simply because you're worried about factual inaccuracies. No one on this site would ever go see an aviation movie if that was the case, lol.

At the very least though, it is an entertaining movie. A decent way to spend two hours. From that standpoint, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Yeah but the thing is, most aviation related movies have A LOT of things in common. So in all cases its possible to know what will happen.

Well that kinda was one of my points so I guess I will be seeing it. I just asked because not being very familiar with WWI events myself, it would be a tragedy to see things depicted in a movie and think of them as being accurate when they are not. Like one can find many incorrect beliefs among people because: That movie depicted so. Though I'm a documentary guy, its not like I hate such movies but I think most of them could have been more accurate at the risk of story line etc.
Thanks for the post I guess what I might do is see the movie and then read about it. For some reason I read a lot of WWII stuff and see a lot of the documentaries but I haven't seen many motion pictures because most of them are simply not accurate for the sake of a lot of things. This might give me something to it follow up by learning more about WWI. There really aren't many WWI related movies etc out there.
