I Got An Interview With Best Buy...

Mon Sep 25, 2006 3:47 pm

I got an interview a week from today (9/25), any a.nutters who work/have worked for them? Any pointers? Kind of excited about this as I would love to work in an electronics store like Best Buy. What should I expect for pay?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Welcome to retail.

I applied for a job in a record store in high school (Sam Goody) because liked music. Prepare to have your eyes opened.

I'd also like to add that BB sells junk electronics (with the exception of a few nice TV sets). Having said all this it's a job. You appear to be a high school student like I was and it's better than not having any income.

ah yes....Best Buy....on one side....home of the "we put all kinds of policies in real big print on the wall to please the consumer but of course we generally ignore them when it comes time to enforcing them"

on the other side...i have been going to the same two or three stores for the past couple of years and have seen the same employees basically time after time meaning something is going on there where they are keeping these employees happy.

Don't get into sales, in my advice, unless you can sell ice to an eskimo (or AncFlyer). You have to be that good most of the time to sell extended warranties and such which is what most companies really care about and where they make alot of money.
Benefits of best buy are you get to buy anything AT COST. Which is a huge discount and not to be overlooked, it may be worth it to hold a job here and put up with customers and their BS just for this benefit if you like what they sell.

I hate working in retail, you really meet some of the worlds stupidest people there. I am doing everything I can to get completely out of it, which is amazingly hard to do.

Always remember the "we care about you as employees and people" rhetoric is just that -- rhetoric -- and most managers at bigger organizations will make big pushes to "be nice to the proletariat" right around critical points in the year--ones where they get big bonuses for increasing management--line-level rapport.

retail sucks, bottom line. The companies make no money on most of the products and as a result have you push warranties that are worthless as well as other stuff that no one needs to make money

I made 49,900$ as a manager plus a 15% monthly, quarterly and years end performance bonus. I now make 22.75/hr plus magnolia bonus and F/T store bonus get a company van, laptop, nextel phone, and gas card.

Bestbuy is non-commision and does not force or penalize employees that cannot sell a PRP/PSP. A good salesman will have sold it already to the customers who wishe to purchase it and see its use and guarantee. Services are 100% profit but their are many that do not know how to install a Sony BRAVIA XBR LCD or repair if it breaks.

Clearly you DO NOT know what the cost of most items are that are sold in the electronic industry. The markup is general high on most Appliances, Car-audio, Home Theater, and Accessories. Like all we lose money or make little on wireless, media, and computers. Trust me Bestbuy makes money and lots of it... Read our FY '06 Annual Report.

Online? Ok... Come on the prices online are lower due to the website is betting you will buy a lens and other items to make up for the lose on the camera. You also have to look at insurance/shipping and what they charge for that. Bestbuy will price match 100% plus the cost of shipping and insurance.

As FXramper stated I have been both a Media and Merchandising manager for Bestbuy. As many have said working in retail can be *hitty and sometimes is when you work for a poor company or bad environment. I have been with Bestbuy for 4yrs and have nothing but good things to say about the company. It does help that I work in the #4 ranked store in the state of Texas, and top 50 in company. (stores are ranked on volume/margin/sales) but for the most the company takes care of there employees and the turn over rate has become quite low in the last few years.

If your looking to get a job there to get a discount that is cool, its well worth it and you can save yourself alot of money and buy nice things. If you are looking at F/T and get benefits they are worth it to... mainly the employee stock purchase program and the 401K.  Smile

As far as your interview goes... You need to be outgoing like a SWA employee. They want ppl that want to have fun at work and have ideas and want to succeed. The biggest thing they harp on is attendance and being prompt to work. They will want to most like know why you want to work for them and how you can make the company better. I know its alot harder from when i was hired to get on but once your there it's fun.

Wishing you the best on your interview,

AFP, do you have any concept of the scope of your statement? You can, under no circumstances, generalize such a diverse industry. Retail includes an incredibly broad range of products and services.

If "retail" could be even remotely described by a single term, then by the same logic, the products and services provided by the industry must also be synonomous. This is very clearly not the case.

"Retail", as you refer to it, cannot be defined as competent or otherwise. Had you narrowed your scope to mass-market electronics retailers, for example, you could then proceed to assign halfway accurate characterizations to that segment of the industry.

The same applies to your statement about "products". Products are even more diverse than retailers. Do you honestly believe that most products are sold at the same margins? That's exactly what you communicated in your post, and I can tell you, you're 100% incorrect.

Also incorrect is your generalization on product warranties. All warranties are not the same, and retailers that offer warranties are not necessarily offering them because of insufficient margins on product.

Being incorrect isn't a bad thing. Presenting incorrect statements as fact, however, is a very bad and very foolish thing. Please think twice before making another post like that.

Just going to chip in because I worked at BestBuy for 2 months back in 2003, but have switched to CircuitCity (I have worked there since Sept. 2003) Personally I feel that the attitude in CircuitCity is alot better than in BB as far as management and the attitude. (However this probably has alot to do with location, District Managers and your VP region)

$7.25 is a bit low for sales floor (Computers, TVs, Home Audio etc). I know CircuitCity starts at $9/hr on the salesfloor in Illinois and $8.50 here in Florida. I think Merchandising and CSA start at $7.50 and Warehouse at $8.00 (both in IL). Anyways I started at $9.75/hr in CCity back when I was a junior in High School. Dont know how the raises in BestBuy go, but in CCity they are 2x a year, and the raises are of 0, .25c, .35c or .50c (.35c is the norm for most people).

Also I dont remember BestBuy having a discount at store cost? I know the discount at CCity used to be alot better than it is now on things in the store. Car Audio, Accessories are the most discounted...hell Ive bought stuff 70-80% off the price many times. The employee discounts via the internet is what really rocks. We have around 40-80% off Mitsubishi TVs, Bose systems, Denon, Boston Acoustics, Logitech, Harman Kardon, Kicker, Eclipse etc etc. and of course there is a 25% Verizon Wireless discount on phones and on your monthly bill.

Bestbuy's ESP or (Employee Stock Program) is open to any employee of Bestbuy, Geek Squad or Magnolia... P/T or F/T. The program is based on 6months and the lowest price within that time frame -15% of that purchase price. You can invest up to 20% of your check into the program bi-weekly and the stock is purchased on the 31th of March and the 30th of Sept. After that you are good to sell anytime w/o penalties.

There is no catch, it's called a price guarantee to match all competitors and drive the business by using CAREplus to keep the customer a loyal shopper.

Hope that helps,

Hope you aren't going to become a 'Geek Squad' Gestapo member. My girlfriend's folks bought her a computer there 2 years ago, and she let some fool put all this crap on there that would supposedly help her with her accounting classes. All it ended up doing was crashing her HD and fubar-ing explorer. I didn't know her all that well then, and so she decided to take it to the BB Geekstapo. They told her it would take around 10 Business days and about $150 to fix (guess she had some kind of warranty on it so she got off cheaper). A month later and a bill running above $500 (and considering her folks payed $1000 for the computer), I got to know her a bit better (before we started dating) and told her to tell them to shove their Geek Squad up their asses and go get the computer and walk out. They finally came to some deal and she only had to cough up $100. I have no idea what they thought they did; I still had to reformat her supposedly new hard drive anyway.

No offense, Boeingfever777 and Iowaman, but I think (being very polite) Geek Squad is a bunch of cow manure...

Best Buy does sell some decent products but I stand by my assertion that products leaving BB are of low quality. I have never been to a BB and seen a Pioneer Elite, Hitachi, or B&K product (and would assume, perhaps poorly, that these are offered in Magnolia or niche market BB stores).

Some of the brands you mention turn out nice products (but if you had excluded TVs as I suggested as an exception to the rule in my initial post you'd have notably fewer examples to cite). I am also reluctant to associate quality with brand alone (at least in the world of consumer electronics). Some of the brands you mention (like Monster and Bose) turn out mediocre to good products at prices that are totally inflated the performance offered.

A quick look at your website would reveal that I could just as easily direct you to a $129 6.1 Insignia receiver that boasts "600W" output (while making 1% THD) and being less than 20lb probably weighs less than my CD player. (Ref SKU 7016463)

My opinion has been formed based upon the type of product actively advertised by BB and that which I see actively promoted in stores (typically cheap electronics that look good on paper and are poorly built). Some of these junk products serve their purpose (I for one have an eMachines computer that is fine for my limited home computing needs of storing music/photos and using the internet) - On the other hand, I haven't heard an audio product in a BB that I would hook up in my stereo if it were given to me free of charge (perhaps this is partially due to the fact that BB places no emphaisis on proper equipment setup for demonstration - alternatively it may be due to the fact that a potentially good speaker or two was being driven by an anemic Yamaha receiver).

BB simply doesn't place an emphasis on quality in my experience (as an example, try to find a single disc CD player for sale on the website - I couldn't... but I did find a 5 disc changer for $79). I bought an HDTV years ago and products like Hitachi, Sony XBR, etc were nowhere to be found at BB (but where available at CC which on the whole doesn't differ meaningfully from BB).

Funny how ppl ask for advice on a job and all the people in the world that have had issues with that company come out from under the rocks and bitch and moan about their experiences and negativity.

Quoting GQfluffy (Reply 19):

Doubtful... They would not fix something that was half the cost of an the item. The laptop is most likely DEVO and they would just junkout and replaced for her under the PSP contract if she had it. She did not cause there would be no 100-500$ cost to her like you stated.

Uncalled for but typical of someone that knows someone that has had a bad experience with the company. Also how is this advice for him???

Bestbuy does not make any product you listed but insignia which is a house hold brand all other consumer stores carry to boost margin. So when you say we carry low quality product all we are doing is selling something for the manufacture like a second party vendor. Your like all other customers that think when it breaks its our fault. Guess what we don't make what we sell... Apple, Sony, Toshiba etc. does. Also 90% of America does not have 150,000$ to sinking a Home Theater room or whatever.

It was kind of a blanket statement that was included in a sentence about something else. I was just stating I wasn't trying to knock you two, or Best Buy, but mainly Geek Squad. If you take it as an insult towards you, I do apologize.

Maybe. All I know is this; what her computer went in for, and what the invoice says they fixed, is not what I saw when I got it back. Ok, maybe I haven't gone to "Geek Squad" school, and I'll admit, I'm not a Computer-know-it-all-God like some on this website claim, but when I'm in there asking them questions, and get the deer-in-the-headlights look, needless to say I'm not impressed.

Tell her to stop using IE.

Used IE for 4 years. Switched to Firefox 2 years ago for a couple of months, didn't really like it, and didn't really try Opera or Seamonkey, and have gone back to using IE. I don't have any virus problems....I'll just stay with what I know....

I stand by my assertion that products leaving BB are of low quality.

Quoting BoeingFever777 (Reply 25):
Bestbuy does not make any product you listed but insignia which is a house hold brand all other consumer stores carry to boost margin. So when you say we carry low quality product all we are doing is selling something for the manufacture like a second party vendor.

I never claimed that BB made any of the products listed.

Quoting BoeingFever777 (Reply 25):
Your like all other customers that think when it breaks its our fault. Guess what we don't make what we sell... Apple, Sony, Toshiba etc. does. Also 90% of America does not have 150,000$ to sinking a Home Theater room or whatever.

How do you know that I'm like all other customers who "think when it breaks its (your) fault"? My comments have been confined to (generally) criticizing the level of product quality on offer from BB - Nowhere have I complained about anything that I have made the free will decision to purchase (at BB or otherwise).

I never claimed that BB actually produced any of the products that they sell - I only noted that I believed the products on offer were mostly of quality that I found personally unacceptable.

I have personally used The Geek Squad 3 times over the years and I was so impressed with them I recommended them to 2 friends. They were just as pleased with their service.

Anyway, Iowaman...best of luck at your interview.

Those wages are hurtin! A new hire at Burger King up here makes more than any of those. Is it normal for wages to be that low? Or is it more a unique thing to retail down there?

I work at Best Buy doing home theater sales...it all really depends on your management. My old managers were pricks...my new management is much better and makes life much easier. The only part that annoys me is that even though we are non-comission managers are always on your ass to sell sell sell. Also the holiday season gets quite intense. Get ready to close until past 12 at night and open at 8AM instead of the usual 10AM. Other than that it's not a bad place to work, been there 2 years already.

I'd be curious to know what the going rate is here in New Orleans (not for me personally, just FYI). Post Katrina, local burger-flippers are starting out at $9 or $10/hour with a $500 month bonus.....it's an labor shortage thing down here these days...

Was the punch graphic in response to my statements?

I wouldn't dispute that 90% of America lacks $150k to spend on a Home Theater room (I'd actually probably guess that the number is well over 99%). However, I did not state that this is an appropriate amount for a typical consumer to spend on electronics of this type.

I would charactarize my comments as suggesting that perhaps one should look at a Toyota or Honda (with fundamentally good design offering strong value) rather than a Kia (which may appear to be comprable on paper). BoeingFever seems to be suggesting that because I realize that two sides exist to the value equation that I am automatically advocating that everyone purchase the "Bentley" of electronics. This is not the case.

What I am stating is that BB appears to care little about product performance in 95% of cases and rather diverts focus to "features" and meaningless specs (no, I am not advocating specs as meaningless but check the link below to see how ratings can lack applicability to real life performance). How many BB sales are the result of a proper audition of the equipment on hand? Most systems I see in BB have all 2/5/7 speakers sitting on top of or near the receiver facing forward.

This link covers a few aspects of quality when it comes to this type of equipment. In my experience, BB could care less about any of these (or similar) issues.

Ive never worked in the fast food industry. Even if you say this is true (and I dont know if you are computing those wages on Canadian $ I would work for a little bit less in a BB/CCity than a McDonalds any day.)

So, today was interview day. The lady that interviewed me was operations manager, and said I'll be getting a call later this week for another interview with the General Manager (sounds like I did OK today). She said I would probably start out in Media/Customer Service, and that $7.25 an hour was about right or even a little high (?? I thought it was a little low). Thanks again for all the kind words from everyone. It's nice to see that not everyone in the non-av is always pissed and mean.

Iowaman,

Glad to see your going to your GM 3rd interview... You should ask for more than 7.25 due to the media cap for p/t and o/s is 11.15$/hr. Here is to wishing you the best and a very very merry green friday in retail!

Kris,

In your end of Canada, I find people generally make more due to the cost of living. Here, you won't find any front counter positions at any Burger King paying more than $8.00 CAD to start.

Cost of living out here has always been lower than Toronto. It's not as low as it used to be, but it still hasn't reached Toronto levels. Don't forget no PST and lower Provincial income tax as well. Not to mention Calgary has the second lowest property tax in the country.

They may not penalize them for PSP/PRP but the store I worked at if you weren't able to sell magazine subscriptions you were out. We went through 2 operations managers while I was there because they weren't able to get the highschoolers to sell the magazines. Everytime I go in there I hate being pushed and prodded for a magazine subscription. Honestly I had to lie to the customers to get them to sign up for it so I could go back to work the next day. The store I worked at was a terrible atmosphere. I will never ever go back to working at that or any other Best Buy store. I try as hard as I can to avoid shopping or supporting them in any way now as well.

Magazine subscriptions? At Best Buy? I've been going to Best Buy for however long they've been in business and I can't recall a single instance when I was asked, much less "pushed and prodded" to subscribe to any magazine. The only type of aggressive (for lack of a better word) behavior I have encountered at Best Buy is having the cashier ask if I want to add an extended warranty of some kind to something I have purchased.

Sorry to rain on the parade but I will never set foot in another best buy as long as I live. Bought a computer there a couple years back and was very misled. I was told the coverage program for it would cover everything - and I quote - short of a ballpean hammer being taken to it. Had a problem with it, took it in and, you guessed it - "oh that's a virus problem, that's not covered". I was told by the manager that the salesman shouldn't have told you that everything was covered. I said the problem is what he did say, not what he shouldn't have. Of course that fell on deaf ears.

True, I should have read all the fine print, so I guess I had it coming to me, but comon...........

Then, recently, I had a problem with a DVD player that would not recognize any discs. The estimate was for twice the amount of what the same player costs off the shelf. That did it.  gnasher

But anyway, Iowaman, good luck with the job. Just don't look for me to be a customer at worst buy.  irked

A good salesman will have sold it already to the customers who wishe to purchase it and see its use and guarantee. Services are 100% profit but their are many that do not know how to install a Sony BRAVIA XBR LCD or repair if it breaks.

Well the experience of working and shopping at Best Buy is highly dependent on the attitudes of management. I worked at 2 BB's over a year in PC sales, and can honestly say my first store was awesome. The managers were friendly and open, understood you couldn't always sell at PRP/PSP in every case but worked with us and we managed to meet or exceed our numbers each day. My second store finally drove me out of the company with low pay, aggressive management that took you out back for a "talk" everytime you didn't sell a PSP/PRP (Yeah you try selling it to a college kid with cash who couldn't get approved with financing), highly monitored your sales to determine hours, and a department with no unity that was trying to out-do each other in a desperate competition for limited hours.

After about 3 months at the other store, I quit for twice the pay at the university. So it could be a great job, it could be a terrible job depending on the environment. I still shop there frequently, the financing terms are typically too generous not to.

Thats odd. Curtisman from Fort McMurray was telling me real estate is insanely priced out that way. I guess it doesn't apply to the larger cities. Edmonton and Calgary?

When I worked there we were "giving away" 8 issues of your choice of either Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated or the last month I was there they added Time. Catch was you had give them your credit card and after you forget to cancel after your 8 trial issues they start charging you for a regular subscription.

I believe they have added another magazine to the list. Like somebody mentioned above, the managers could care less about how fast you go thru a transaction. To them it's all about the "extra's" that nobody needs or wants. PRP/PSP's and Magazines.

I worked for Best Buy a few years, both in the stores as a Customer Service Rep (Rep II) and also at their Corporate Office in Richfield, MN. Though BBY never gave me a hard time, BBY does not treat their employees very well. It is extremely cut throat and the company is all about the bottom line. (I'm not saying BBY is the only company like this) Though you may not be punished for not selling a PSP/PRP, Sups and Seniors will treat you poorly and make you feel like crap. Also, BBY likes to mislead people as well. The way they sell their services is quite shady. I personally would never go back, but I did have lots of good times working there and met lots of people! Good luck to you!
