(Note: I really haven't a clue when it comes to some of the terms used in this sporting event, so don't be surprised if some of the words or sentences don't make sense, as I using a dictionary for quite a few words...)
During a loca athletic meeting in Sau Paolo Brazil, umpire Lia Mara Lourenco was speared by a javelin as she went to collect a javelin that had already been thrown. As she went to get it, a flaw in the communication resulted in her being struck in her foot by another javelin which came flying through the air.
She quickly received medical help, and was rushed to hospital, where the javelin was removed without complications.
A similar incident occured not long ago in Norway during an event in Levanger, where a 70 year old umpire was hit in the head, and had to have 30 stitches. Fortunately it ended well.
Yet another incident like this, and a rather well known one occured during the Bislet games in Oslo in 1994. As the finish athlete Juha Laukkanen threw his javelin, norwegian senior umpire Håkon Lund was too busy watching the women running around the track to notice what was about to happen. He was hit in the side of his abdomen (or was it his arm?). He still attempted to mark where the javelin would have landed...
