Losing Weight The Natural Way And Keeping It Off!

Wed Sep 27, 2006 4:00 am

In May 1998 I weighed 225 pounds. After going to the Doctor for a check up I found out that I needed to lose wieght fast for health reasons.
I started a diet and started walking wich slowly turned into running. By August of 1999 I had lost 65 pounds. And I have kept it off!
I NEVER had stomach by-pass surgery and I never used Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, etc. I did it all by myself. Today I weigh 160 pounds, I eat right and I run 6 miles every morning.
Has anyone out there lost weight by just eating right and excercising?

February 2001 I weighed 250 pounds. Just don't ask how, why or what the fuck because trust me, I've paid the price for being like that in more way than one.

Anyway, I did what you did, cut the shit out, exercised and got down to 168lbs were I reside today.

Yayers for me. It funny how I nearly died though.

I need to do the same thing, but its the motivation that Im lacking - I want to do it, I just cant! Ive cut a lot of stuff out of my diet and stablised my weight at just over 210 pounds, but now Im finding it hard to do anything to lose it. I also carry it well so it doesnt look like 210 pounds (I dont look anything like a friend who is at 190 pounds and bigger than me).

Any tips on how you got yourself motivated?

This is like fat fighters!

Well for me, whenever I'd want to eat I'd imagine how'd I'd feel after eating it and picture myself feeling unhappy with myself. I'd then have a drink of water to reduce the hunger pains. In the end I quite liked the pain as I'd know I was doing myself good. No pain no gain. That's probaly messed up but it worked for me!

My main motivation was that I wanted to be what I thought was normal, to blend into the crowd and not stand out at all. Nowadays I don't care about all that, I'm a bit of a part time alcoholic and my take on the world is, screw you. However, I expect this to change at some point.  Smile

So basically, unless you are at a health risk like myself and thingy up there were, don't worry! If you truly wanted to lose the weight you'd find your own motivation. Not being harsh here.

What motivated me was when the Doctor told me to loose the weight or die. Just like that. I was 38 years old at the time.
The first thing I did was CUT OUT ALL fast food. I do not eat fast food at all.
Start by walking 30 min every day for a month. After that run 10 min and jog 5. By the time you know it you will be running for the whole 30 min.
It takes time OK. Don't think you are going to lose the weight in 2 weeks.
It takes time, always remember that and do not give up.

Yea he's better at the motivational stuff than me. I should point out at the time I was 15 too! Get that!

Perseverance is right though, don't give up. You were your target weight once and you can be it again. Just get your new diet and routine set up and try to forget about the fact you are trying to lose weight. Don't weigh yourself either, just live life normally and soon enough, your jeans will be too big for you and well, that's it. You're on the road to success.

Actually this is all that is needed. Keeping a good health and weight, comes from eating correctly and excercising regularly... But it takes will power and discipline to keep and maintain.

I many times shake my head, when I hear about all sorts of diets, because they are all meerly just scratching the surface of the problem.

Yeah, right there with you, man. I've cut out all the super sugary stuff, such as soft drinks and candy bars, since I'm borderline diabetic. The good news on that front is that I've stabilized my sugar level at like 75-80, and it needs to stay below 100. My cholesterol was really high, but I've really reduced the amount of fried foods I eat, and with the help of medication, I'm down to like 175 and holding steady. But, I'm on that medication stuff for life at this point. Lastly, I know that beer really kills me, so I'm trying to switch to red wine (a recent trip to Italy helped that transition!) which is also good for the heart, too.

I'm holding steady at 220, which I don't like at all, and I've got a beer gut, which I hate. I want to lose it, and am trying to do the exercise thing as well as watching what I eat. My problem too is that my thyroid doesn't work at all and I have to take medication for it, and that makes weight management even tougher.

For me, I can't attract the kinds of girls I want to date as long as I have this damn gut. So, that's my biggest motivation.

My way to stay at a healthy weight is to get a job where I do alot of walking, climbing ladders, lifting heavy stuff, ect. Just a little time off your ass a few times a week is all you need. I figured, why not get paid while doing it?  Smile

Good Lord, Alex. If you keep talking like this, with some compassion, I might end up liking you!  Wow!

April 30, 2005, I weighed 338 lbs. On September 9, 2005, I weighed in at 233. In just over four months, I lost 105 pounds, all due to proper exercise and diet. You can do it!

In the end, it all comes down to calories in and calories out. Atkins, Jenny Craig, etc., are all just window dressing that may help an individual psycologically, but bottom line, if you don't burn up in calories as much or more than you put into your body, you will gain, and if you do, you will lose.

Congrats to all of you that have fought and won the battle. Despite knowing what I need to do, I'm in a constant battle to keep my weight down below 190, so you have my utmost respect!

Another thing I forgot to ad: Just this afternoon, I was overcome by a hunger attack. I'm not kidding, I got in my truck, and hauled ass to McDonalds. I bought a double quarter-pounder with cheese, a filet-o-fish sandwich, and a twenty piece McNugget. And you know what I did with all that food? I'm sitting here staring at it. I'm not going to eat it, but I have satisfied my desire. It cost me $15, but I'd rather spend the $15 than try to work in and extra twenty miles of running this week, as I already run three miles, twice a day.

My point, do what you have to do, so long as you're doing it!

BAB, that's great going there. I've done pretty much the same thing. Went out before and bought a case of 24 Kronenbourg but figured I'd already had enough beer for tonight so it's just sat there.

I poured myself a vodka and lemonade instead. Diet sugar free lemonade.  Wink

Yup, I did it a year ago. I started weighing 225lb and am now 190lb. I lost the weight naturally in about 4 months.

Contrary to what you hear, losing weight is quite simple. It's a simple matter of calories in vs. calories out. Out > In, you lose weight. Also, the ease and speed of weight loss is directly proportional to how much weight you have to lose. If you are morbidly obese the pounds fly off rather quickly. If you are mildly overweight the speed of weight loss will be much slower.

Exercise and eating habits go hand in hand when trying to lose weight, but I'd say the more important of the two is the food that you consume. Bust your azz all you want in the gym, but continued scarfing of big macs and donuts every day is an exercise in futility.

Face it, most people know very well that the junk foods they consume aren't good for them. Eating properly is a simple matter of asking yourself before you eat/prepare something "what is this giving me in terms of nutrition?"

Yes.

I lost weight the natural way, diet and exercise.

In mid 2004, I was about 230. I looked in the mirror and I was disgusted with what I saw.

I decided I'd do something to change that. I lost about 30lbs in a few months. Fluctuating between 195-205 for quite sometime. I was happy.

Then Christmas 2005 rolled around. I felt like I could do better. So I made that new years commitment and stuck to it. I started back at the gym in mid-January. I started at 197. I became obsessed. I had such a poor self-image...exercising became my life. By the time mid-March rolled around I was down to 170. I was feeling great. I continued exercising, but backed off a 'lil bit. Now i'm at 158.

Weight is such a huge issue with so many people. And they will say that it does NOT bother them. But they're lying. I said that too, but it really did.

Goals can be achieved by changing your eating habbits and exercise. I try to encourage people to exercise whenvever they can, it can only help.

I'm glad it is easy for all of you.

I've been cutting out soda and fast food for the past 5 years and I still gain weight.

And it is not as simple as calories in and calories out. The second I start lessening my caloric intake my metabolism slows to adjust and I'm not burning as much as I used to, even with exercise.

Its amazing I have been able to keep my weight steady around 160 being 5'7. Its taken a lot of discipline. But what keeps me going is when I see kids who were skinny in high school and middle now fat because it finally caught up with them. I've been dealing with it since birth and they haven't, hence they tend to stay that way.

And in case you were wondering, I lessen my carb intake every couple weeks (I guess the Atkins diet). This seems to balance me out.
Sometimes I go about in pity for myself and all the while a great wind carries me across the sky.

Yep. 9 and a half years ago I was 5'6", 210 pounds and nearly 30% body fat. I lost 50 pounds in 4 months. Now, I am 5'10", 175 and trying to gain weight. Go figure.

Calories in calories out assumes a person HAS excess weight to lose. At 160lb, it doesn't sound like you have much excess weight to begin with, so for you to lose weight it would be more difficult. See my original post where I said the ease and speed of losing weight is directly proportional to how much you have to lose.

Quoting FlyVirgin744 (Reply 21):

Someone would require a more detailed description of your eating habits to provide an explanation of why this is. Soda and fast food are the obvious things to eliminate, but there are many more items that can torpedo your efforts.

Also, some things to think about are:

- How much do you really have to lose to begin with?

- At what frequency do you eat? Your meals/snacks shouldn't be more than 3 hours apart. Frequent eating of the right stuff and in smaller quantities keeps your system working (like throwing a log on the fire every few hours to keep the fire going), whereas less frequent eating in larger quantities means your system slows and goes into conservation mode.

- Do you drink enough water? "Enough" can be determined from the colour of your urine. The optimal is a very pale yellow, bordering on clear.

- Are you familiar with the concept of "re-feeding"? Basically, during a diet your body will eventually slow or stop losing weight as it adapts to your new pattern of eating/exercise. This becomes especially evident if you chart your weight loss in Excel (I recommend doing this as it's pretty fascinating to see the results, and can be a great source of motivation). A way of "kick-starting" the metabolism again is by "re-feeding". A "re-feed" is nothing more than one day (every 1-2 weeks, depending on what stage of diet you're at) of high calorie/high carb intake (pasta, bread, etc ... go nuts ... but not junk/fast food because this is just garbage).

There is more ... much more. But for the average person who wants to lose a bit of weight, the basic concepts are more than enough.
