Wrestling: Do You Believe It Is Real?

Thu Sep 28, 2006 12:05 am

Since there are a few threads going on about wrestling (even though one of them is about a wildlife foundation) I thought I'd check how many a.net wrestling fans believe that what goes on in the WWE ring is authentic, and how many believe it is all rehearsed well in advance.

For me it took a few minutes the first time I ever saw that kind of wrestling before I thought to myself "wait, he isn't actually hitting him at all.."

Of course it is choreographed. You'd have to be stupid not to realize that. But the fighting is very really, and the wrestlers do get injured and banged up pretty badly.

If you look at professional wrestling (anywhere in the world, it isn't just a US thing), it is a soap opera for guys.

Yep. I never really got into it. But I have no problem with people who like it as long as they like it with the knowledge that it's completely pre-planned.

'Real' doesn't apply. Wrestling is 'Pre determined'.

I have some pro wrestling training. When they land, it hurts. When you have a 300 lb man fall on you, it hurts. When you go thru a table, it hurts.

They know how to do it without (hopefully) injuring each other. It doesn't always work out that way, as evidenced just last night by Hardcore Holly on ECW. He went thru a table that opened up a gash on his back they needed 25 staples to close. Nothing fake about that, it just didn't go as planned.

And lately a lot of the wrestlers have been blurring the line, asking for real punches and blows...what they call 'working stiff' (hhehhehhehheh   )

Seriously tho, those guys put themselves thru hell. Most of it is not staged to the last detail, contrary to popular belief. They know the important things they need to do to advance the story and when, they know how it's gonna end...the rest they make up as they go.

You must be a fan then.

It's scripted to a degree. The chair hits are real as are the falls...Hulk Hogan's autobiography (great book) has some chapters that covers whats real and not. His matches were not coreographed, the outcome was known, but everything else was not; they would make it up as they went a long (though they would tell each other "lay off the back submission hold etc" because one of the guys' backs were sore). Some of the guys have a full match that is scripted though. Some of the guys really dont like each other so some of the chops and hits are real.

I saw the pics of that on ecw.com, pretty nasty gash, almost went across his entire back.
As for the rest, it's all been said. Kayfabe, or "keeping people in believe wrestling is real" died in the 90's. These days you see heels and faces travel together on the road even when they have a program going up against each other, which would have been unthinkable in the days of Flair vs Steamboat; you have all the backstage news that portray the wrestlers as actual humans; and of course you have the internet, which played a considerable part in killing off kayfabe.

Yes its real. The moves are done in a way to lessen the pain and not destroy ones body...although enough time in the ring will do that anyway. Wrestlers learn how to land so that the impact is spread out throughout their bodies. Also, as AA mentioned, matches are made up as they go along, but wrestlers will also talk backstage about that they want to do, what they plan on doing etc. They will also "practice" in the ring before the shows as well. The really big matches can be worked on for months in advance. Hogan Vs. Warrior back in the day was practiced for months before their Wrestlemania clash. So yeah wrestling is scripted or pre-determined, but the physicallity of it all is certainly real enough.

Any form of female wrestling is OK in my book, I saw an episode of CSI New York last night that showed some 'lube wrestling' which involved a nice woman in a ring full of foamy water kicking some blokes arse.

Two women in that ring would be great!

As for normal wrestling, I have absolutely no desire to see a bunch of sweaty oiled-up blokes grabbing eachother in a ring.

When I was a kid, it used to be Saturday afternoon wrestling with 'Big Daddy' and 'Giant Haystacks'. It was OK, but I preferred other stuff.
