This Is Better Than Google Earth

Fri Sep 29, 2006 8:10 am

local.live.com

Check it out, you will be trully amazed. Resolution and color are better and you can get a bird eye's view that indicates depths of buildings, just like someone took a picture. Let me know what you think.

Looks very nice, but with the birds eye view you can't pan around very much without clicking to open a new image, which is kind of a pain.

Not very user friendly interface, and the birds eye view, which is simply aerial images from the side instead of straight down, are only available in the biggest cities. Better than GE? It has a ways to go.

The bird's eye view is ... WOW!!!!

You can get bird's eye view from North, South, East, or West. See buildings from all sides instead the horrible squashed view on Google. I'm glad to see Google get some competition.

The problem I see is that the maps are way out dated. How much? The map of my street shows NO HOUSE THERE, and my house was built in 1998!

Time to upgrade some maps...

Jeez... there's no pleasing you guys. I agree, the quality varies greatly depending on location, but in the better covered areas like New York, London, Detroit, Washington, Chicago... you get much more detail and quality than Google.

Also this one is new so in time they will cover more areas, same process Google went through.

My point is their best quality images are better than Google's best quality images.

Well, it sure isn't "live". They should call it local.history.com instead.  Sad

See the way things used to look, last decade maybe.

I looked up my house. Same 15 year old photo that Google Earth and Terraserver uses.

Although Google Earth doesnt have any detail to my area, it sure does keep itself updated. My house that I live in was built 15 years ago, and it is definately not on there.

Not too bad! It does not seem to zoom in as far as Google, but the image does look much clearer and sharper.

Your right. I'm not pleased. And with good reason. These companies, Google, Microsoft, pay millions and then tout their software which is nothing more than Map Point overlaid onto Sat. pics... and the pics are verified AT LEAST 8 years old.

Why spend millions developing these programs, and use SUCH dated data?

8 years?

If your 10 year olds birthday was the day the satellite picture of my land was taken, he/she today, would be at least 18.

If GWB took office the day the satellite pic of my land was taken, he would be out.

If you bought a car the day the pic was taken, and you drove the average mileage per year, that car would have 96,000 miles.

Why then, can't these pictures be updated? At least ONCE?

Yea.. the software is neat.. but if its outdated, its really no good.

I can tell you that since I've been using Google Earth (about September of 2005), Portland (Oregon) has been updated. So it does happen.

I did a Bird's Eye view of my work, and those have been done within the last 2 years. They havn't got to my house yet. The Bird's Eye part owns Google Earth, but the rest of it is old news.

Eh....they still have the old Terminal A at BOS  Wink

Heh, even GE doesn't have the new one yet, but at least the photo is during construction.

The aerial view of my area is from waayyyyy back. Quite a few housing developments have yet to be developed.

I actually didn't find the bird's-eye thing all that great. Oh well.

Birds eye view is different from every angle. There is a mansion that I was looking at, and you can see different stages in its construction, from before the expansion to the finished product....depending on what angle you look at it from! haha..... it is VERY cool though. Much more interesting to look at than google earth's flat pic.

I just installed Google Earth on my computer, and decided to test it out.
First thing I entered in the search area was "Norway". So it zooms in on the globe, the text "The kingdom of Norway" comes up, and the bloody thing zooms in on Sweden.  grumpy

Is Google Earth american by any chance?
