The Division Series Thread

Wed Oct 04, 2006 5:53 am

One game already in the books, with Minnesota falling to the As 3-2. The Cardinals and Padres are scoreless, with Carpenter and Peavy both very sharp so far. Yankees play the Tigers later tonight in the Bronx. And from the Mets camp, El Duque is questionable for Game 1 tomorrow after hurting his calf - things keep sprialing downward for the Mets.

The Twins really needed to get a win out of Santana today. He was fantastic, but Zito was even better. And with some help from Frank Thomas, the As are now in the driver's seat. The Twins need to win tomorrow - winning three straight against the As will be very difficult.

Looks like the Cardinals took care of business today..Couldn't see it but the morning game (yes thats right in the west) was a real pitching duel. Twins 2, A's 1 plus Frank Thomas 2 = 3. Pitching is going to be the key between the A's and Twins.

Cards won it 5-1.

I'm obviously disappointed, but the sports experts did say that if the Padres were gonna have any major difficulty in this series, it would be against Carpenter... At any rate, Wells (postseason experience) will be starting Game 2 against the Card's Weaver (8-14 this season)... I fancy the Padres chances better in that one...

If he's healthy...

As a Dodger fan, I'm torn. On the one hand, I'd like to see the NL west do well, but I don't really want the Blue to have to face the Pads in the NLCS. You've beaten us up too badly this year...

I know I'm looking ahead, but with the Mets' pitching falling apart, I think we've got a pretty good chance there...

Yanks defeat the Tigers 8-4. Jeter adds to his playoff resume by going 5 for 5 with a homer, and Abreu knocks in 4 - what a trade that was.

The Yanks generally don't do well when winning the first game of the Division Series, however, so that's causing me some agita. Also causing me agita is the middle relief, which desperately tried to blow the lead but couldn't. And could Tim McClellan call some balls and strikes without having a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper first?

Verlander vs. Mussina tomorrow.

Seems like a month or so, since the Tigers have won any game, losing now what six or seven in a row. Unless the Tigers win tonight, the Yankees can start planning for the next round.

Dodgers and Mets today (10/4) which means alot of playoff baseball in the big apple.

We've seen other teams win, especially the Angels a couple of years ago, without starting pitching.

The Mets will do OK if the offense steps up and the bullpen does their job.

No score yet, but it's only the bottom of the second.......

Inside the park homerun and now the A's are up 2 games. The big question will they been able to finish off the Twins, or will Minnesota rebound?

I think the Twins will be able to take a game, but they won't be able to get all three - As will win the series.

I've got a stupid gut feeling the Twins will comeback. First, as recent history has proven, if there is any team who can choke on a 2 game lead in a 5 game series, it's the A's. Second, the Twins' offense can't suck this bad for much longer. They have no hits with RISP. They'll figure out a way to start getting runners on base with less than 2 outs instead of relying on the solo home runs. Third, Torii Hunter will get over his "I'm Keith Hernandez" moment in the 7th inning today and have a huge game 3 to spark the momentum needed to win the next 3. I'm not giving up on the Twins yet.

BTW, for those who don't read Bill Simmons regulary, the "I'm Keith Hernandez" moments are those where a superstar really believes the role bestowed upon him and will try to make every single play to the point where making a mistake trying to make the big play kills his team.

Tigers outplay the Yankees today to win 4-3. I hate to say it, but I have a bad feeling with Randy Johnson going into Game 3.

Padres lose game 2 to the Cardinals, 2-0... David Wells did pretty well, but the Padres gave him no run support, no offense to work with.

Now the Padres travel to St. Louis hoping that Chris Young, their ace this year (11-5) will keep them alive...

I have to say, its amazing how this series is ending up. Us Padres fans came in so optomistic, we had played so well near the end, and we are a better team than St. Louis this year... and then we get pummeled the first 2 games...

Albert Pujols is not human. How do miss 3 weeks and still hit .331, 49 HR's and 137 RBI's?? If St Louis pitching can hold up, Pujols will carry this team to the WS. Detroit goes back home with some momentum for what I think is the most exciting Divisional Series, and is it me or do you think that Torii Hunter cant be at fault for his "blunder". Ya he shouldn't of dove but if he comes up with it, hes a hero. Not to mention that ball had some sick spin on it.

I was really shocked that the Twins got swept. I anticipated a close hard fought series. Wasn't to be. Twins had a great season. Wouldn't surprise me that the A's come out as the American League Champions. Amazing what a little timely hitting and decent pitching will do.

I'm in shock as well. The offense just flat out stunk. 1 hit with RISP? That's pathetic. Plus the A's killed us on a few untimely mistakes.

I'm reserving judgement until I see the results of the Tigers/Yank-mees series.

Kind of tough to win ballgames when you don't score. I give Kenny Rogers all the credit in the world for pitching well, but the Yanks should have gotten at least two runs off of him. It's not like they didn't have enough baserunners, but one hit per inning doesn't cut it.

The Yanks can't pitch with the Tigers, so they have to outhit them. If the offense doesn't show up tomorrow, it'll be hockey season a lot earlier than planned.

I'm not optimistic.

A's looked impressive in the sweep. Awesome. I'm glad we finally didn't choke. Bring on Detroit or the NY Skanks, although the Yankees choking this away would be hilarious, what after many talking heads declared them on the cusp of invincibility.

How much I would like to see the Yankees lose, with the history of coming back, until the final out of the third victory for Detroit, there no cause to celebrate.

Well the Padres have taken a lead in a game for the first time in the series so far against the Cardinals. I just hope they can hang on and get a win back on them, to make Game 4 a very interesting one.

I hate to say it, but SD teams always seem to be happy just getting to the playoffs. The first two games seemed like they had no heart, no hustle. After watching the Chargers and the Padres make it to the division playoffs, I would like to not see them not celebrate until after the last game be it the Super Bowl/World Series.

This last game I saw heart and hopefully that will continue.

You know, maybe I'm just way too devout of a fan, but I think if the Padres continue pitching well and get some offense going and focus on ONE GAME AT A TIME... they could pull off the upset over the Cardinals.

I'm going to be very excited watching tomorrow's game in St. Louis... If we can pull off this win, we'd bring the decisive Game 5 to San Diego... I just feel so pumped right now, I feel like this can be achieved!
