OK Guys, What Is This Thing In The Sky?

Wed Oct 04, 2006 5:56 am

Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet have taken this photo of the sky over the city of Stavanger:

But what is it?

Well, apparantly the reason the journalist took the photo of the sky was because there was something there...  Wink

I can see a dust spot for a start Wink

It looks rather like some kind of huge smoke ring. Perhaps it could be evaporating water vapour, sure looks strange!

My Norwegian is slightly limited, to say the least, so would anyone mind giving a rough translation of what the article has to say please? I'm interested to know what caused it.

It is the Norwegian Fire Department that caused this ring of smoke due to some exercise. Not sure which kind of exercise though.

It says "resertifiseringskurs"

Maybe Thom@s can help us out a little here?

I think it means something like this:

Last night all that could be found were really different theories, but now it is clear that the ring was indeed caused by a fire exercise.

To demonstrate how Diesel can explode/burn intensely, they fill up a big "barrel" like object, and ignite it. The explosion/intens fire causes a big diesel ring of smoke to rise up into the sky.

These are apparently not uncommon in the area where it was spotted, so the newspapers reason of questioning what it was must have been to get more hits on their website...

Looks like Mulder and Scully can consider this case closed.
