Friday's Stupid Thread - RJ45 Cable Color

Fri Oct 06, 2006 4:00 pm

So it appears my network cable in Tunis is white. Back in Dublin it was yellow.

My LAN at home has red cables.

What's your network cable color ?

The one I currently have in my bag (but not used as there are pincement powers in the choux) is a blue/marine coloured cable approximately 3 metres long.

I do have a cable, blue one, but that's laying around useless just like JGPH1A.

When I'm home from uni, the cable to the wall socket is red, the one to the switch is light grey, the one from the switch to another wall socket is (probably) blue again and the loooong one from that socket to the DSL router is a darker grey.

Wait, part of the long cable got fried by some plumber, so I had to put in two more sockets and yet another cable which is light grey again.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

At work my RJ45 cables are different colours depending on what they are connected to, and what speed that network segment should be running at.

The fiber cables are all blue.

At home they are mainly grey, but there are a few blue and yellow ones dotted around the place.

It varies based on what I bring home from work. Right now I have a yellow cable since I left my fancy schmancy black one at the client site this week (I'll get it back next week though.)

My house is wired with Cat6 cabling that is grey. The cables from the patch panel to my Cisco switch are blue and so are the patch cables from the wall to the various devices in my office. I also have a couple of wireless acces points that are wired in via blue cables. I have one crossover cable connected to my PIX firewall that is red.

I thought RJ45 was almost always blue. Maybe it is Blue in Aussieland. The office has blue cable everywhere. Thought I may have seen white cable around but it may have been for another purpose. No orhaange or yellow seen around the home or the office.

A grey one from my college's dorm room wall plug to a hub, a purple one from the hub to my roomate's X-Box, a white one from the hub to my computer's surge protector, and a black one from the surge protector to my computer.

Also, a yellow and light blue cable back at my house for my DSL connection.

Okay time to get nerdy now....RJ-45 is the jack...The proper term is called Category 5,5e or 6 cable. As for the colour of mine, well black cable leaves the modem and goes into the router. blue cable goes to my windows box. green cable goes to my linux box. and light blue goes into my mac laptop.

Well here at home we have a blue one from the modem to the WiFi router and a yellow one from the router to the main computer. Everything else is WiFi.

At school its a optics so its a nasty orange color.

ok, I feel like being an A$$ right now...

My RJ45's are all clear, my cat 6 is blue between switches at home.

Fiber has unofficial color codes depending on plenum, outdoor, etc...but this is not always true as some manufactures have decided not to abide by this.

If your fiber is orange more than likely you have a plenum indoor fiber run.

Well, well, well, a nerd thread! It's better than politics, isn't it?

From left to right, the cables on my Cisco 2916M-XL (IOS 11.2(8)SA3 - yeah, it's the 4mb version):

Blue, grey, grey, grey, grey, blue, dark grey, grey, light yellow, deep yellow.

On my roommate's Cisco Catalyst 2901, top to bottom and left to right:

Blue, yellow, grey, grey, blue, grey, blue, light blue, blue, black.

The fiber cables on his FDDI concentrator vary between orange and grey.

This picture is several months out of date but our living room is still at least as bizarre as portrayed therein.

Work: bright blue

Home: the cable going from the modem to the wireless router is light gray, and the one from the router to the desktop is dark blue.

Oh, and the one from the router to my brother's laptop is, umm, invisible.  Silly
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

I don't know what an RJ45 cable is, but if it's the wire that goes into the wall, then at work it's white. I don't have one at home, as I use wireless. For travel I have a windup one that's black and flat.

Oh please - how little the child knows ! As a seasoned road warrior I am equiped with all sorts of clever things, like a windup Ethernet cable and teeny-tiny USB mouse with windup cord (can't use a wireless mouse on planes), purchased in DXB for about 5 bucks. When you get a real job and they send you out travelling (which, if they have any sense, or weak stomachs, they'll do), you'll discover these things  Smile
