My Latest Update From Iraq With More Pictures

Sun Oct 08, 2006 7:11 am

I haven't posted one of these picture-journals in awhile. I try and space these threads apart, simply so I don't start to bore all of you.

Anyhoo, life is going well in Iraq. At the moment I am on one of the "up-swings." Typically life in Iraq can be broken down into four categories:

1.) The Up-Swing:[b] This can be described as any period when things are going well. Usually after I get packages from home, the missions have been going successfully, I've been able to talk to my wife on the phone frequently... basically when I a feel positive about being here.

[b]2.) The Down-Swing:
Just the opposite of the up-swing. The missions have been brutal, I haven't talked to my wife for awhile, the heat is getting to me, and the situation seems bleek.

3.) Sheer Boredom: There are moments when you seriously think time is standing still. Usually this occurs when you are tasked with doing some other sh*tbag's job, because for reason he can't do it today. Usually this might be sitting in a guard tower, or standing at a freakin' gate. I don't smoke. Practically everyone smokes. But when I am in these situations, I have the huge urge to smoke. I think it has to do with just wanting SOMETHING to do.

4.) Sheer Terror: Luckily this is the most rare out of the four categories. But it's definitely the lease enjoyable. And it also typically involves someone trying to kill you. It's an odd sensation... knowing someone is actively attempting to snuff you out.

Yeah so right now I am definitely on the up-swing. I haven't been tasked out across the damn countryside, so that means I've been sleeping in my bed most nights. The missions have been relaxed from the insane tempo we had a month ago. And Atrude777 suggested I get a webcam for my wife and I - which I can't believe I hadn't thought of already. What a kick-ass way to talk to her.

The 2006 election ballots just arrived last week. A ton of us did our civic duty and voted. The insane heat is starting to subside... the other night I actually put on my cold weather pants/shirt. We got a new batch of WO1s and 2nd LTs. I was a little surprised they sent them so late during our deployment. In a way, it totally pisses me off. When I was in college and in the national guard, I BEGGED my unit to send to Iraq. "Sorry Specialist, you're place is in college. It ain't gonna happen." While my unit was sitting in the Kuwaiti desert waiting to push into Iraq... I was sitting in economic classes. But now they'll send anyone who requests it. "Wanna go to Iraq? See strange places? Meet strange people? Live in 150 degree heat and endure hell on earth? Well son, you've come to the right person!". So anyway, I was robbed of my war... now I'm stuck with being part of the clean up. Imagine being the soldier that showed up in Normandy on June 7th. Sure you're one of THEM... but you'll never be able to say you stormed the beaches. Sucks.

Here is the flightline as the sun rises to the east. It's still cold out.

A typical random mortar crater. The insurgents typically lob a few poorly aimed mortars in our direction, and then run. But we've gotten pretty good at immediately triangulating the location of the fire and sending someone to go take them out.

A large explosion on the horizon. Most likely EOD doing their 'thang:

This was me on short final coming in over the river:

I just love this photo. It really makes me pissed that I couldn't be apart of OIF 1. You know a lot of people make fun of the "Mission Accomplished" speech, but they really need to simply shut up. Because what these guys did, what nothing short of amazing. They took a force 1/2 the size of what they were expecting, pushed north to Baghdad in record time, and encountered a TOUGH enemy. They didn't simply accomplish the mission - they kicked the mission's ass!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/68.jpg

Another photo that I really love. It sort of immensity of the situation. Young men and women, who grew up in relative comfort and safety, and brought half-way around the world, thrown in the middle of an alien culture and expected to be protect those who can't protect themselves.

Some tanks guarding the entrance to one of the many allied HQs in Iraq:

Hmm... a good picture of my neck!  Silly I am actually holding the camera. That's my helicopter in the back:

My crew chief took this photo. That's me on the left. Personally I enjoy flying left seat over the right. Although we typically alternate between the two frequently... when I am given I choice I'll take the left side any day.

The outer rims of the cities are usually extremely poor and lack proper plumbing, electricity and basic civil services:

My crew chief manning the M240B:

I really like this photo because it shows all of the equipment I wear. First I have my flight suit. I have two types of flightsuits. One is a single piece jumpsuit that I typically wear on colder days. And the other one is a two piece uniform very similar to my desert combat uniform, which I wear on hotter days because it breaths better. I also wear my desert boots. A good set of gloves (I buy most of my gear from Black Hawk online gear supplier). I have my helmet with the face mask. The mask helps keep sand from getting in my face, nose and mouth. I carry my sidearm in either a shoulder harness or I will wear it strapped to my leg. Depends on my mood. I also wear my flight vest. This has a ton of survival equipment in it. Lastly, when I am flying I have a kneeboard which I keep all of my important papers/mission documents on for easy access. In this photo I am wearing the two piece flight suit

Check out this desert fox. We call him Rommel. (Yeah yeah, I know... we're not very creative)

On days like this, you're so bored, walking into a spinning rotor blade doesn't sound crazy. At least it will give you something to talk about!  no

Check out the MiG29:

Shhhh... don't tell my wife I am looking at this:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/381.jpg

Sure someone you say us soldiers are nothing but Kool-Aid drinkers. You don't know what you're talking about!  Wink

Being bored:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/506.jpg

You know, we land at these refuel points that are sometimes in the middle of nowhere. And these Bedouins walk out of from the desert and try and sell us stuff. Usually it's total junk, but they're nice people and we give them food and water if we have it.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/512.jpg

And Iraqi... dump truck? Wow.

Live rounds, folks. This isn't a joke:

Walking out to the helicopter:

Here's a more random photo. This little boy is leaving the funeral of his father who died in Iraq.

If there is one thing I love about Iraq, it's the sunsets.

The sun sets in the west. And west is were home is.

Some of those photo's are amazing, I hope you stay safe out there. One question though; how come you only cover your face up and not your colleagues? Just curious.

That last photo is actually quite invigorating, at least you have one nice thing out there.

I use to worry about getting in trouble. For awhile the military really cracked down hard on military blogging. So I covered my face and my name. But lately I stopped worrying about it. Practically everyone knows my name now, and prior to deploying I had posted pictures of my face, so really, the cat was out of the bag, wasn't it? So I figure that continuing to "black my face" is really just a waste of my time since I'm not really hiding anything that hasn't been revealed.

The reason why some photos are still "blacked out" is because those were done months ago. I use to black out the face prior to loading it onto Photobucket, so my collection of photos on Photobucket has older blacked-out ones, and newer, unaltered photos.

So yeah... old photos are blacked out, new photos aren't.

I mean if anyone is really interested in what I look like I've posted these in the past,

For some reason I thought you were much older than you are...hadn't looked at your profile, which would have clarified it...but based on your comments, you seem to have a maturity at least 10 yrs older than you are...anyway, GREAT pix, THANKS for job you're doing and keep safe over there!

Excellent work dude - really great. I really do enjoy reading about your life out there. You are doing a top job, and everyone should be thankful that there are guys like you doing the business out there. Thanks.

Did you get to play with the Hind? Thats a D-model isnt it? Presumably the Poles are using it as a support platform for the Hips correct? Amazing bit of kit.

Great photos and great insight into the work you're doing. Tell me, and this may be a stupid question, but when you say 'my helicopter', is it the same helicopter you fly all the time ? Do you have your name painted on the side, like the Navy pilots ? Nice if it is 'yours' - when I was in the SAAF (and this was many years ago now), pilots didn't have a specific aircraft they flew, they tended to take whichever one was tasked.

Oh, and the Mig29 - is that a wreck left over from the Iraqi AF or is it someone's operational aircraft - it's hard to tell, because it seems to have bits of netting over it, and it's at a funny angle.

Stay safe !

Well... cold is roughly 70 degrees at night. Lately the day temperatures have been hovering around 100-110. Only a month ago, the daily temperature was usually around 125-130.

But dude, it IS cold!! It's anywhere between a 30-50 temperature drop! Can you imagine it being 80 degrees during the day, and 30 at night?  cold  When I am on duty at night, I typically wear my winter hat and gloves.

Yeah I crawled up and down that thing. It's a beast of a helicopter. However, I think it's highly overrated. ANC, remember back in the good ole days of the Cold War... Soviet tanks were feared? And remember how the Gulf War showed us the truth? It's the same way with the Hind. The West grossly over-estimated it's abilities.

She's very fast on a straight dash... but it really doesn't have the agility I would expect from an attack helicopter. The power lag was significant and the xmission energy loss would be totally unacceptable in western helicopters. Their IR signature is totally unacceptable and offers very little protection against IR homing threats. It has some heavy armor for a helicopter... but at what point do you go overboard? One of my biggest complaints was the cockpit visibility, especially the front seat. Having sat in an Apache, and then a Hind, I was shocked. The armored tub the pilots sit in extends too high and interferes with seeing anything beyond the 4 and 8 o'clock positions. The window structural beams were fat, and created sizable blind spots... and when IR missiles are such a threat to this helicopter, the last thing I'd want is restricted vis.

The flight control system is antiquated. When you're handling such a beast, the last thing you want to do is waste energy manipulating the controls. The UH-60 and the AH-64 have SAS, FPS, Trim, and Boost to all aid the pilot in reducing the workload. When you're heavy with troops, or lining up on a gun run, you can't be focusing on the controls - that needs to come naturally.

Also the avionics and weapons packages were subpar. I was very disappointed to say the least. HOWEVER, I was VERY impressed by the Pols. Outstanding pilots and they really knew how to sap every bit of performance out of that turkey. I would trust them with my life any day. They'd be even better if we equipped them with the best damn helicopters in the world!  Wink

Quoting JGPH1A (Reply 16):

No I do not have my own helicopter. My unit has a set number of helicopters and I fly all of them. However, CREW CHIEFS have their own helicopters, and they paint their names on them. They're responsible for that helicopter and making sure it is operationally ready.

I remember when I use to be a c.chief, I had my own bird. It's a big thing when you earn that right and it's a source of pride. You compete with your buddies for who has a better helicopter.

Quoting JGPH1A (Reply 16):
Oh, and the Mig29 - is that a wreck left over from the Iraqi AF or is it someone's operational aircraft - it's hard to tell, because it seems to have bits of netting over it, and it's at a funny angle.

That bird amazingly survived the war. However, it's been cannibalized for parts and is certainly not flight worthy. Sadly, it's just rusting in the desert, never to fly again.

Quoting CO7e7 (Reply 17):

Yes, as a pilot you are rated in both seats. The left side is considered the #1 side - the copilot side, and the right side is the #2 side - pilot's side. However, the two sides are virtually the same. The only minor differences are the pilot's side has a different collective control, the CIS panel is assigned to him.

The main reason I like flying left seat is because it has slightly better visibility. The dashboard is a few inches shorter on the left side, and gives a better view out the chin bubble.

Quoting CO7e7 (Reply 17):
Is it Iraqi pilots flying or Americans?

Neither - Polish.

Seriously? I was thinking that when I was done with the 101 - I might try and get myself over to Hood to work with the 1st Cav.

I've spent my entire career around air assault units... I'd like to go see how they operate in a mech unit. The 3rd ID, down at Savannah, would be nice... but it's a tough spot to get.

Well, okay. I was stationed there before you were a brown stain on the matress  silly  wink  in 1977-1979. And my memories of Ft. Hood include old barracks, a crappy trailer park I lived in in Killeen (talk about Armpit of Texas), local cops who thoroughly enjoyed annoying any GI for any reason, "D" Street, Harker Heights, and every imaginable business in business solely to take the GIs money.

Many things at Hood changed. I drove through there in 1999 and noted all the barracks had been pretty much redone, new PX/Commissary, new clubs, etc. It's a HUGE post. You can go for days in the field and not see another unit.

I'm told - by some A-Netters even - that Hood has greatly improved. I'm also told by some A-Netters that Killeen has improved. No evidence to the contrary on that, Killeen still looked like a shit hole when I drive through there in 1999. If I never go back, it'll be too soon.

Your call though Chief. . . do what's best for you, your career and your wife.

I remember hearing an old Iron Curtian story where an Apache and a GDR Hind where on opposite sides of then fence and got themselves in a sort of manuvering game of "Simon Says".....The Hind lost when it crashed.

Great shots UH! Thanks for sharing them! I love the last one. The image of the boy mourning his father is really moving and sad. I can only pray images like that will not be repeated.

A few questions for you if you don't mind.

This is not important, definitely out of sheer curiosity, I was just wondering about the internet connection over there. I know you have access to t.v. so I'd assume one has to do with the other?

Also, looking at your photos made me think about war time photographers. Do you see many? I'm always moved and inspired when I see photos of hope and encouragment especially during times of war.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for everything you guys do, it's appreciated beyond words.

Please stay safe, I'm praying for you guys.

Dave

Savannah, and Hunter AAF, are beautiful places. If you can get the posting, take it. River Street, Tybee Island, as well as a wealth of neat places all up and down the coast make it a prime retirement area for my wife and I. I was there from 1977-79, back when it was the 24th ID. We drove through there a few years ago and while the city has expanded, it has kept a lot of it's charm.

Great pics. A shame about the mig 29. Nice to see some pictures with locales actually smiling and seeming appreciative of you being there. When you say the outlying parts of the city have no water or electricity is it because they are shanty towns or that it just has not been restored yet? Well, the busa is just awaiting your return although it will have to wait until warmer weather up in the Clarksville area as well. Good luck and stay safe.

Great post as usual!

I love the last 2 pictures of the sunsets. Especially the one where the clouds are covering part of the sun, beautiful picture.

I'm happy to hear that you are in an 'up swing' at the moment. Keep it that way!  Wink

And your face mask... it reminds me of a storm trooper from Star Wars.

And a question if I may; do you have much (if any) interaction with the British forces out there?

Keep up the good work and stay safe dude!!

awesome man, stay safe. enjoy the experience.

your service to the country inspires me. i'm currently in the process of leaving the private sector and pursuing a special agent opportunity with a major federal agency. passed the initial tests and was granted a conditional offer. we've got a major presence in baghdad so seeing your experience gives me context on how my (future) colleagues are trekking it out there as well.

keep them coming.

I always enjoy reading these threads, the pictures speak a million words. Do you find now that the summer has come and gone, that the days are getting cooler or is it sill hot as hell? I must admit, it looks like a interesting place for sure, so far from anything we have over here, its like going back in time. How is the water? Is it potable from taps or is it unsafe? Well I hope this wont be your last thread, it was a real treat to read and view. Thanks again!!!

We have internet access at most major bases/camps/FOBs. Although I'm pretty sure it goes through a proxy server in the US, so sometimes it can be painfully slow.

I have a laptop in my room. But most of the time, like right now, when I am talking to you, I am "on call." When you're on-call you have to spend 24hrs in the a ready room. It's basically a building with a common room, a kitchen, a room with about 10 bunks, a bathroom and a shower, and a small work out area. We live in here for 24 hours waiting to get tasked out on an immediate mission. In many ways, it's kinda like being a fire fighter.

Quoting DavestanKSAN (Reply 31):

Yup. In fact, I've flown a few around Iraq. Sometimes they're military photographers, other times they are civilian reporters. On the Army's website, everyday they post a different photo from one of their photo-journalist. Me and my bird were the featured photo of the day, a few months ago.

Quoting Gilligan (Reply 32):
When you say the outlying parts of the city have no water or electricity is it because they are shanty towns or that it just has not been restored yet?

Well the cities themselves are "modern." They have what one would expect in any city. But when you start going beyond that, things start getting very poor. And it's not because we went in there and blew everything up... it's because there was nothing there in the first place. Slowly things are changing as the rebuilding effort reaches out to these areas and helps them with simple things like getting water purifiers.

But when the insurgents blow up improvements, it's kinda hard to make progress sometimes.

Quoting Oli80 (Reply 33):

I don't interact with British ground troops often. They're mostly down in the southern regions. However I have interacted with British RAF guys and they're top notch. I've flown formation with some Pumas, and the Brits work closely with a lot of American Spec-Ops.

Well today it was like 102 at noon time, but at night it gets down in the high 60s/low 70s.

When I first came here in Feb, it was freakin' cold! And after the cold season was the sand-storm season, then the rain season, then the brutally hot season, and now we're going back to the cold season.

The weather in this country absolutely sucks.

Quoting AC777LR (Reply 40):

Well we drink purified bottle water. We don't drink from the tap. However, when you go out beyond the wire and interact with the local Iraqi people, sometimes they will offer you Chai (it's kinda like tea). And of course they're using their own water... but to refuse an offer is a very big insult to them, so you accept the drink and hope to god you don't die. Some people have gotten sick, I never have. Although I'm sure it's only a matter of time... their water is brown and it smells.

Hey glad your doing ok, with regards to that Mig-29. Couldn't they load it onto a C-5 fly it back to the States, put it back together with some parts from a friendly Eastern European Country and turn it into a true agressor aircraft for Navy and Air Force training?

I could see it flying down in Key West NAS or Fallon NAS training Navy Pilots or Nellis for the Air Force.

Regarding the elections...a lot of speculation the Dems will retake one or both houses. What is the general mood towards Bush and the GOP there?

Wasn't that what you have had JG73 ( http://www.fabulousfulcrums.de/ ) for - and now, after introduction of the Eurofighter, the Poles?
