Something Wrong With My PC

Wed Oct 11, 2006 5:32 am

Hello,

On my computer now, and for the last couple of months, I have not been able to install any games whatsoever. Everytime I try to install one, I get a problem with disc read error, or a problem reading CAB files. I have a Samsung DVD-rw drive, and I think that is the problem. Whatever the problem is, I want it fixed by the time FSX is out. Does anybody know what I can do to fix this problem? Is it my DVD-drive? Do DVD-drives not install CD-rom games? I'd like to know if there is anything I can do before I buy another drive.

Thank you for your time.

Hello.
Firstly, Cd's will install no problem with a DVD drive.
Secondly, Are these new disks, or old ones with possibel scratches.
Thirdly, Is it all Cds or just a few
Fourthly, Check your connections
Fithly, Do you have any other drives that you can test in place of the DVD drive?

Hope this helps.

Kev.

I couldnt install any games at all.

Turned out to be a faulty stick of RAM. Once i replaced it everything works fine.

I've tested the discs on other computers and had no problem. Its 90% of the discs I try to install. This is my only drive, so I'm thinking about getting another one.

Hmmm, how do you know if a stick of RAM is faulty?

The disks worked on all other computers but not on my desktop. I had two sticks of ram and took one out at a time and tested a game. Finally i found one of them was the problem. I then replaced it it seems to be alrite.

The laser could be degraded or the lens could be dusty. In the latter case, it is possible to clean it and thus repair the problem, but you'd need to be very careful.

There are commercial disk cleaning products out there - give one of them a shot. If that doesn't change things, then it sounds like you have a faulty drive

No, it was actually a deliberate decision in this particular case...! Big grin

I honestly don't know how well they work, but there are CD sized discs you can buy that are supposed to gently clean the lens assembly when you insert them in the drive. I'd give one of those a try. If you want to skip that step, then I'd suggest finding a local PC shop and see if they'd be willing to look at your DVR unit, or simply go get a new one.

When you say that your cd drive cant read CAB files, I dont think it is supposed to.

A CAB file is for a PDA (Correct me if im wrong), it should be directly put on the device which reads CAB files

All others no clue

Cheers

.CAB files are Cabinet files that are collections of files used to install a program. During the install process, the install program extracts the files, places them in the appropriate directory and registers them with the operating system (WinXP, etc.).

PC DVD/DC disc drives die all the time, and fast. Have yours replaced. You could also borrow a used CDROM-drive (read-only) or buy a couple for peanuts at any store for testing before you get a new DVD drive. You've likely got 1 one with a cable going nowhere else than your drive (and that big circuit board), so just insert the cables as in the original.
