And in four years, it's Germany who'll claim its fourth title.

Just look at us: we have won the last 6 games in a row, only two of those were friendly matches. And in comparison, England has tied against Macedonia 0:0 and lost against Croatia 0:2, also thanks to Paul Robinson allowing the own goal by Gary Neville.

Quite true. But the point is, with the players they have, they ought to be pretty close. But they aren't. Overpaid, self-obsessed prima-donnas utterly incapable if finding another player five yards away; so petrified of losing that they produce a team that's stultifyingly boring, pathetically negative and looking like they don't give a stuff. Ask them to play a slightly different formation and these multi-millionaire supposedly world-class performers look like they've just been asked to explain the General Theory of Relativity. Put them under any pressue and they resort to lumping the ball sixty yards up the field, irrespective of what the coach (any coach) asks them to do.

See, we disagree

England have better players than Germany, but Germany romped through the World Cup and reached the semi-final - and could have gone further. England were inept throughout and limped out at the quarter-final stage. Germany were greater than the sum of their parts, England are far, far, far less.

I don't think any serious football expert would deny that England have a collection of fine players, but as a team, they're utterly, uselessly shite. When we got to the World Cup, the hope was that they would finally put it together and play as a team. They didn't, they got worse. the defeat to Croatia in itself isn't that appalling, it's a hard place to go, but coming on the back of the dreadful draw with Macedonia, the turgid World Cup display and the fact that they haven't put together a decent display in ages, the conclusion can only be that they aren't a team at all, merely a collection of talented mercenaries.

 checkmark   checkmark   checkmark

100% right there. Its ridiculous to hear how there's this excuse that the team formation was all wrong against Croatia. It really says that these bunch of useless wasters are ridiculously overpaid if they can't cope with a change in formation. I mean good grief it wasn't an earth shattering one. If Terry and Ferdinand are two of the so-called best defenders in the world, switching from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 or whatever shouldn't be THAT hard.

Talking of Ferdinand, I noticed that he's been claiming that the team was put under a weight of too much expectation by everyone prior to the World Cup Finals. Seems his forgetful side has kiced in again, bearing in mind he was the won claiming that the team were putting themselves under pressure becuase they believed they could win, etc....

But money is everything for some of these players - actually wanting to win for your country and pride in the jersey means nothing any more it seems.

England have better players than Germany

Interesting theory that I definitely doubt!

Now: How to prove it? Transfer payments? Forget it, useless, given the financing differences between Premier and Bundesliga. Just because someone was actually stupid enough to pay 27 mn Euro for a guy who was second rate during WC...well fine for him, it doesn't say much about the quality of the player, though!

So how to measure it? Why and exactly by how much is Rooney better than Klose (you don't want to measure by goals, trust me!!).

Why are Terry and Cole better than Metzelder and Mertesacker...or even Friedrich and Friedrich (again, don't go for the goals received...you wouldn't like the outcome Wink)?

Or Lampard and Ballack (if one accepts the fact, that Ballack is a real 6, not as 10...a fact Bayern Munich never seemed to accept)...or Frings? Lahm?

Did you take a look at the average age of the German team...and those young players that are already waiting in the aisles to enter the team? You don't have an advantage there!

Using the CL and UEFA Cup? Forget it, your teams are pretty good there because you do have so many foreign superstar players (does Arsenal ring a bell? Chelsea?) German clubs just cannot afford (and I don't relly see a disadvantage there, but ok, I'll give you that, only: It doesn't prove English players to be better than their German counterparts.

Quoting Banco (Reply 32):

Quoting Andreas (Reply 34):

How do you work that out? England only have a single player over the age of 30, and most of them are mid-twenties or younger. They had the youngest squad in the World Cup. As for your younger players coming through, I should point out that your under 21s were beaten 3-0 on aggregate by....England two days ago. And Rooney, Lennon, Downing and a couple of others are still eligible for that U21 side.

Quoting Andreas (Reply 34):
Now: How to prove it?

You can't "prove" anything one way or the other. I would take it on the opinions of footballing experts the world over, including your very own Franz Beckenbauer. Without exception they all talk about England's talented players, while struggling to understand (well, not all struggling, some of them lambast the tactics, which is fine) how the team can be so poor.

You and me can sit here and say our players are better than yours and vice versa for all eternity, and it'll make no odds. Lampard, Gerrard, Owen and even the much maligned Beckham have all been either winners or runners-up in the European and World players of the year awards in the last few years, which suggests that their peers think they're fairly useful.

Quoting Andreas (Reply 34):
Why and exactly by how much is Rooney better than Klose (you don't want to measure by goals, trust me!!).

Klose's a weird one. He looks decidedly average, but he does keep banging those goals in. Rooney's all about potential really. He burst on the scene in 2004, but since then has been largely injured. He certainly wasn't fit in the World Cup. He's still only a kid.

Quoting Andreas (Reply 34):
Why are Terry and Cole better than Metzelder and Mertesacker...

In the case of Cole, perhaps because all the big clubs across Europe want him? Not exactly ringing proof, but you can't assess such a thing objectively. Terry I would never claim to be anything that special.

Quoting Andreas (Reply 34):
Or Lampard and Ballack

Ballack's a fabulous player. The point here being that with Lampard and Gerrard, England's midfield ought to be one of the most potent about. It isn't, the two of them look like they were only introduced just before kick-off.

As for CL matches, Arsenal are a case apart, entirely foreign. Chelsea's spine is very much English, as is Manchester United's and Liverpool's. The English players are their key players. It's not especially different to Italy in that regard, and they of course, are the World Champions. It's no excuse (for us, I mean) to talk about foreign influence.

I said "no advantage"...that implies no disadvantage either! It just sounded as if you trying to say the English does have much more perspective than the German one...and that is not true! The French have a problem (they have a lot of problems by birth, but in football they have a homemade one), both Germany and England do not have....that is easy to work out!

Quoting Banco (Reply 35):

Lampard, Gerrard, Owen and even the much maligned Beckham have all been either winners or runners-up in the European and World players of the year awards in the last few years, which suggests that their peers think they're fairly useful.

Yes I already gave you that, but it would be dead wrong to conclude that your have "better" players...Chelsea and Arsenal have played matches without any English players at all...or 1 or 2 at most!

And Beckham...well we have a similar case in Germany I took some time to think about: He worked well with ManU, that is, in a certain, rather small perfomance "window", and he got his reputation...he went to Real and thereby left his performance window...and basically ended his career as a top player (same goes for Figo btw). His achievement in merchandising...ok, but that doesn't help English football really!

Quoting Banco (Reply 35):
Klose's a weird one. He looks decidedly average,

Ok, but then I prefer an average-looking forward who keeps scoring like mad to any hipster who doesn't score or even worse, gets sent off on a regular basis.

Quoting Banco (Reply 35):
Chelsea's spine is very much English, as is Manchester United's and Liverpool's

Because they have the money to buy all English top players..and in the case of Liverpool I do have another opinion....the answer is Spanish!

Quoting Banco (Reply 35):
The point here being that with Lampard and Gerrard, England's midfield ought to be one of the most potent about.

Right so....one of the...same here with Ballack and Frings, and it works better and better!! Yesterday evening was so lovely to watch for a tactics afficionado like me: Ballack and Frings just took the steam out of Slovakia, totally and completely...they just positioned themselves in such a way that Slovakia was unable to bring their forwards in a position to score.

They drew the defense away form their goal and made way for our forwards to kick the living you-know-what out of them in the first half.

Oh and btw: For Chrissakes find another goalie...otherwise you'll end up NOT travelling to EC 2008!! But I take you guys figured that one out for yourselves  duck
