The Official 2006 Alcs Thread

Thu Oct 12, 2006 12:27 pm

Well, Detroit is one out away from going up 2-0 against the A's. They head Detroit. The Tigers have had a few opportunities to close the 9th inning. The A's are down by 3 with the bases loaded. Thomas is up. Will Detroit win the pennant?

Beats reading a thread about soccer, though.

Either way, it's better than reading about guys kicking a round ball with their foot.

And I thought that Oakland would take the series in 7 games. However, I think I need to ammend that prediction now, at this point, I wouldn't be suprised if the Tigers swept the series, should be interesting on Friday. It's cold as all hell here in Windsor tonight, and I can see Comerica Park from my window, so I'm assuming that it's just as cold there. Should be two good games, I think I'm going to try and get some scalped tickets for Friday's game.

Interesting, a majority of the respondants were drawn to this thread hoping to talk about booze

If they win the pennant, I might try and get some for the WS.

Being this appears to be the Tigers year, it was nice to have an earlier start today and tomorrow so that kids around the country could see the entire game. When will baseball learn that playoff/world series games should start around 7pm et to allow the young ones to enjoy and develop into fans. I know if I was living on the east coast I wouldn't be staying up to watch a game that started at 8:30pm.

What was he alledged to have said? There's nothing on Fox Sports about it.

Found this on CBS Sportsline:
Oct. 14, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

DETROIT -- Fox baseball broadcaster Steve Lyons has been fired for making a racially insensitive comment directed at colleague Lou Piniella's Hispanic heritage on the air during Game 3 of the American League championship series.

The network confirmed Saturday that Lyons was dismissed after Friday's comments. He has been replaced for the remainder of the series by Los Angeles Angels announcer Jose Mota.

"Steve Lyons has been relieved of his Fox Sports duties for making comments on air that the company found inappropriate," network spokesman Dan Bell said.

If they can fire Lyons, then can't they fire Tim McCarver for being a complete dumbshit in the booth as well?

Can they fire Joe Buck as well? And then can they fire the guy who thought it would be a good idea to have a sound effect for every damn thing that happens in the game? Or better yet, can FOX not show another baseball game, ever?

I'm not a fan of Joe Buck either. And I cold live with baseball not being shown on FOX as well. At least haven't seen that retarded animated baseball thing telling me what a curve ball is...

Oh, don't even get me started on that abomination. They start the games at 8pm, which translates to a first pitch at 8:25, and then add gimmicks to try and make it "kid-friendly"? Give me a break....

Though I dislike John Miller more than pretty much any play-by-play guy out there, I do have to admit that ESPN has a damn good broadcast.

I agree. I understand you may not want prime time games starting at 4pm on the West Coast...but who cares. I kept falling asleep trying to watch the Mets finish the game last night. No way a kid who has to go to school saw anything past the 5th inning...or should have.

I actually like John MIller. I don't like Joe whats his name, but I can tolerate him with Miller. I actually like Steve Phillips broadcasting games. He's a better baseball tonight / broadcaster than he is a GM.  Wink

Interesting - I wouldn't call myself a Joe Morgan fan, but his knowledge of the game is impressive, and far exceeds Miller's, who does nothing but call plays and tell irrelevant stories that Morgan has to force himself to laugh along with. It's painful to watch.

I actually do feel for the west coasters when you have an As/Yankees series or something like that, but this is Mets/Cardinals. Start the games at an appropriate time for the viewers in the two cities where the teams play. And when you say the game's going to start at 8, start the damn game at 8. I wouldn't have that much of a problem with an 8pm start time if I didn't have to wait until 8:30 to see a pitch. FOX has FoxSports networks everywhere - let them carry the crappy pregame thing and switch over once the game starts.

Mr. Morgan only cares about the Yankees and the National League. Miller is not bad.

Solution: put on the mute, as I do when watching Fox or ESPN game coverage.

My beef with Morgan is that all his commentary revolves around "when hewas playing", "how he used to do things" and it gets old. I never noticed Miller's stories. I always liked his voice and enthusiasm. I do agree though, if the game time is 8:05pm, throw the first pitch at 8:0freakin5pm!

Guess what, if the games started at 4pm the west coasters would find a way to be able to watch the game at 4pm. They did it for the World Series, in fact the 5pm start of the 1989 World Series saved thousands of lives when the earthquake struck. Remember when the World Series was day games, and the TV's at school had the games on.

Oh, he has enthusiasm. He's very enthusiastic about getting the chance to hear himself talk.

It does get old, but at least it's relevant to the game.

We just might have to agree to disagree on this one.  Smile
