Australia - Worst Drought Ever

Fri Oct 13, 2006 11:26 am

With Melbourne experiencing temperatures of over 36c(97f) yesterday in the middle of October, water storage for the city is at 45.1% and rapidly declining. Much of the state and Australia is already in the worst drought ever recorded, climate change or just a normal cycle? In any case the situation is dire, everyone is affected. Thoughts?

http://www.theage.com.au/news/nation...want/2006/10/12/1160246263493.html

"Such a long period with no decent rain is unprecedented for Melbourne," said senior climatologist Andrew Watkins from the bureau's National Climate Centre. "The previous record was six years in a row of below average rainfall, from 1979 to 1984. Ten years is really entering unfamiliar territory."

http://www.theage.com.au/news/nation...lems/2006/10/12/1160246263503.html

"FARM production could fall into recession and there are warnings that suicide among farmers could increase as the country faces what might be the worst drought on record."

"Greens spokeswoman Christine Milne said the Government had not recognised climate change as a significant risk when it brought down this year's budget.

"It just demonstrates that the Government still doesn't understand that more intense droughts and forces are a result of climate change," she said.

"They are only going to get worse if the Government does not address the climate change problem."

Indeed it is but it doesn't help when both the state and the federal governments take a long time to realise what is really happening particular people in rural areas. IMO they have taken a long time to respond to this situation.

This article shows the failure of the state governments on the water shortages but the Federal government did release a relief package today to help the farmer is worst affected areas.

This very unseasonal weather for east coast Australia in particular Melbourne. Summer is already HERE. 2 months early
Lets hope there is some decent rainfall and very soon

I found it humorous that up in Queensland the resevoirs to catch and hold rain water were on the backside of the Dividing Range thus putting them into the dry section. Who planned that one?

It was kind of funny to hear everyone complaining about thee drought in Brisbane and Sydney while all it did the entire time I was there was rain, just on the wrong side of the mountains.

In Victoria regardless of location, the lack of rainfall in all areas does not fill up our dams, our main source of water for the city.

Government is being reactive rather the proactive and even then the reaction is taking along time to happen. We hear about how were running out of water every day, yet no one seems willing to commit to anything.

It's 37C here in Sydney CBD at the moment and we are expecting the same tomorrow.

Record temps and crazy weather, it's happening everywhere.

I feel sorry for our drought affected farmers. Our wheat crop is stuffed and it looks like we are actually going to have to import wheat for the first time in a very long time.

Hope you guys get some rainfall soon

If only the government decided to build a new dam for NSW 20yrs or even 10yrs ago when it was the worst drought ever in 96/97 for NSW we might not be shit deep in tough water restrictions and our major dam under 40% ...They um and argh every week over building new dams for the states but so far nothing and by the time they make up their mine they"ll have no water to mix the cement!

They have suggested recyling water from Sewerage,Build DeSalination plant,Using ships running on Solar from Tasmania to ship water across the tasman and drilling into the Warragamba Dam where they found some extra water but so far nothing has happened.'

Oh well just gives the fuel companies a new reason to Jack the prices up 30%....Blame the drought for higher fuel prices!

Build DeSalination plant,

this very costly and not environmentally friendly and maybe the last option available for the government. Its not only up to the government to find solutions but also the citizens to conserve water E.G - rainwater tanks water saving taps and limiting usage where possible

In the news today in Brisbane it mentioned that we were going to go to level 4 restrictions on the 1st November.

Water level is expected to reach 25%.

There was a plan about 20 years ago to build another dam but all the nimbys shot it down. Another attempt by the government this year seems also destined to fail.

Normal cycle. In West Texas, we had a prolonged drought through the last half of the 90's and first half of the 00's but the rainfall has been back above average now for the past two years. Don't worry, it'll turn around and your reservoirs will fill up again.

One does have to be concerned with the possibility of long term affects upon natural cycles from global warming, including very hot or extended dry conditions as we see in Australia, certain areas of the USA, and Western Europe. Yet, we encouage more unsustainable growth, farming in high risk areas, wasteful consumption by consumers which may add to the problems.
Better start praying down under for rain.

All are options. The desal plant has been talked about for the last 12 months, yet they don't appear to have really done anything. Some guy said there is heaps of water in the rock under Sydney and it basically has to be drilled to get out. Apparently cities like New York already use this method, but typically a more environmentally friendly method is being shunned in favour of the governments own agenda.

We are the driest continent on Earth. Water conservation should be drilled into us from an early age, but it's not.

The question is where do we build it?

Where the experts told them to! and where they even have most of the land necessary, legislation in place and an enviromental impact statement done! A place called Welcombe Reef, east of Braidwood, on the upper reaches of the Schoallhaven river.

The very large Welcombe Reef Dam was stage 2 of the Shoallhaven Water Supply scheme. Stage 1 IS ALREADY built! (since the 1970s!!!) This comprises the Tallawarra(sp) Dam on the mid Schoallhaven river, the pipe line & pumps to lift the water up to Bowral, the Wingacarribe Dam and associated pipes & channels to allow the water to reach the Nepean Dam for Wollongong or Warragamba for Sydney.

Not building Welcombe Reef is the most negilient thing (out of many, many choices!) a NSW state government has EVEN done. Historical sidelight: NO state government has even suvived the next election with water restrictions during it last term. So roll on March 07, BUT then when we look at the alternative, we see an hostirical trend being broken!

And yet "Climate Change" (what a stupid American euphemism) is still not really recognised by Johnny Howard and his big business mates. It's all business as "usual" whilst we all wonder whether we'd have to drink saltwater soon.

But the fires lit are more devastating than ever because of the hot, dry weather. It's a tinderbox everywhere!

Still, anyone who lights fires deliberately should have ALL their possessions burnt, that'll teach them a lesson.

And I firmly believe every fire started by cigarettes should have the damage bill sent directly to Big Tobacco - on the principles of product stewardship.

The weather is getting worse in many parts of the world. I know in China there has been major droughts up north. The weather is in for a big change... mainly due to the global warming thats been occuring. Apparently in the north and south pole it's been getting warmer alot, and so we can expect even hotter summers in the years to come.

And the smoke dosn't help things either as it deteriorates the atmosphere, yet they insist on controlled burns. If the f'n hippies didn't insist on the fire trails being closed off to recrational four wheel drives, these fires would be alot easier to contain.

There are a few things that I don't understand. As far as I know some coastal cities from other countries use sea water to flush their toilet, but why not Australian? Why we have to rely from above but not neighbour? oh yea..pipes are costly.
Why do we have to fix a date, say 1 Sep, 1 Nov to implement water restrictions? We know it's going to be dry in late winter, but why wait till spring or summer to implement it?

The political agenda gets in the way. Government isn't willing to fork out to do it, and private industry sees no benefit. The end result is, were all screwed, by both sides of politics as no one can agree on a uniform approach. We need water to live. Both sides of politics along with industry need to get togeather and hammer out a solution as our lives depend on it.

And the smoke dosn't help things either as it deteriorates the atmosphere, yet they insist on controlled burns. If the f'n hippies didn't insist on the fire trails being closed off to recrational four wheel drives, these fires would be alot easier to contain.

Don't agree with you here - I think 4WDs should be banned and only human-powered vehicles should be able to explore the backcountry, ie bicycles and walkers. 4WDs cause a lot of damage to trails and they often go bush bashing too ... and why should a 4WD be able to belch smoke in and tread on our national parks? Let's leave the parks to lower impact forms of recreation, shall we?

That said, it doesn't mean the NPWS should stop maintaining the tracks once they close them off to mobile recreational smog generating devices. Witness the deteroriation of "fire roads" like the Great North Road in Dharug NP, Oaks and Anderson's Fire Trails in the Blue Mtns NP, and the various trails around Lane Cove NP in recent years - there's no way these are 4WD-accessible nowadays.

Tell that to the owners of those 300 homes which were lost here in 2003 during the bush fires because fire trails had grown over and there was only aeiral access.

I'm just back from Ayers Rock. It was raining two days back and I was told that I was lucky to see that as it happens only few times a year. Despite that, it was green all over. Checking again the forecast, it's going to rain a bit more in the nearby days. Weather is just amazing thing, you never know what you'll come across with.
