This stuff is what happens when you recruit criminals and gangster thugs. Amazingly the fight got started by an FIU player though it was Miami players swinging helmets and kicking players in the back.

Wonder what the punishments will be? The Miami player that was swinging his helmet should be gone for the season. Doubt FIU will be on Miami's schedule in the near future.

Each player ejected will be suspended 1 game. That's my best guess.

Too bad ASU doesn't do stuff like this. Smile Must be a southern thing.

ASU players wait until they are off the team to do similar misdeeds. Let see Mitchell Freedman was sentenced to 80 years in prison on Friday for two sexual assaults that occurred in 2003, and another one is awaiting trial for murder..  ashamed

Nothing new, almost 60% of NFL players in the league have criminal records, and about 20% percent have tem by the time they're drafted into the NFL. I wonder what the figure is for these 2 teams are?

Here is my speculation:

I'm guessing that as these are both South Florida teams it's entirely possible that some of these players may have had issues with eachother stemming from Highschool. All you would need is one Miami High and a Coral Gables (my alma matter) player to get something like this going. I would say that yeah they are big boys and they should know better, but the reality is that the FIU program is so young and so immature that it's easily understandable that the lack of dicipline displayed is nothing more then a bunch of frustrated players acting out because they were getting their ass handed to them by a much superior program and people who are in theory getting a better education (at least more expensive).

Go Hurricanes!!

Something is to be said though, considering the U sends more players to the NFL than any other school in the US.

Yes, the UMiami football team has always had its fair share of thugs.

Note, however, that FIU players started the fight, and more FIU (8) players were ejected than Miami (5) players.

Ted Hendricks must have been really great he was listed twice. Wasn't Ray Lewis charged with murder and found not guility? Didn't Warren Sapp has some issues with marijuana, and Kellan Winslow have a drivers license problem with a motorcycle crash, agreed nothing major. Bennie Blades was arrested on a felony warrant in Michigan for being $300,000 behind in child support payments. Just takes a couple to ruin a school or team image.

PS Jim Otto the first OO in your program was a very classly person when he played for the Raiders.

Yes, Strock was the backup extraordinare back in the day. He had a string of wins as a backup in both Miami and Cleveland that built his legend. He was an outstanding QB coming out of the "bullpen", as it were, but was never the same QB once he was annointed "the man". Kind of like the same syndrome that has befell Kelly Holcomb all these years.

Just an update:

Eight Miami players suspended for roles in brawl vs. FIU

Oct. 15, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The fight is over. The fallout is only beginning.

At least eight Miami players were suspended Sunday for their role in a sideline-clearing brawl against Florida International, the latest -- and perhaps worst -- on-field incident to plague the Hurricanes.

Five of those players were ejected, meaning they drew automatic sanctions from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the university. Miami coach Larry Coker punished three others after reviewing tape of the incident, which marred the Hurricanes' 35-0 win Saturday night over their neighboring rival.

"Disgraceful," Coker said.

Coker suspended safeties Anthony Reddick and Brandon Meriweather, along with H-back James Bryant. It was unknown how long any of the suspensions will last.

Reddick swung a helmet during the melee, Meriweather stomped on some FIU players during the fight and Bryant drew his suspension for excessively celebrating his touchdown just before the fracas began.

Perhaps they ought to take away a year of eligibilty of the U-M players for their 'scholarships' or better yet, the NCAA ought to suspend about a dozen scholarships and transfer them to some non-althletes and real students going there for an education, and need the $$$'s and not there to get into the NFL.

Late breaking news from ESPN:

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- After reviewing a sideline-clearing brawl between players from Miami and Florida international, officials from both schools and their conferences on Sunday announced the suspension of 31 players -- 13 from the Hurricanes, and 18 from FIU.

"I don't have many bad days. This is a bad day."
-- Miami coach Larry Coker

Each suspended player must sit out his team's next game for taking part in the ugly melee that marred the team's Saturday matchup. Miami plays at Duke Oct. 21, FIU plays at Alabama Oct. 28.

More sanctions are still possible, officials from both schools said Sunday night.

"These suspensions send a clear and definitive message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated," said Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford.

Does this mean that lowly Duke has a chance against Miami. Nah!

That's what they kept showing on TV, but I'm sure it was both ways.

Anyway, it's disgusting behavior, and if the NCAA will only suspend these players one game, then that is ridiculous. I hope the schools deal with them a little more harsh than that.

As a UM Fan, I think its pretty clear now, that Coker could only win with Butch Davis' players. Its time for him to go.

Also Falcon...OSU doesn't exactly have the cleanest of records as of late (and no, I'm not saying that to justify the return of the Hurrigangsters...they made me sick).

One of the rumors, KROC, is that Butchie could be in the running for the job there. He sure can't coach (or draft) in the pro's. Think the 'Canes would welcome him back?

As for the Buckeyes, no they do not, but they don't have the prison-break record of the Hurricanes over the years. Yes, Miami has send out some fine ambassadors to the game, as has OSU, but if you compare the dark side of both, Miami comes out as Darth Vadar, hand's down, my friend.

My question...if someone comes into your house, and attacks one of your brothers, isn't it logical to defend your house and fight them off? Granted, Meriwhether's actions and Reddick's were a little over the top, but what about the FIU player kicking Peattie in the head? That gets little or no attention.
Juan Uribe, the SS for the White Sox, shot two people over the weekend, yet you still hear more about this fight at the Orange Bowl.
Oh, and from a Hurricane fan, its been clear Coker has needed to go since the 2003 Fiasco Bowl. With a team like that, that game should have never been that close to let a phantom call win for tOSU*. Oh, and leading Rutgers 6-3 at the half was another doozy.
the Peach Bowel was another classic.
as was the UL game.
Coker needs to be shitcanned ASAP.
