I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

I get them, but they go straight into my junk folder now.

They are designed to pump stock, someone is selling high somewhere due to these things.

These are the ones where the sales message is contained within an image file, rather than in plain text?

Very frustrating, but I do find that Mozilla Thuderbird's junk mail feature elarns and handles this stuff pretty well.

I have seen a rise in junk mail recently on Yahoo. These stock emails pop up alot now too. Not all of the emails I recieve have a place ti unsubscribe like they should so I just deal with it.
I wish there was a "do not email" list like the "do not call" list here in America.

Principle is rather simple. Some "investors" supply themselves with a significant couple of pennystocks over a period of some weeks (carefully, so that stock price increases only mildly). Then they generate such a spam mailing, saying: "hey, look, this stock has started to move significantly - might be the next Apple / IBM / Exxon / whatever."

If enough morons catch the hook and buy the stock, it will go further up. Then the "investor" sells his package, making some good money, and the stock price of the (presumably) junk coorperation will soon be again down in the dumps, meaning the morons lost some money.

The trick is: this may even work for you, if you're early enough. Just like in snowball games. If you're an early buyer, and enough people buy after you, you may win some money. Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. But very risky, and with a couple of moral issues attached to it.

Nb: the stock market as a whole does not generate cash. All the money you win, someone else loses, and vice versa. That is why sentences like "a lot of cash was burnt" when a stock comes down are pure bullshit. Nothing was burnt, except some virtual revenue.

No, it cant generate cash, but it can devalue it - thats the problem, and its a very real one. Its very possible for the money coming out of a stock period can be worth less than the money going into it, the buying power is lower, exchange rates are lower.

So its not really a case of 'I lose, someone else wins' all the time, in some cases it can be 'everyone loses'.

Most of the spam I receive come from one of three legitimate ISP's: Comcast, Earthlink, and Hotmail. You'd think they would do more to prevent being spam intermediaries. The shear volume of spam has to be a hell of a drain on their systems.

I have three spam filters. One is at my ISP's server and two are at different levels on my hard drive. I can log in and view blocked emails through firewalls at all three levels. It's a pretty good set-up and it blocks about about 97% of the spam. No legitimate emails have ever been blocked.

Here's a list of the Top Ten spam hosts.

And here's a list of the Top Ten known spammers. The guy in the #10 position looks like a real winner.

What spams do I receive most often? Let me think... Stock pump & dumps. Winning a foreign lottery. Mortgage offers. Penis enlargement. Narcotic pain pills. 419's. Viagra. Lonely local women/men. Work at home. Diet pills. Rolex watches. College diplomas. What else?
