Wussification Of America's Kids - Part II

Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:44 am

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/18/no.tag.ap/index.html

Now a local school is banning tag, touch football, etc during recess because they are afraid someone might get hurt and hold the school responsible.

Quote from article:

Quote:
Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

Morons like that are part of the problem.

Even as the staunchest social liberal on my best day, this makes me want to vommit. The Rule is bad, the rationale is atrocious. If it was genuinely intended to protect the students I ould AMLMOST undrstand, but as it's a mere law suit avoidance technique it's  redflag .

Kids need to get dirty, get hurt, lose a ballgame, endure some namecalling and deal with various other forms of traditional character building and disease resistance building.......

if not then we're going to have a generation of children who won't be able to cope with real life.

Probably the most telling line from the article:

Quote:
Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe

Sorry Gaylene, recess is a time when kids get to be kids, seems someone has lost sight of that.

Unfortunately we've already got it, and those 'children' have become adults intent on passing their lack of self responsibility on to their kids. While the school admin is at fault for bowing to this kind of nonsense, the impetus for this lies in the staggering number of law suits filed against schools on a routine basis. While most are without merit, dealing with them costs time and money, both of which are usually in short supply in any district. When/how did my generation develop the mentality that if my little Johnny gets a scrape on the playground, that's not 'normal', and I deserve compensation?

How did people ever survive to see their 21st birthday when rules like these weren't in place? It's a miracle anyone survived the 1900s. Silly

And let's not forget the good old exposed metal jungle Gyms of the 50's 60's and 70's.

In all reality I think the problem is the continued defiance of Darwinian process.

The problem with this rule is that it spares the weak and moronic from getting picked off via natural selection. A cruel truth but it's the way the world works. Although I realize the stupid outnumber us smart folks soon enough they might realize their power and revolt against us.

On a much less draconian level, stopping these kinds of games prevent kids from discovering their own strengths and weaknesses, and how to cope and compensate. I was a small kid, so I wasn't too hot at games that relied on upper body strength (I HATED dodgeball), but I was wicked fast, and had strong legs, so things like tag and the monkey bars (chicken) was where I got even. I even got a decent reputation at football, once I got the ball it was tough to stop me. Taught me to play to my strengths, a very good life lesson.
