Which Luxury Car Is Your Favorite? (Poll)

Thu Oct 19, 2006 7:38 am

Out of the following, which luxury car is your favorite?

Lexus: LS
BMW: 7 series
Mercedes-Benz: S-class

I personally like the S-class. Sleek, hides all its features nicely when not needed, and great suspension system. Price is the only thing that bothers me on it  Wink.

Audi A8.

I am driving my father's A8 4,2 liter frequently (almost daily) and it is the best car I have ever driven! So much power, so comfortable, so many amenity features... awesome! I can fully understand why my father became a big Audi fan!

Definatley the S-Class, the classiest of the three. Would die to own one of the new ones, those things look amazing both from the outside and the inside.

Mercedes S-Class

But for ultimate passenger comfort: Mercedes Maybach.. doesn't get better than that as a passenger. Period.

And Like Sabena332, I understand why my dad became a huge Mercedes-Benz fan after having owned both an E, and an S-class
That car is also the best car that I have ever driven. Lots of style, lots of power, and I just love the look and size of that car

Favorite by what means? If it is performance, I would take either a BMW M5 or a Mercedes E63 AMG. There is nothing like having a 4000 lb sedan running 12's on the quarter mile. For luxury, I would say a Lexus LS460. Although Lexus lacks quite a bit on the performance side, their quality can't be beat. If it was best bang for the buck, it would be a toss up between an Infiniti M45 and Chrysler 300C SRT-8.

Out of your list of three, I'd have to pick the Lexus purely because of the sound system. That Mark Levinson setup has no rivals!  Smile

Overall though, I'm kind of partial to the new Volvo S80. It looks great, it's understated, it's safe, and the Dolby pro logic stereo is among the best in any car.

I would have to say in all honesty that out of the three listed I wouldn't want any of them.

I had a 2006 Audi A6 4.2 Quattro. I kept the car exactly 6 months. It was the biggest piece of crap I ever owned. The Sunroof broke and got stuck open, Car was in the shop for 3 days. A/C quit working twice, The dealer had the car 2 days the first time and 4 days the second. Driver's side window got stuck down, but at least they fixed that right away. CD player quit working, had to be replaced, another 2 days at the dealer. Then the car started running rough and a sensor had to be replaced, another two days.

I traded it in and bought a Dodge Charger SRT8. I have had a smile on my face since I got it. Awesome car and no problems so far.

Well, sorry, I should have included the Audi A8 and the Volkswagen Phaeton W12. The definition of a luxury car is different from person to person. Some people classify a Cadillac as luxury, but I personally don't.

So, I guess out of the following choices:
Lexus: LS
BMW: 7 series
Mercedes-Benz: S-class
Audi: A8
Volkswagen: W12 Phaeton
Jaguar: XJ

(The point is to look besides Bently and Maybach and ect. because those cars are simply not viable to purchase by any normal person)

Stats:
2 - Lexus: LS
1 - BMW: 7 series
5 - Mercedes-Benz: S-class
2 - Audi: A8
1 - Volkswagen: W12 Phaeton
1 - Jaguar: XJ

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I really don't think it deserves to be. If your run-of-the mill Toyota Camry is a cup of black Folgers coffee and the cars on Kaitak744's list are fine Italian lattes, then the town car is most assuredly some crap from Starbucks. It has pretensions of luxury, but it can't hold up to competition.

It's an old, floppy, nasty, overpriced, and underdesigned American relic with less than desireable finishing quality. I'm sorry, but it deserves the sales numbers it's getting.

No doubt there. I guess like the thread itself, it all comes down to preference. Anyone that knows a thing about cars, knows that a Maserati is fast. I guess I just like the idea of using an E63 as a sleeper car.

Cost no object:
BMW 750iL (E38 chassis)
or
BMW M5 (E39 chassis), but probably too small to be a real luxury car.
or
Audi A8

The latest M-Bs (and BMWs) have lost some of the classic German feel in my opinion. I'm not a big Audi fan but the latest A8 is the only large German sedan that has the same "old-world" character as the last generation.

If I had to assume all financial responsibility for the car I'd want the Lexus LS hands down. I'd miss the extra performance compared to the German machines but performance is a secondary consideration in a car this big anyway.

I grew up with may parents owning multiple E34/E36/E38/E39 BMWs and think these cars are great but apart from the E36 chassis I wouldn't want to deal with all the routine maintenance issues.

You've had bad luck then, because my father owned the E-class for several years, and the s-class for 14 years (which he still has). There has never been anything wrong with it except for minor things like the antenna that got stuck, and a lamp that went dead, etc. We have never experienced that the car wouldn't start, and during the last 3 years, the car has not been inside a garage, but parked outside also during the winter. It still only has little rust which is amazing considering the amount of salt that is spreaded on our roads every winter. That is incredible engineering if you ask me  Wink

They are looking after them for a BMW dealership as an event is being held very close to my parents home. They were looking for somewhere secure to keep them for a few days whilst the event was going on and asked my father if it was ok. As a result my parents get an M6 for a month gratis  biggrin

That is incredible engineering if you ask me

Some people seem to have blind faith in the brand...

Mercs have been built like crap for years now and it is well reported. My father had a 2002 built S500 and after 2yrs the ignition motor went, cost $1500. Then in April 05 that battery started failing for no apparent reason, the Benz dealer couldn't fix it and it was becoming a big hassle. They thought it was a problem with the COMAND system (Navigation, TV , CD player unit) but weren't sure as it was a new thing to them. They were going to have to take the dashboard apart and then put it back together without re-assurance of fixing the problem. With worries about it rattling like buggery and a bill for new brake pads and disc estimated at $12,000 the keys were handed back. This was only after 90,000 miles!

At one stage my father was doing a lot of daytrips to AMS from LHR and was getting up at 3.30am to find the car battery flat. He was jump starting it and driving it to the airport and would come back at 9pm to find it as flat as a pancake so he started taking my little car and showed me how to jump start it off my mother's car and gave me the keys for a few weeks. I was miffed by the end but was fun driving around in it.

He spoke to another chap who he knows that had similar issues with his S Class and work colleague has a new style E Class that is showing similar problems at 1yr of driving.

A few months ago I went into our local MB dealer and took a look around at the new S Class and to be honest it hasn't restored my faith in the brand. I think technologically it is superb but I was looking at some of the switches and giving them a little jiggle about and it felt like something I'd find on a $15,000 Kia  thumbsdown  . Apparently the new CLS is meant to be much better, but time will tell. If it turns out to be decent it could well be on the shopping list next time around. Either way it'll be a while before my father shells out the fat end of £100,000 for a new Mercedes again!

My mother's side of the family seem to have a bit of a fetish with MB's. My grandfather has an old S Class, my uncles have four between them; a CLK55, SL55, E430 estate and a CLK500. The uncles ones are only a year or two old and have no end of problems whereas the old S Class soldiers on happily with no problems One of my uncles appears to have started the ball rolling amongst them and has recently bought an Audi A8, caused a bit of a stir at the last family get together and everyone seemed to really like it.

As for BMWs I don't think they are immune either. One of my friends owns a BMW 740 that is 5yrs old and he has had no end of problems with it. Sounds rather similar to the problems my father experienced on his Mercedes, the latest in a long line of problems has been the radio which broke. Apparently a new radio is $1100 plus installation and this is the last straw for him. He now has a boombox plugged into the cigarette lighter in the back seat and plans to offload the POS to Carmax sometime soon!

My parents have recently started buying Audis and think they seem excellent so far. Seem solidly built and very nicely fitted out, they drive very well too. When my time comes, as things stand, I'll happily take an A8 over an S Class or 7 Series. When paying towards and into six figures for a car you can't have the worries that the bloody starter motor is going to give up on life after a couple of years...
