Campaign Scare Tactics Stoop To A New Low

Mon Oct 23, 2006 11:15 am

Just saw an article regarding a new GOP ad, which is a blatantly disgusting scare tactic. The commercial shows pictures of Bin Laden et al, and quotes them saying that they plan to destroy America in various ways. It all ends, of course, saying that these are the stakes on which we should vote.

I honestly cannot believe that people take this seriously anymore, this ridiculous scare tactic that implies that we won't be safe unless the GOP is in power. LBJ ran a similar ad during his campaign against Goldwater, sadly people bought it. I just hope that voters use their heads, and not let these ridiculous scare tactics keep them voting for an agenda that will bring no change in any policy.

This election has turned into a three-ring circus.

Both parties throw equal amounts of mud, and are just as dirty.

I love my DVR. Unless I'm watching a live sports event, I tune all of the ads out.

Sadly this is what politics have come to today. It is nothing but a huge game of bullshit. Politicians do not care one bit about you, me, society, or even this country. All they care about is getting a name out there and making a buck or two. This ladies and gentleman is why you will find people hesitating to vote. Because politicians are full of shit, stand for nothing, and represent no one....except those with deep pockets of course. Republicans. Democrats. It all makes me sick really. Rant over.

It matters not which side of the aisle on which you sit - both parties are mudslinging fear mongering finger pointing self centered arrogant assmonkeys generally.

The Republicans have shitty plans and the democrats make them shittier. Partisan politics is the name of the game, it's all about the party, and the country and the constituents be damned . . . .

It needs to change.

I disagree. We assume that politics shouldnt be this way, but this is the way it has always and will always be.

Lets take a look at one definition of politician:

2. One who seeks personal or partisan gain, often by scheming and maneuvering: “Mothers may still want their favorite sons to grow up to be President, but... they do not want them to become politicians in the process” (John F. Kennedy).

Sounds like they are doing exactly what they are suppossed to do.

If we simply accept the fact of what they are, then we can move on to deal with what they do. This is why we usually only oppose what the opposite party is doing, not what our party is doing.

Absolutely not true. Look back even twenty years ago. Sure there was partisanship in the Congress and Senate . . . naturally. It's the degree to which the parties take it these days that is raping this country.

They have, my friend, lost track of what is good for this country. Lost track of the entire reason they are in DC in the first place.

I do NOT accept the fact that our elected officials get nothing done. The highlight of the Republican agenda in the last 18 months was a failed attempt - again - at banning Flag Burning. (I support that by the by, but that's another thread).

Don't you think there's just couple more realllllllly serious matters on the table that ought to be dealt with at the moment?

C'mon now, when was the last time you saw a Democrat ad implying that a Republican vote means more terrorism.

It has only been like this since the mid-90's, and got 100x worse after the 2000 election. It should change; it's time to clean house in Congress and start voting for third parties. Everyone says that it's a wasted vote, but that attitude will only preserve the status quo.

There's no sense of responsibility or accountability right now. The Congress lets government spending balloon, while slashing taxes at the same time. This isn't an ideological argument; deficit-spending is not a sustainable solution. We need to make a simple choice: either we want more government services, and will pay for them with higher taxes, or we want lower taxes and less government services. You can't have it both ways. This isn't a liberal/conservative issue, it's common sense!

No, however it has become more apparent since I moved to the UK several weeks ago for a year. Watching it happen in the US was frustrating, but seeing this stuff from abroad is just embarrassing.

THIS election? Since when have elections not been three-ring circuses from day one? I certainly can't remember.

Certainly there are, but when did we congratulate politicians for actively handling any issue really well? I would say that since time immemorial, they have all attempted to pass the buck.

Government and common sense? That is asking for a little too much.

I don't know about that...I seem to remember a change in every single person's heart late in 2001. It's a shame that it took a disaster to bring people of this country together...even if it was short-lived.

You know, Sean Connery once said a line in a very good movie that could have a bit more meaning...

A little revolution now and then is a healthy thing...don't you think?

Dude, that isn't as low as it gets. Out here, we had a campaign staffer send a bunch of letters to hispanic voters saying that immigrants who were caught voting would be deported.

The part about "by the people and for the people" seems to have been forgotten these days...
