My New IPod's Being Retarted

Wed Oct 25, 2006 7:02 am

So I just bought an iPod. It was working fine and what not, like I could turn it on and screw around on it, but now I just downloaded a software update, and it wount turn on, and when you hit the on button, a picture of an adapter hooked up to the USB cord going into an outlet comes up. I don't have this adapter, and the damn thing wont turn on, and the computer doesn't recognize that its connected to the iPod. Everything worked fine until the software update. ANybody know what my problem is?

Just off the top of my head... sounds like the kind of indicator I might design for a low battery.

Bingo!

Here's the solution: Charge the iPod.

I already charged it, and the adapter its showing didn't come with the iPod. It wont even go on when connected to the computer.

try holding down Menu and Select. Eventually you should see an Apple logo on the screen. The iPod will reboot and you should be good to go. Otherwise, go out and get yourself the Outlet USB charger. I've only ever seen that icon appear when I'm out of juice.

My I-Pod is always unresponsive while hooked up to the computer.

Just leave it to charge for a while... it won't update if it doesnt have battery so leave it hooked up to the USB port and try again after half an hour.

Come on, don't be mean...!  mischievous

I'd try re-applying the iPod update. If it doesn't show up in iTunes, have it connected to USB for a while (to make sure it has at least minimal charge), then if it still doesn't show up press and hold Menu and the center button at the same time until it resets.

It should work after that.

If it still doesn't, the battery might not have enough charge yet and you might want to wait for another while.

I never doubted you for a second...!

Another thing: Never just disconnect the iPod as long as it's still displaying the "Don't disconnect!" Warning - it knows what it's talking about!

Although iTunes 7 is now a bit confusing. After update, iTunes will display 'OK to Disconnect', but the iPod still displays 'Do Not Disconnect'.

As has been advised, leave it on charge for a while and then come back to it, when I added the software update I had a similar problem but it seemed to sort itself out.

Oh, that's indeed wrong and should be fixed. I haven't made an update through iTunes yet, so I haven't seen that message so far.

When you update an iPod with a new software image you must connect it to a power supply to finish the work. Just plugging it back into the USB connecter doesn't do the deed for some reason. In iTunes 7.x that problem goes away and you can update your iPod directly from iTunes without having to put it on a separate charger.

It's time for you to go drop $35 on a charger down at Wal-Mart or Target.

I had that problem with my old 20GB iPod but it went away with an update. I now have the 60GB video iPod and once it is done synching with iTunes it will display Ok to Disconnect in iTunes and go back to the base display on the iPod but continue to charge,

This happened to a friend of mine, he called the Apple Store in the city, and they gave a bunch of what he called "random" combinations that would reset the system. One of them finally worked. So, to sum it up, I'd call Mac support.

Alright, so I bought the adapter ($40), and the damn thing still wont work. I plug it into the adapter, which is plugged into the outlet, and the same adapter symbol appears on the screen, and you can't do anything.

Sounds like it's time to make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your local Apple store...
