Those gates go up pretty fast! I almost feel sorry for the people who wreck their cars, but it is their fault.

The passenger in the white van wasn't wearing his seat belt. He broke the windscreen with his head.

It looked like with the minivan, the guy didn't have his seat belt on so got his head banged and had a kid in the back seat. Apparently some people don't know how to drive where these selective barriers are used.

Notice how in the one with the Black SUV thingy, the two people on the pavement / sidewalk watched in shock and then scurried away behind the car

Next they'll be putting them on the motorways. A device along the road measures your speed, and if you're above the speed limit, these bars suddenly rise from the concrete in front of your car.

That would be fun... hehe.

How do thses things work though? Is there someone operatiing them by monitoring the camera, lowering them whenever an authorised vehicle wishes to pass, and then quickly raising them even though he sees a car making a dash for it? Or are they automatic?

We have these barriers at my university so buses can take a short cut down a residential street, and people regularly do this.

One student wrote off his dads merc 4 days into term, and got his picture on the front page of the student union paper. I still have it somewhere I think - it pushed the engine block out of it mounts.

One year it happened 3 times in 10 weeks.

I would assume automatic. I would reckon that the bus drivers or other authorized folks have either a garage door opener kind of device or some sort of "cruise card" that a reader close by knows of its presence thus opening the gate for so long.

They have some sort or radio card thing I think to open the barriers from a distance, and there are lasers to sense when it has cleared the area.

The barriers open as it approaches from some distance (although they can't approach too fast)

But what if it was pulling something (i.e. a caravan), wouldn't the barriers go up as the car itself had passed, and damage the caravan?

While watching this, I got the impression that this street was for mass-transit and deliveries only, so what were these passenger car drivers thinking they were going to do? How would they get out of the street?

It's actually only for buses and emergency vehicles.

The problem seems to be that people are getting trapped in a stupid one way system, and they see a bus going through and try to tailgate it, with dire consequences.

St Mary's Gate is part of the refurbished "heart" of the city of Manchester which was destroyed by the IRA truck bomb 10 years ago. This part of the city used to be clogged 12 hours a day by traffic and by closing the street off they have eliminated that problem.

That is hillarious.

Why are the people in the black 4x4 getting away quick.

I was on Cross Street and saw the Kia 4x4 hit the bollard. Some people are really just idiots - there's massive, bright LED signs saying 'No Entry', and it's clear just how sturdy the bollards are. Anyone who tries to go through them to cut a measly 20 seconds off their journey time deserves everything they get.

As for the 4x4, it was brand new (56-plate), and the idiot tried to reverse it off the bollard (the fact the bollard had gone through the engine, notwithstanding) and essentially tore the car in half.

That makes it sound even worse, and a more stupid thing to do with a '56 plate car.
