New Cell Phone For Me: Motorola Razr?

Tue Oct 31, 2006 3:42 am

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at gettiung a new cell and the RAZR may be it. I love the looks of it and the stuff it has - but I haven't been able to talk to anyone who has one to see how they work in the real world. Does anyone here have any advice, suggestions?

Thanks, JasYHZ

I know that the RAZRs have gone through complete overhauls in the past couple of years, and they are constantly improving them. I have had the first generation of the Moto RAZR for almost 2 years now. I got one almost right after it came out. It doesn't have all the improved features and all, but it's still a relatively good phone. It has served me well for the purpose it was made for, calling and texting. I really don't give a damn about all the cameras and music, so it's not really a loss for me. The sleekness of it is a big plus because it doesn't stick out of pockets. So the reliability + style have made it the best in my book. I have talked 300+ hours on mine and it is still going strong!

HOWEVER, there are a few problems. I've had the phone crash on me quite a few times. Sometimes when I open it, it goes blank, and wants me to restart it. Battery life on my phone is not great. It barely lasts two days. Somehow dust appeared under my screen, and it makes it hard to see the screen sometimes during daylight, and there is no way of getting rid of it. But since I've had it for 2 years, I'm not really complaining.

Even though I'm not going to change my phone until this one completely dies, I will be looking for either a sleek Nokia or Sony in the future just because of the software. I find those phones more user-friendly as opposed to Moto.

On a scale of 1-10. I'd give the 1st generation RAZR a solid 8, with points off for user-friendliness and software crashes.

I got one earlier this year.

Battery life is not good.

Mobile web is slow and only select sites not full internet capabilities which no-one at Verizon pointed out, when I was evaluating it.

If you can afford to, go for a blackberry or something like that!

Go for Nokia or SonyEricsson instead.

I have the new V3 - Had it about 5 weeks and I can honestly say it is fabulous. The thing I have noticed about the phone is the quality of the camera, everyone tells me it is the best. It's all singing and dancing and I have yet to use it to it's full potential, it's easy to use and is the best mob phone I have had by far (never thought I'd stray from Nokia's !)

RAZR is totally overrated. Sure it's thin, but when you flip it open the thing is massive and it looks like you're using a mobile phone circa 1996. Also the features are nothing great, though I've been buying my phones in europe (which is about 5 years ahead of North American with phones) so I may be a bit on the negative side.

I'd go with one of the "new" Sony Ericsson or Nokia phones currently available at Rogers. They're pretty slick (compared to most other jurassic phones available here).

If by chance you plan on traveling to europe anytime in the near future. Hold off on the phone purchase and buy one in Europe. For the same price you'll get a phone that's light years ahead of anything we have here.

I was close to getting a RAZR, but I ended up purchasing a Samsung SGH-T519, or something like that, with T Mobile. It's like Samsung's answer to the SLIVR, and it's amazing! Super thin, awesome screen, loud ringers, kickass interface, and a micro SD card for expansion. I've used RAZRs before, but this thing is superior by far.

If that's not available, which I suspect it might not be, stick to Sony Ericsson or Samsung. From my experience, these always seem to be the best.

I have the Motorola Q...the smartphone of the RAZR/SLVR family. But most of the people in my office have RAZRs and swear by them. I think they look oversized and bulky as hell though...I used to be a big Nokia lover, but needed a more versatile/internet capable phone and picked up a Q for it's small size and non-cluttered interface.

But I agree with VonRichtofen, if you're going to Europe soon, pick up a cellie. They have some crazy ones over there.

I have a V3x in blue and both my mum and dad have a V3, pink and black respectively.

Great phones.

I had one and although it was stylish, it was a piece of shit. After about six months, the phone just stopped charging. I didn't drop it, it never got wet, it had no scratches, it just decided not to work. Ok, so I took it in, got a whole new one. Six months later, had the same problem happen again. It also is a very slow operating phone. I could always text faster than it could keep up, and moving about on the phone from say ringers to texting, would take longer than other phones. Furthermore, both liked to pick their own ring tones sometimes. I only had one downloaded ringtone, and that was for my girlfriend. Sometimes though when a private number called, it would play that tone. Other times it played the normal one.

My advice? It, and most other Motorola phones, are pieces of shit.

I now have a Samsung t509 and it is a great phone. Has a great camera, is thinner, operates quicker on a smoother interface, and has all the same great features. Plus, it always charges!

Save yourself the headache and stay away from Ericsson. I have the Z520A. Not a cheap phone. It's not that it's of poor quality, or bad reception. It's just very stupidly designed. It's like they had monkeys come up with the interface. For example, the side up and down buttons don't control volume like you'd think. When you press them, they give you the phone information (i.e. the model number of the phone). So to change ringer volume, you have to actually go through the menus (when there is a perfectly logical button for it--though used in an incredibly illogical way).

Also, there is button lag. What is button lag? You press a button, and the phone takes 2 seconds to respond. Hit menu, 2 seconds later, the menu pops up.

Annoying little shit this phone is!

Oh, to answer the original question, my buddy had the razr, had a lot of problems with it, and had it replaced. Still has problems with it (the new one).

I have had several Razrs. I had one in Britain year ago and I have just got rid of one in the US (Verizon) personally I think that they are the worse phones ever invented.

Again, google works wonders:

This is a public non-av forum. I'm sure he's realized that Google has reviews. But instead came here for personal opinions. Nothing wrong with that.

I used the RAZR for about a month. I used it at work one day while it was raining, that was the end of that, light rain and the screen went on me. Then I moved over to the ROKR, that was about as useful as a four hundred dollar door stop. My sister's RAZR broke after about 2 months, she dropped it with the screen flipped up, snap went the screen. I personally will never buy another Motorola cell phone. They make them look great, but I could never get one to work great.

I finally smartened up and bought a phone that's functional, as opposed to one that just looks great. I use the BlackBerry now, never had a problem with it.
