Russo-German Pipeline Controversy

Tue Oct 31, 2006 7:36 am

For those who aren't up to date: Russia and Germany reached a deal to build a natural-gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea in 2005. This caused concern in Poland and Ukraine, who feel the pipleine helps Russia gain more control over Poland and The Ukraine, as Western Europe now would be unaffected by Russia potentially cutting off gas supplies to Eastern Europe.

While Poland does make a valid point, is Germany really to blame for such a deal? As far as I am concerned, Germany is merely attempting to assure an uninterupted flow of gas even in the event of shaky relations between Russia and Germany's eastern neighbors. I do not think this is wrong of Germany, to act in her best interests.

The only legitimate argument I can think of on behalf of Poland is that since Poland is also an EU member state, Germany should not try to distance herself from Poland on such an isssue as energy.

Thoughts?

What a coincidence, Germany's ex-Chancellor Schroeder is currently talking about this in a talk-show I am watching. Big grin

I see nothing wrong with this pipeline. The only reason Poland is upset is because they won't be getting any transit fees for it.
