Flying Back To Finland... First Time In 6+ Years..

Sat Nov 04, 2006 8:19 am

Hi all,

By the end of this year, I will complete my CPL & Multi IFR license. As a present to myself I decided to take a little trip back to Europe; more specifically Finland. I called my buddy in Turku and we plan to have 10 days of pure craziness. Drinking Koskenkorva, partying & most importantly chasing Finnish ladies.

I would also like to take Viking Line, from Turku to Stockholm. I've been on it before and had a blast.

Anyway, now I'm faced with purchasing a ticket and I don't know which is the best way. By the way, I'm in Calgary, Canada.

Option #1:

Outbound:
Air Canada [ YYC - FRA ] A333
Lufthansa [ FRA - HEL ] A320

Return:
Scandinavian Airlines [ ARN - LHR ] M80
Air Canada [ LHR - YYC ] A333

----------------------------------------------
Total Price: $1177.95 (Canadian dollars, from Air Canada's website)

Option #2

Outbound:
Air Canada [ YYC - FRA ] A333
Lufthansa [ FRA - HEL ] A320

Return:
Lufthansa [ HEL - FRA ] A320
Air Canada [ FRA - YYC ] A333

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Total Price: $1191.74 (Canadian dollars, from Air Canada's website)

You can see that there's not a lot of difference in price. Now a few questions:

What's the best way to get from Helsinki Vantaa to Turku? (price / time / convenience )

What airlines offer flights between Turku and Stockholm? (should I choose not to go by boat to Sweden)

How good is the transportation system in Stockholm? What's the best way to get from the centre of Stockholm to Arlanda?

Thanks guys... any other suggestions for cheaper flights, I'd love to hear it.

Vio

Have you considered YYC-JFK on AC and JFK-HEL on AY?

Or does AY still operate to YYZ (I know they have/do with a 757)?

They have codeshare with BA on this route, I would seriously consider taking BA YYC-LHR and LHR-HEL.

Take #61 bus to Tikkurila. timetable . In Tikkurila take the 50 m walk and any Helsinki-bound train. From Helsinki you take a train to Turku. VR's on-line shop is here . (Print/note the reference number and show it to the Guard.) If you take a train with the destination 'Turku satama' you'll end right on the quay.

An addition: a rather nice journey planner on which I made a template for you.

Thank you so much WSOY. That's very kind of you. Also I want to thank everyone who gave me ideas. As it turns out, I tried a travel agency today and they offered a fare I couldn't resist.

Calgary - Seattle (Alaska Airlines) 737NG
Seattle - Copenhagen (SAS) A340
Copenhagen - Helsinki (SAS) MD-80

------------------------- and return:

Helsinki - Copenhagen (Blue1) AR8
Copenhagen - Seattle (SAS) A340
Seattle - Calgary (Horizon Air) CRJ

total price (including taxes) : 1026 Canadian (715 Euros, 910 US Dollars)

I think VR train is the best way to get to Turku. I don't mind the trains in Europe and as much as I'd love to fly Finnair ATRs, I would rather take a train and see a bit of Finland.

My mom's side of the family is Finnish...I spent two weeks traveling around Finland in August 2005 and had an amazing time, I'm hoping to make it back there next summer after I finish up my bachelor's degree. Have fun!

Thanks, and enjoy your stay. If you booked already, mind your blood pressure and steer clear of www.orbitz.com
