Anyone affected by this. Seems it was a cascade failure, kinda like the US one but not as bad. Power restored quiet fast

Rumor has it that it happened because JGPH1A was using his microwave, toaster, oven, grill, George Foreman, Toastie Maker AND juicer at the same time whilst he was trying to make a midnight snack...

Cascade failures occur to save the system from overloads. That is what triggered the August 2003 great blackout which affected Ohio, and most of the Northeastern USA. The problem started in Ohio when some circuits overloaded, triggering circuit breakers, cutoffs in power transmissions to prevent surges diverted from cut lines. Took 2-3 days to get power back in NY City.

Yeah winter has it's tolls. A lot of consumption and increase in demand for electricity will most definitely lead to something like this. Glad it didn't escalate any further!

Hope no one here was directly affected by the outages.

Appears it was a German power company turning off a line to let a cruise ship
go down a river. This then caused a cascade fail-er

We felt it even here in Zagreb, Croatia. There was a brief blackout, no more than 2 seconds, before the local grid started compensating. Power to most households was restored immediately, while public lighting took a few more minutes to fire up.
No plane, no gain.

My humble abode was plunged into darkness on Saturday around 10pm for about 45 minutes. Some 5 millions French homes were affected. I see it also affected countries such as Spain, Italy and Croating to mention a few that jump to mind. Apparently caused by increased demand of electricity in Germany due to drop in temperatures which lead to some systems overheating. France provides Germany with some of its electrical power, and "apparently" according to todays local Toulouse paper (as many areas around Toulouse were affected), the French cut the power here in France as a preventative measure to prevent something worse...

Anyway, longest power-cut I've had in years. At least it gave me a good oppotyunity to get the candles out and cuddle with my wife.

It did though make me realise just how reliant we are on electricity, I was just booking our Christmas holiday flights when the power went, at least my lap-top has a battery so no problem, but oh no, my broadband internet is electric so no internet (luckily got the same good fares as I had found before), then went to phone the electricity company, and damn, all the house phones are electrically supplied now, all our central heating is electic but in only 45 minutes didn't really affect us, and of course our hot water, is supplied by electricity... basically without electricity there ain't much one can do anymore...
Long live Aer Lingus!

And they'll soon be switching that line off again, btw the ship's going to Norwegian Cruise Lines. I wish it a bright future.  Wink

Luckily this time it didn't hit Sweden. Just imagine what chaos it would have created all over this planet if Johan's a.net web server had gone dead.

there was absolutely no power-outage in Switzerland. The supply-companies have informed that they had no problem whatever.

Please let me know if/where you find similar pages as this one for your country: an on-line overview on the supply & demand situation at a glance.

Note: since the Russian Grid is not synchronized to the Nordic grid (both have a nominally 50 Hz cycle AC power), the power has to undergo an AC-DC-AC conversion. This facility is located on the Russian side of the border.
