Norwegian Royal Family Refuses To Fly First Class

Mon Nov 06, 2006 7:15 am

http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=136512 (in norwegian only)

The Norwegian Royal Couple, Prince Hakon and Princess Mette-Marit, refuses to fly first class on international long-haul trips. Instead they choose to fly business class since this will only cost half of what first class tickets cost. Having recently flown to New Delhi and back with Lufthansa, the couple stated that since they are very preoccupied with combating poverty, and since they were travelling to a country plagued with this problem, flying first class "just wouldn't seem right."

What do you all think about this? Is this just something used for good PR? After all, poverty does not disappear regardless of which class they fly in. At the same time, they clearly show that they realize their own privileged positions and that while they are enjoying a life in luxury, millions of people are struggling to survive.

Good for them! Nothing to do with poverty, but it is the taxpayer who pays for their flights. I'm not sure about Norwegian politics/royalty, but I would assume that you have a King/Queen... I guess it would be suitable for them to fly First Class but Prince's/Princesses need only travel Business.

Yep - couldn't agree more. Very noble but not really doing much for 3rd would debt is it? Godd for them though, slumming it in J when they could be in F

If they were really concerned, they would fly Y with the commoners.

I know huh, I mean i can't afford to fly business with my own money. I mean J is not exactly the pits.. Big grin

But seriously it is a good gesture. Everything counts..

To me, it's an empty gesture. If they took the money saved and donated it, then it's a different story.

Flying business instead of first didn't do a thing for combating poverty. It just made them feel warm and fuzzy.

I think that would have been even more dramatic and self-aggrandizing than anything. Futhermore the point of J class in just what the name implies. The cabin for folks who plan on be in a suitable condition to do business when they land. Sure they could have made a showy display requesting a middle seat, in the back, by the lav. But they would have needed two days of rest at a hotel to be presentable for the media intensive work they come to do.

They made a balanced choice. It would have be good P.R. if LH had seated them in F, but oh well.

I think it's classy. A gesture? Certainly. Empty? I think not.

Norwegians should be happy to have considerate Royalty.  bigthumbsup

Now lets try to persuade mid to high level government officials to fly business or Y class instead of first class. Check out the first class cabin of International flights into and out of Nigeria. They are filled mostly by government officials. Many times, the cost of a single first class ticket is greater than their annual salaries as civil servants.  scratchchin

Nice.. I wonder how their king flies. When Queen Beatrix flies KL, a whole section of J is reserved for her and her suite, with a special royal seat (throne Big grin) installed for her. Same goes for QE2 when she flies BA. And when our prince and his wife fly around, they still get to use the royal F70, as they did this week in New Zealand. I assume they fly normal KL WBC to get to the closest point to destination (must have been CGK I guess).

It sounds like Norwegians are more humble.

In line with this, we had this nice post about the Norwegian king earlier this year:

Quoting KaiGywer:
I remember flying ALF-FBU on an SK MD80 once. We were in one of the last rows, so we boarded early. Doors close, and as they start their announcement, they go "Your majesty, ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard SK" A lot of heads looking up front then. The king of norway was on his way back to Oslo after doing something (can't remember what) up north. When we landed in FBU, we stopped short of the terminal, the king and his crew got out, and then we taxied to the terminal. The entire Royal Family in norway flies commercial when they travel. Back in the 70s, I remember the king even riding the tram and wanting to pay like a normal passenger when he was going skiing. This was during the oil crisis, and he didn't want to seem "better" than the average citizen. His bodyguard had already paid however. There is a really famous photo of this

I also think it is a good gesture, but I think the royal family in this case is equally concerned about not overusing the money coming in from taxpayers as they are in "combating poverty". I remeber that the Swedish foreign minister received lots of negative criticism after flying first class to Thailand shortly after the tsunami disaster. I have a feeling the Norwegian royal family wants to avoid that.

Exactly what I was thinking

And because they're the royal family, what are the odds they'll be upgraded to First anyways? Probably pretty high.

May be a nice gesture, but not really a selfless one like they seem to be trying to show.

Actually, when the Crown Prince and Princess got married they requested all official gifts and public gifts to be donated into a fund they had set up in their name, namely to help promote and combat HIV and AIDS.

As for the money they "saved" - the tickets are paid for by the Ministy of Foreign Affairs so the actual saving does indeed not go towards 'fighting poverty' but the gesture is meant to show that, as people, they do not need to fly F simply because they can when other people have so much less.

It would be nice to see more people of their responsibility do similar things.

When the King last visited my home airport, the plan was to use a privat jet, but he turned up on the scheduled Golden Air Saab-340 flight from Oslo with the other passengers. No special treatment there. (Except he has a private FA and got to sit up front in the cabin...)

Sort of, Business class isn't "slumming it" If they REALLY wanted to impress me they'd get in the back. That being said, it is a step in the RIGHT direction. If I were the airline though I'd charge them economy, and 'accidently' not have any seats but F/C avail.

The same still applies though, the Royal Family is very down to earth. Crown Prince Haakon was a normal student at Berkeley a few years back, he goes to the Quart festival every year (or at least used to), and on our constitution day (May 17th), they come out to meet the people.

Only time I've seen the King splurge, was in 91 when him and the queen traveled around the entire country after the previous king had died. They arrived in a helicopter to the little Saami village of Maze. Came to see my grandparents as a matter of fact Big grin

it is a kind of demonstration, and a positive gesture. Those in charge with F-class sales will not be amused !

Members of the Royal Family frequently fly on BA commercial flights to and from engagements and have been doing so for some time now. It happens less for HM The Queen simply due to the security involved.
