Haha, well out of the 6 threads I saw that were started about this, this one had the first reply, so...

Hopefully it's true. Whoever replaces him will have a hell of a job to do.

Looks like the GOP is finally waking up and smelling the coffee.

As a fiscal conservative/social libertarian I was really sad to not be able to support the GOP in yesterdays election, but they had lost track and needed to refocus, hopefully we can begin to recover and have a moderate conservative government for the next election.

I dont think anything could have saved our party, we need more McCain's out there, more libertarians and we need to get rid of the born again religionazis.

Rumsfeld probably felt that he was going to wait and see the outcome of the election before stepping down, I think he finally realized he was loosing his grip.

Who will replace him?

I hope its a former general, Powell? Clark?

Indeed. The timing is a bit funny. Trying to get his replacement confirmed before the Democrats take over, perhaps? But I think we can all agree that it couldn't come soon enough.

The GOP may be smelling the coffee, but the steam pressure that is building on the newly elected Democrats is building. They had better come up with some ideas and FAST, because the President is putting them on record that he IS NOW WILLING TO COMPROMISE AND WORK THRU DIFFERENCES!

Let the chips fall where they may. The ball is now in the DEMOCRATS court to either PUT UP or SHUT UP.

I'll give them two years to come up with a "better direction".

I will hold my breath. With an oxygen bottle at the ready!

Congratulations to those Democrats who got what they wanted.

The Republicans MIGHT be able to regain some respect if the have one of their bigshots resign every week until November 2008.

Next week...Cheney.  Wink

I'm not saying it would have affected, but the party I have supported in the past has been taken over by a band of born again lunatics that are betraying conservative values and spending our money in another country that doesn't even want our help. Rummie leaving COULD mean that the GOP is finally waking up and people like McCain and more moderates are going to prevail.

I supported Democrats but I dont believe in liberals, I just wanted a change in direction.

Again nothing, that for me sums up what republicans should be about, and they are clearly not following those principles, in stead of trying to decide who you go to bed with at night they should focus on cutting government spending and building up the US economy.

In conclusion QUESO, what I am saying is that I feel that rummie leaving is the beginning of the end of Ultra Born again conservatism in the GOP and we will begin to see a throwback to more Goldwater type republicanism.

I turned on BBC when I got home and there he was, the Ebil One himself, confirming Donald Rumsfeld's "resignation" (for which read "...and the horse you rode in on !"). I just had to log on to see if ANCFlyer was doing the Myposian Squirrel-Dance of Joy  Smile

He's actually being quite good-humoured about the election result - calling it "cumulatively speaking, a thumping". Er, yeah. Maybe he'll get the message now, and try to be a little more accomodating to average people's concerns.

Oh wow. After the question where the reporter quoted Pelosi as saying the President was "incompetent" among other unflattering things, he started rambling on and on. I can just see Tony Snow sitting backstage right now with his head in his hands. He's probably muttering quietly, "Just shut the f--k up!"

CBS and ABC seem to be running a it with a very long delay. I don't know why they'd do that, unless they're afraid Bush is so pissed off that he'll let loose with a few F-bombs.

Rumsfeld was the architect of a War that went sour for lack of planning. That precipitated the fall of this administration's supporters at the polls. As well as increased the Federal deficit at a rate of $400B a year. See the responsibility?

The vitriol against the President here is difficult to fathom.

Because of the extremism of leftists, the Democrats lost against Sen. Lieberman in Connecticut. Leftists like those who hate the President should take note that when they're in a hole, they should stop digging.

America has given the Democratic Party a chance. As usual, the Democrats will prove no better than the Republicans, and perhaps worse. And extreme leftists will continue to froth at the mouth, doing little but showing their pure hatred of those with whom they politically disagree.

Such is the state of the left today.

The announcement by Bush follows a major victory by the Democratic party in US midterm elections on Tuesday, fuelled in part by voter anger over the war in Iraq of which Rumsfeld was a chief architect

I disagree. Many people most likely voted based on a negative opinion of the situation in Iraq. Had Rummy left last week the GOP could have spun it to their advantage, and maybe made people feel good about the change of power. I guarantee the presidents approval rating will rise now that Rummy is gone.

Bush was VERY in charge in this news conference. If you fail to see that....well you just are quite the biased one.

The vitriol against the President here is difficult to fathom.

No it's not. When you think of the source, malcontents and foreigners, it does not surprise me one bit. Especially the foreigners.

After five-plus years of Karl Rove as the grand master of ethics in the Bush camp? After five-plus years of an imperial and outright hostile foreign policy which can only be described as catastrophic?

It's strange that people keep on reciting the Mantra of Karl Rove (soon to be a Dixie Chicks albums?), and yet fail to notice that it's people like Sen. Reid who accused a prominent Republican who happened to hold a very prominent office, viz., that of the President of the United States, of being a "loser", or some such thing.

Oh, and don't forget Sen. Kerry's recent little "joke".
