Yankees Trade Sheffield

Gary Sheffield goes to the Tigers (who would have thought?) in return for three pitching prospects. It's not clear who's paying how much of his contract, though the Yankees did just pick up their $13 million option on him.

I did enjoy having Sheffield on the Yankees, but there were too many outfielders (and there still are with Damon, Matsui, Abreu and Cabrera), and the move had to be made.

Probably for the best. Sheffield will be more injury-prone as he ages, and traces of the "Old Sheff" were manifesting themselves in his attitude-laced media tirades.

On the Tigers, he can have a major impact and possibly help the team contend again.

So you go to Boston for the weekend, and you're posting on A.net? tongue

Personally, I think this is a terrible move for the Tigers, why bring Sheffield's negative influence into the clubhouse and then give a 38 yr old outfielder an extra two years on his contract. I suppose that he will end up being the DH, can't see him replacing one the Tiger's outfielders.

The Tigers gave him a new contract.

Now resigning Biaggo for the Astros was a very good move. Will be the first Astro to acheive 3,000 hits, I think so but an Astro fan can confirm.

First off, no a, it's Biggio. Second, yes, he will be the first ever 3000 hit Astro. Bagwell's 449 HR is also a Franchise record.

This might actually work for the Tigers. They gave up three young pitchers, but not a proven starter in someone like Bonderman. Sheffield loved playing for Leyland in Florida. He will DH in Detroit. A proven bat in the middle of the line-up could very much help the Tigers win another pennant in 2007.
Maggs swings, it's a drive deep to left! The Tigers are going to the World Series!!!

Cabrera did well last season, however as he still develops, he is best off as a 4th outfielder right now.

Sheff if he typical Jekyll and Hyde player. He can be happy or angry based on which way the wind is blowing. In Detroit, he gets yet another fresh start and that always seems to cheer him up. Detroit isn't going to give up 3 pitching propects for a 1 year player, so they will give him a new contract. Another reason for Sheff to be happy. I expect a big season out of the slugger next year, and this is a good move by Detroit in my opinion.

I agree that he's still developing, but I do think that he needs to develop, not just be a bench player. I hope he gets the playing time he needs, but with everyone else out there I'm not sure how it'll happen.

I agree that he has a lot of potential, however with their current roster, I wouldn't take him over any of hte other 3. He gives the Yankees though, a great option as a DH if needed, pinch hitter and backup outfielder to give the big 3 days off. Plus Damon is usually good for a stint or two on teh DL so he will get some time...I think.
