Who Said No Nat. Champ. For The Irish?

Sun Nov 12, 2006 5:55 pm

hey guys,

it's a safe assumption after today that anything can happen these upcoming weeks in regards to the BCS standings. also, its a possibility that the Irish can make a run for the national championship. we need a Michigan win (Saturday vs. OSU of course), along with a sound victory over the Trojans. we're not out of it quite yet..

...just a random thread, any death threats or comments are welcome

No, but you sure need a hell of a lot of help to even sniff the jockstrap of the national championship game. Obviously there will be a loser in the OSU-UM game but you also must beat USC above you plus pray for my Gators to lose a game (not a hard feat given our sputtering offense) and then you still have to consider Arkansas if they were to beat us for the SEC Championship. The SEC winner if they have one loss will play for the national title given the current situation.

No death threat but Brady Quinn sure needs to cut his hair. He looks like a girl. And an ugly one at that. His sister got all the looks in the family.

well, my logic was ND definitely needs a Michigan win Saturday. with a UM win, the Irish will have one loss, and it would be to the number one team in the country. also, I have a feeling Arkansas will knock off Florida for the SEC, and I believe we'll beat USC. with all this considered, the potential BCS standings could look like this come season's end:
-Michigan
-Notre Dame
-Arkansas

I think you're right, but I hope not. If OSU did lose, I suppose it would depend on the margin of defeat. New rankings were just unveiled, the Irish are 5!!

You guys bring it upon yourself. If your Subway Alumni would quit being so damn smug for a team that hasn't done much of anything since 1988 you might not be so hated. Just a thought to rehabilitate the image...though I'm sure it will be met on deaf ears.

Add me to that list

Quoting TedTAce (Reply 2):

Agreed. Jeff Samardja or however his name is spelled is the real deal. Brady Quinn is not. He has looked mediocre at best in games against teams that are even halfway decent. He has had real problems reading defenses. C'mon, having to come back to beat Michigan State and UCLA?!? ND's defense has cracks large enough to allow someone like me to run through!

On the other hand, who else has a chance? Outside of Ohio State and Michigan there are no real powerhouse teams this year; every other team has shown gaping holes in either offense or defense. I don't see ND beating USC, though. ND is overhyped, plain and simple. The PAC-10 is so even in terms of talent that we have Washington State beating USC who beat Oregon who beat Arizona who beat Cal who beat Washington State. Or something like that, don't remember it all off the top of my head. But even though Zona beat Cal, Cal could still come back and beat USC who are still more talented than UND.

What do we have then? OSU or Michigan will be #1 and likely still #2 if the game is close. Florida has not played like a #3 team. They don't score points and their defense is mediocre. Next down the list is Rutgers, who play Cincy, Syracuse, and West Virginia. If Rutgers run the table, then maybe, but they have to get past WVU, which may not happen. Then it would be down to Arkansas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

What matters is that it doesn't really matter if a team other than Michigan or OSU plays for the National Championship. They are simply better than all other teams in college football right now. Whoever goes up against either one of those teams for the championship will lose. Although I have to admit, I wouldn't mind seeing Notre Dame have their asses handed to them by Michigan again  Wink

Actually would not be surprised if the people at NCAA HQ are hoping for Rutgers to play either Mich or OSU. RU gives college football really great, really close access to the largest media market in the US.

Oh, the other thing that must be mentioned...the BCS computers rank Michigan 1, Rutgers 2, and OSU 3.

Because it is a statement without any reasoning (Don't tell me the resoning is that UM has all ready beat ND, that was the past). I am not saying that ND would win if they had a rematch, I am just saying that you or Texan does not know that they would lose, or get "there asses handed to them", as you guys keep saying.

I'm thinking (and hoping) that if Rutgers wins out, they'll be in one of the lower tier BCS games. Imagine that, guys, Rutgers and Boise State in the BCS  yuck  ...

Oh, great. Another Notre Shame fan. I had to sit next to a huge fat one at the 2001 Fiesta Bowl, and listen to him for 2 quarters. Then the second half started. He left midway through the 3rd. Couldn't take all the Oregon State fans letting him hear exactly how soundly OSU was stomping his beloved Irish.

I don't know what I enjoy more. Watching the University of Oregon lose, or watching Notre Dame lose.

Dont get me wrong...i have no rooting interest for the Irish, but ive never quite understood what it is that everyone hates about them so much. Fans of OSU, UT (both texas and tenn...god knows how many alums/diehard fans of both that ive met that seem to think their school is the mecca of the universe...), pretty much any sec team, mich, miami, etc. are all generally just as ridiculous. Is it the fact that ND has been such a darling of the media? Or the fact that it is actually in the top 20 academically?

I think that is the main reason why. Look at ND's record the last 10 years and see that it has been mediocre at best but yet they still have the NBC contract and the media sucks up to them as if they were coached by God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost themselves. Or that they lose a couple of games (more than that in recent years) and have the audacity to bitch that they are not in a New Year's Day bowl game and how that is a travesty to the game and their fans. It's just the arrogance and trashy Subway Alumni that makes them easy to hate.

ND comes from behind to win a game in the last seconds against a team they should have blown out and the news is all about how their shit don't stink. I fully expect the next story to be about how the South will rise again and my wife is still 29 anytime I hear a sportscaster spouting off about ND.

That doesn't bug me at all. In fact I love it because it shows the liberal, peacenik, jackasses that say football is filled with dummies who wouldn't be in college without their football skills they are wrong.

What do you expect when their "blowout" wins are against the Service Acadamies. I mean nothing like being a National Powerhouse and throwing 3 games against Army, Navy, and the Air Force in the mix. What, you couldn't get the Coast Guard's Field Hockey team on the schedule as well?

I know all top schools play cupcakes, but all you ever hear about is how tough the Notre Dame schedule is. Yeah, sure.

Everyone has to admit that the Irish's schedule this year isn't that difficult. At the outset it looked difficult, but in reality it turned out to be a relatively easy one compared to other years.

ND has has had two tough games against top 25 caliber opponents (GTech, Michigan) and two tough games against teams that ND should have rolled (Mich St. and UCLA).

Scheduling three service academies is not a cakewalk schedule. Air Force and Navy both have been fairly good in recent years. Army was scheduled so ND could have a seventh home game and get more revenue after the NCAA authorized 7 home games for the Irish. As late as mid-season last year, Army was not on the schedule for 2006.

You have to admit that scheduling Michigan and USC every year in addition to teams like Purdue and Michigan St. indicates ND doesn't schedule a cakewalk. Unfortunately, some years the schedule just ends up easier than others due to our opponents having collective down years.

So, people can stop whining about our 3 service academies on the schedule.

The Service Acadamies play respectable football, but they are hardly real competition for th top level schools like Notre Dame. The players on the Acadamises just don't have the size or skill to compete. These players are "recruited" to be the future leaders of our military, not to play football. They play football as a secondary activity. They can't have 300 plus pound linemen, becuase their standards do not allow such a thing. When the Acadamies play the bigger schools, their heart is what gets them through on a respectable level (hopefully), and on a rare occasion they can score an upset. I still wouold not classify them as good competition for Notre Dame. And yeah, its respectable to play Michigan and USC yearly, but to mention the Purdue's and Mich. States is taking it too far. They are schools that are rarely in it and at best can hope to play spoiler.

How about the fact that ND schedules approximately 4 or 5 years in advance, and when they made the schedule UCLA was a very respectable program (better than USC at the time), and Georgia Tech has historically been very good. Penn State was hit or miss, but they have been a football powerhouse as late as 1998 (and last year).

It is not ND's fault that the teams that they think are going to be good competition turn to patsies between the time we schedule them and the time we play them.

I think that is the main reason why

Because they signed a contract with NBC. ANY team would sign that contract.

But we're still ahad of you so enjoy the view from below and then further down as USC beats you

Next weekend is UM vs OSU; then there will be ND vs USC, then YOU will most likey play Arkansas. Believe me, you will NOT be ranked as you are now at the end of the season. Lots of football left.

Quoting DeltaOwnsAll (Reply 33):
but did you see their game last wk

Yeah, when they should have lost to Southern Carolina????

Quoting KROC (Reply 35):
I mean nothing like being a National Powerhouse

You just explained USC [ and Notre Dame, Florida, Arkansas, and every other team]. I think we all agree that UM and OSU are the only powerhouses left.

Quoting Arch89U (Reply 36):
Everyone has to admit that the Irish's schedule this year isn't that difficult. At the outset it looked difficult, but in reality it turned out to be a relatively easy one compared to other years.

I could not agree with you more.

In context of this year, UM and OSU are the only ones. Period.

Really? 1 loss Florida and 1 loss USC don't count? 2 loss teams that are perennial winners all of a sudden don't count? Please.

what exactly does 'should have' mean, lol. They won completely on their own merit, theres no 'should have lost'. And god knows i meant the fsu game...now there is a team in shambles...anyone that predicts fsu to beat fl is just trying to get incredibly lucky so that they can look like some kind of soothsayer.

I would usually agree, but what are the chances that a team miss two game winning kicks, one being an extra point.

they don't. Florida is certainly overrated, and please do not listen to lee corso on ESPN claiming that USC is a great football team...they're not anymore, they both are overrated.

everyone keeps forgetting that at one time, Oregon State was blowing out USC. I know the final score was no indicator, but at one time it was pitiful. please stop saying ND was blown out and not taking in consideration USC is in the same ballpark, with one more close game than ND.

If the ball does not go through those yellow metal things that some people call uprights, it is a missed kick. Weather it is wide left, blocked, short, or if a meteor shower starts and knocks the ball off its course. If it goes through, the kick is made, if not, it is missed.

Still, What are the chances that a team Blocks two game winning kicks in a row. Florida should have lost that game just like ND should have lost to UCLA. Don't get all hurt about it.

If it was ND in Florida's positon, believe me, they would not have moved up to #3. Ya know why, ND is HATED for no reason, and don't give me crap about media hungry ND. Shove that up you know where
