When You're Stressed, What Is Your Escape?

Tue Nov 14, 2006 9:08 pm

The title sums it up. Do you call a best friend and vent to him or her? Vent to your spouse? Take a long drive somewhere? Have some mind blowing, toe curling sex? Head to the shooting range and pop off a couple hundred rounds? Read a good book?

A long motorcycle ride up the coast does the trick for me. I have my 'jam bag' ready to go at all times. It contains a change of clothes, a tooth brush, a credit card, and $500 in cash and I can (and have) take off at a moment's notice, sometimes with no destination in mind (yeah, it helps that I am single).

So, when life throws you a curve ball and you just have to take a break, what do you do?

Used to seek solace with a few beers.
Now I either take my camera to the airport or search for a cheap flight/hotel deal and get myself away for a couple of days

That ususally does it for me, either fly off somewhere, or take off in the car for a few days somewhere.

Ah, a very good question.

I think in my time I have tried several of the methods listed above to de-stress. Sex is always a good option but of course it's not always on tap, and I have many times in the past reverted to the old whiskey and beer, however I find that the related stress linked hangover can be intolerable. I gave up smoking weed several years ago.

Nowadays, I will certainly get a small amount of alcohol in, a pack of smokes and read one of my favourite books, generally my Sherlock Holmes colllection. I am a big fan, and even though I have read them all several times I never tire of them. It is very easy for me to forget my worries whilst reading such books.

 laughing  that silly BAB

I agree with you IJM.

I love to drive too. It's so amazing.  bigthumbsup  Well, that is if you're not stuck in traffic. To drive on a road with fast corners, entering the apex and trying to find the best line. Also I've only done it a few times, but there's an indoor Go Kart track around where I live which is fun as well. They aren't really fast, i think they go 40 mph, but the track they have set up is pretty fun.

Other than that I'd have to say music, trying to make it, or listen to it. Try to be inspired by a song. Talk to a friend or two. Writing. A poem, story, memos on my phone, texting, whatever. Reading the Bible. I just bought my first one last month so I'm new to it. I'm just trying to learn from it. Art. Drawings, digital art on the computer, photography, whatever. Watching Formula 1 videos. Watching aviation videos. Looking at pictures. Thinking about family. Trying to work out. Daydreaming. Watching Clouds. Watching Stars. Dreaming of big things. Thinking. Studying life. Reflecting. Being thankful. Be Dave.

I use music as my escape for when I just feel really down and depressed, although most would find my kind of music incredibly depressing I actually find that it helps cheer me up.

Aside from that, if I'm at home I'll go out for a walk, its especially nice during the early hours of the morning, if there is a good moon, I'll wonder through the dark river valleys and up onto the slopes of Dartmoor. Its so peaceful and you are completely alone, such a great place to sit and think without being disturbed by anyone. If I'm away from home at University, then I'll either go home, or will just book a flight somewhere, anywhere and take a couple of days away from it all, I normally end up either in Barcelona or Menorca.

I, too, grab the camera and head for the airport. Its relaxing. That is, unless I'm trying to get a specific arrival and they play musical runways.  irked

Popping a few rounds through the ol' hip iron would likely make me feel better, but a decent range is awfully far and the neighbors don't appreciate lead raindrops.

If it's late at night or in the evening, I grab my dance bag and go down to a really little local beach on Ocean Beach and dance on the sand. If it's during the day, then I grab my backpack, a book, or something and go down to Seaport Village and boardwalk to chill and do homewrok and be alone on the rocks...fun stuff  Smile

I listern to my music, full blast, as loud as possible (headphones on) mainley Pink Floyd as it completely takes me out, and makes me forget what I was stressed out about in the first place, whatever it was, will soon go.

Sometimes I also go swimming and batter the hell out of the water, but thats where my biggest problem lies so I tend to leave that one!!

I usually listen to music, take long walks, reflect on my life so far, where I intend to go, think about my dreams......

Heading out to Destin, the beach after midnight is wonderful, especially when it is very cold with an incredible wind, a full moon, and some girl to cuddle with.

Cheers,
Kyle

I am lucky enough to have a job where I can demolish good pieces of furniture as well as other things with a crow bar. It is an amazingly good way to get rid of agression. Try it next time before you trash something.

Other than that I usually just like being alone with my music or flying. Both very relaxing for me.

Ideally I can fly, that never fails but unfortunately it also costs a lot. Back home I would just surf, spend a few hours out on the water to get away from it all, but now that Im back in college I just relax and listen to some music or do push ups/sit ups till I cant do any more.
Life is better when you surf.
